Over 99% new telecom subscribers join Reliance Jio, Airtel network in May
The total number of telecom subscribers in India grew marginally to 1,207 million in May, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel adding over 99 per cent of new customers during the month, according to data published by sector regulator Trai on Friday. The total net subscriber addition by telecom service providers was 4.36 million, while Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel jointly added 4.35 million, thereby accounting for 99.84% of the total net subscriber addition in May. The overall growth in subscriber base was offset by losses incurred by debt-ridden Vodafone Idea (Vi) and public sector firms BSNL and MTNL. India's total telecom subscriber base grew to 1,207 million, with landline connections rising by 3.34% to 38.6 million and mobile connections increasing to 1,168.4 million in May. The subscriber base in April was 1,203 million. Reliance Jio dominated the mobile subscriber base — including 5G FWA (fixed wireless access) connections — with a 40.92% share and a net addition of 2.7 million customers, taking its total wireless base to 472.4 million. Bharti Airtel held a 33.61% share, with a net addition of 275,000, bringing its total subscriber base to 390 million in May. Vi lost 274,000, BSNL 135,000, MTNL 470,000 and Reliance Communications lost 30 mobile subscribers in May. In the wireline segment, Reliance Jio led with a net subscriber addition of 1.276 million, followed by Bharti Airtel, which added around 99,000 million new subscribers. Tata Teleservices added 4,890, Vi 1,795, and STPL 252 new subscribers. State-run MTNL was the biggest loser of fixed-line customers in May, losing 66,834 while BSNL lost over 46,000 customers. The total number of broadband subscribers in the country reached 974.8 million in May. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel submitted internet subscription data in the required format to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India after a five-month gap. Reliance Jio led the broadband segment with 494.4 million subscribers (including both mobile and wireless segments), followed by Bharti Airtel with 302 million, Vi 126.6 million, BSNL 34.3 million, and Atria Convergence 2.32 million. The 5G FWA subscriber base declined to 7.4 million in May from 7.5 million in April due to Reliance Jio shifting over 1 million Fixed Wireless Access - Unlicensed Band Radio (FWA-UBR) subscribers to the FTTx category, which falls under the fixed-line segment.

MediaTek to grow India investments, expand share in flagship smartphone chipset market: Executive
NEW DELHI: Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek said it will grow its investments in India, and work with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expand its market share in the booming premium segment this year. 'We want to improve our flagship market worldwide, including India. People in India are becoming rich, so they can buy a better phone. We see this (premium segment) as very important. So, we will enlarge our investment in India and work with our key OEM partners to bring their products together with our flagship chipsets,' Thomas CH, senior director (product marketing), MediaTek, told ETTelecom in an interview. 'That is our top priority this year. We will see the premium market growing in India,' he added. The company, however, did not divulge further details. Citing a study from Counterpoint Research, the executive said MediaTek has been leading India's smartphone chipset market for 20 quarters. In the most recent January-March 2025 quarter, MediaTek led with a 45% share, followed by its US-headquartered rival Qualcomm with a 32% share. Meanwhile, Indian consumers' demand for high-end products, including electronics and smartphones, is unabated. In the January-March quarter of this year, the ultra-premium smartphone segment, categorised at ₹45,000 and above, grew by 15% year-on-year (by volume) while the average selling price (ASP) has seen an increase of 11% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) post-COVID, Counterpoint said. The top executive said that the global smartphone market has stabilised (by volumes), and is growing at 1-3% every year, but the revenue is expected to increase due to the sales of expensive devices. So MediaTek will keep investing in flagship chipsets, mainstream chipsets, and the whole portfolio. This is because OEMs are looking for wide range of SoC support. We look forward to the smartphone market getting bigger because, from the product point of view, everyone will have a better smartphone in the future said. The Rick Tsai-led chipset vendor is further working with homegrown handset makers, such as Lava, for 5G smartphones priced as low as ₹8,000, and budget-friendly 4G models. 'We are also helping to accelerate the adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in India. Last year, HFCL unveiled its 5G FWA Indoor CPE powered by the MediaTek T750, which delivers 5G speeds right out of the box. We power key household connectivity devices from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio,' Anku Jain, managing director (MD) of MediaTek India , told ETTelecom during the interview. MediaTek is also bullish on India's growing automobile industry, particularly the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where it provides solutions for Kinetic Green Flex and Kinetic Green E-Luna X1. Last year, Jio Things and MediaTek collaborated on a 4G Smart Android Digital Cluster and Smart Module for two-wheeler EVs. MediaTek also works with Indian automakers designing four-wheel vehicles, with some vehicles using MediaTek's infotainment solutions, including Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia. The Hsinchu-headquartered company is focusing on enhancing its chipsets' photography, gaming, and efficiency. Thomas said MediaTek has 'invested a lot' in accelerated processing unit (APU), and its in-house neural processing unit (NPU), to help large language models (LLMs) run locally on-device.

Bharti Airtel Hits Record High, Crosses Rs 2000 Mark For First Time; Time To Book Profit Or Hold?
Shares of Bharti Airtel surged over 2 per cent on June 26, reaching a fresh all-time high; What should investors do now? Bharti Airtel Shares: Shares of Bharti Airtel surged over 2 per cent on June 26, reaching a fresh all-time high of Rs 2,003.80 apiece on the BSE. The stock has recorded gains in six out of the past seven trading sessions, rising over 8 per cent during this period. So far in 2025, Bharti Airtel's shares have rallied over 25 per cent. Over the past one year, the telecom major has delivered nearly 37 per cent returns, and a massive 263 per cent gain over the last five years. The latest rally in the stock price has been supported by upbeat analyst commentary. Axis Securities, in its weekly technical note, highlighted that the stock has formed a strong bullish candle on the charts. The brokerage said that, as per its analysis, Bharti Airtel could rise to Rs 2,115 per share in the near term. On Monday, global brokerage firm Jefferies reiterated its 'Buy' rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 2,370. The brokerage outlined four key reasons to own the stock. First, it sees the company as the best way to play the ongoing consumption story in India. Second, it highlights a significant runway for mid-teens revenue growth over the medium term. Third, the brokerage noted that the company's capital expenditure intensity has structurally declined, improving cash flows and return ratios. Lastly, it believes the stock's valuations have significant scope for re-rating, offering attractive upside potential for investors. Earlier, Macquarie also maintained a positive outlook and raised its target price on Bharti Airtel to Rs 2,050. The brokerage continues to consider the telecom giant a core investment idea, retaining it in its 'India Super 6s' list. Macquarie has also adopted a scenario-weighted valuation framework to better account for Bharti Airtel's long-term growth prospects and shifting market conditions. Brokerages widely agree that improving financials and a favourable sector backdrop point to continued strength in Bharti Airtel shares over the coming quarters. Bharti Airtel is expected to benefit significantly from India's booming 5G adoption. According to an updated report by Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson, India's 5G subscriber base is projected to rise more than three-fold to 98 crore users by 2030. In contrast, the number of 4G users is expected to decline by 60 per cent, to 23 crore during the same timeframe. 'By the end of 2024, 5G subscriptions in the country had already reached 290 million, accounting for 24 per cent of total mobile subscriptions," the report stated. This figure is estimated to jump to 980 million by 2030, making up 75 per cent of all mobile subscribers. Ericsson's report also highlighted that India's rapid 5G expansion is being driven by soaring data consumption, robust mid-band spectrum coverage, the growing penetration of 5G smartphones, and widespread Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments. Indias per user data use to hit 62 GB/month by 2030, from 32 GB now: Report
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Data traffic per smartphone user in India is projected to grow to 62 GB per month by 2030 from current levels of 32 GB per month which is still the highest in the world, according to Ericsson Mobility report The report stated that this significant growth will require a need for robust 5G infrastructure in the country. The report further adds that as of 2024, 4G remains the dominant subscription type with 53 per cent of the subscribers. It is forecast to decline to 230 million subscriptions by 2030, as users continue migrating to 5G. The sharp increase is driven by growing 5G internet penetration, affordable smartphones, and a rising appetite for video and digital services across urban and rural markets. Underpinned by strong population coverage, increasing data consumption, and accelerating Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments, 5G penetration will continue with robust growth. By December 2024, 5G subscriptions in the country reached 290 million, representing 24 per cent of total mobile subscriptions. This figure is projected to climb to around 980 million by 2030, accounting for 75 per cent of all mobile subscriptions. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said, "At Ericsson, we are proud to support the country's digitalisation based on the strong 4G and 5G infrastructure that we have set up in the country together with our partners, the communication service providers, that is enabling connectivity and driving inclusive growth in the country." On the global front, the 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.3 billion by 2030, and will make up two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions. It is projected that Western Europe will have the highest 5G subscription penetration in 2030 at 93 per cent, followed closely by North America at 91 per cent and the Global Capability Centres (GCC) at 90 per cent. The report adds that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly becoming a significant selling point for smartphones. Efforts are being made to expand AI beyond the high-end segment to enable the services for a broader market. With the growth of AI applications and model complexity, tasks will be computed both on the device and in the network. This will put uplink capabilities and latency more into the focus of both application service providers and communication service providers, thereby adding to 5G subscriptions, it said. India has made large-scale mid-band deployments and reached around 95 per cent of its population covered by 5G network by 2024 end. According to the government data, since its launch in October 2022, 5G services have been rolled out in all states/UTs across the country and presently it is available in 99.6 per cent of the districts in the country.
