This Massachusetts man became a millionaire twice in one night – thanks to a lucky lottery mistake
One lucky Massachusetts man bought two winning lottery tickets at two different stores, earning him a $2 million payday. Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, a small city in north-central Massachusetts, planned to play in the July 9 Powerball drawing. He had initially purchased a multi-draw ticket covering seven games but mistakenly believed the final drawing on that ticket had passed, according to a news release from Powerball. So, less than 10 minutes away from the first store where he bought a ticket, he picked up a second ticket for seven Powerball drawings — one that also included the July 9 drawing. That simple mistake earned him a second chance at the $217 million jackpot, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery. Both winning Powerball tickets matched all five white balls drawn on July 9 – 5, 9, 25, 28 and 69, earning Corcoran $1 million, pre-tax, per winning ticket, according to Powerball. Corcoran's numbers just missed the red Powerball, lucky number 5, falling one number short of the full jackpot. He said he's been playing those same random numbers 'for quite some time' when he claimed his winnings at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters, a state lottery spokesperson told CNN. Both stores where Corcoran bought the tickets – a Market Basket supermarket in Fitchburg and a Country Farms convenience store in Leominster – will receive a payout of $10,000, the lottery spokesperson said. The winning tickets were the first Powerball tickets worth $1 million sold in Fitchburg and Leominster, Massachusetts, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery. Corcoran told lottery officials his double win feels good, but he does not yet have plans for what he will do with his winnings. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The next Powerball drawing is July 21 with an estimated jackpot of $308 million.

Powerball Winner's Mistake Pays Off Big Time
A Massachusetts man accidentally purchased more Powerball tickets than he intended, but that mistake ended up paying huge dividends. According to a press release from Powerball, Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, won $2 million in the July 9 Powerball drawing. He did so with a pair of tickets, both of which were worth $1 million after he matched five numbers. Corcoran did not intend to purchase both tickets, though. "According to the Massachusetts Lottery, Corcoran initially bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings and mistakenly thought the final drawing on that ticket had already occurred, leading him to purchase another multi-draw ticket that also included the July 9 drawing," the press release explained. Corcoran, who was one of many million-dollar winners from the July 9 drawing, said he doesn't have any plans for his winnings, which he promptly claimed on July 11. A total of eight Match 5 winners were sold for the drawing, and another one in Texas was worth $2 million thanks to the winner matching five numbers and having the Power Play (2x). Ahead of the next drawing on Wednesday, the Powerball jackpot is at an estimated $264 million. Your chances of winning the top prize are astronomical at 1 in 292.2 million, while the chances of winning the prize Corcoran won is 1 in 11.68 million. The most recent Powerball jackpot win came on May 31. Man lucks into double $1 million Powerball win... by accident
A Massachusetts man scored big after buying not one, but two, winning Powerball tickets. Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, about 50 miles northwest of Boston, accidentally bought two tickets for the Powerball draw on July 9. As a result, he won two $1 million prizes on the same night, according to a Powerball news release. He claimed his winnings on July 11. Corcoran told Powerball he's feeling good but doesn't have any plans for the cash yet. Corcoran said he initially bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings earlier this year, and mistakenly believed the final drawing on the ticket had already happened. As a result, he bought another multi-drawing ticket for July 9. What Corcoran didn't realize is that the original ticket was also included in the July 9 drawing. That night, both of Corcoran's tickets matched all five white balls — 5, 9, 25, 28, 69 — and the red Powerball. The next Powerball drawing is set for this Saturday, when another lucky person could win the $288 million jackpot, which has a cash value of $128.8 million. There was no reported jackpot winner for the last draw on July 16. Powerball tickets are offered in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The lottery takes place three times a week, and the tickets are $2. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are one in 292.2 million. Corcoran wasn't the only one winning big this month. . He almost didn't get the cash, though, after losing the ticket behind a bed in his home. 'We lost the ticket at home. It went behind a headboard, and we didn't think too much of it… we didn't really check the numbers,' Ruff told Powerball. The ticket wasn't discovered until Ruff's cat got stuck behind the bed, prompting him and his sons to move it. They found both the cat and the lucky ticket. Ruff scanned the ticket after they found it and discovered he had struck gold. 'It was a miracle,' he said.

Massachusetts man mistakenly buys extra Powerball ticket, wins $2 million
A Massachusetts man won $2 million playing the Powerball thanks to a very lucky mistake. Paul Corcoran, a Fitchburg resident, bought two separate Powerball tickets for the July 9 drawing that each won $1 million before taxes. The first was bought at a Fitchburg Market Basket, and the second came from Country Farms on North Main Street in Leominster. The Massachusetts State Lottery explained that Corcoran purchased the second Powerball ticket without realizing that the "multi-draw" ticket he had bought earlier already covered him for last Wednesday's drawing. "Corcoran noted that he initially bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings and mistakenly thought the final drawing on that ticket had already occurred, leading him to purchase another multi-draw ticket that also included the July 9 drawing," the Lottery said in a statement. Corcoran's tickets both matched every winning number, except for the Powerball. The winning numbers for the July 9 drawing were 5-9-25-28-69 with a Powerball number of 5. Corcoran, who claimed his prizes at Lottery headquarters on Friday, told the Lottery that the wins "feel good," but he hasn't decided how to spend the money yet. The stores that sold the winning tickets will each get a $10,000 bonus. No one has won the Powerball jackpot recently, which is up to $264 million for the July 16 drawing. Powerball tickets are $2 per play, and drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night. The chances of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
