Your letters: Summer is short — open our splash parks
Saturday was a perfect summer day in a city that doesn't have many such days. Disappointingly, the children's splash pool at Century Gardens was dry, as were all of the park's water features. I have not seen the pool operational at all so far this summer. Article content Several blocks east down Stephen Avenue, there is no longer a pool at Olympic Plaza for the kids to play in, because — as is so typical of this city — it is being rebuilt (rather than renovated) after decades of neglect. A few blocks south, in Central Memorial Park, the kids' water feature is not operational, and only one of the park's two fountains is working. No children, no parents, no community vitality. Article content Article content Article content Article content Rob Jobst, Calgary Article content Article content For more than 20 years, Poilievre has been promising to cut back the civil service, and he was elected seven times on that platform. The fact is, he was rejected this time in Carleton because he ignored residents, forgot about them and failed to represent their concerns. Article content Battle River-Crowfoot beware. Article content David Small, Ottawa Article content Article content Article content Kudos for another successful Stampede Article content Thank you to the Calgary Stampede, its board, volunteers and my fellow Calgary citizens. You put on a heck of a show and successfully presented this event to the world. Article content Today, I am one proud Calgarian. Thank you. Article content Werner Pointmeier, Calgary Article content Article content Blaming Tod Button for the Flames' lack of a Stanley Cup is misguided. Since 2001, they have consistently found NHL talent — from stars such as Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, to late-round gems such as Andrew Mangiapane and Dustin Wolf. Article content The draft is always a gamble, but Calgary's scouts have found value more often than not. The real issue has been shaky management and a revolving door of head coaches. Poor asset handling and short-term thinking during the Brad Treliving era did more to stall progress than any 'analytics' in scouting.

Calgary Flames qualify six pending restricted free agents
The Calgary Flames completed some important paperwork Monday, presenting qualifying offers to six pending restricted free agents — forwards Morgan Frost, Rory Kerins, Sam Morton and Connor Zary, plus defence prospects Yan Kuznetsov and Jeremie Poirier. Article content A qualifying offer ensures the team will retain their rights as the signing window opens, although they must still finalize new contracts with each. Article content Article content Frost and Zary are regulars in the Flames' lineup and on the power-play unit, so it's a no-brainer to keep both around. (After Kevin Bahl inked a six-year contract over the weekend, an extension for the 23-year-old Zary should now be Craig Conroy's top priority.) Article content Kerins was a pleasant surprise this past season, leading the Wranglers with 61 points and also notching four assists in five games during his first career call-up. Article content Morton, who was tapped for his NHL debut in Game 82 and made it extra special by scoring a goal that night, should compete for the Flames' fourth-line centre job this fall. Article content Article content Kuznetsov is knocking on the door as a stay-at-home defenceman, while Poirier has plenty of offensive skill but must continue to hone his work in his own zone. Both Kuznetsov and Poirier are left-shots, and there is currently an opening on that side of Calgary's blue-line. Article content

Calgary Flames qualify six pending restricted free agents
Article content The Flames let the deadline pass on minor-league goaltenders Waltteri Ignatjew and Connor Murphy, meaning they will now look for work elsewhere. Ignatjew, the backup for the AHL's Wranglers this past winter, is planning to return to Sweden. There were really no surprises in Monday's announcement from the Saddledome. Frost and Zary are regulars in the Flames' lineup and on the power-play unit, so it's a no-brainer to keep both around. (After Kevin Bahl inked a six-year contract over the weekend, an extension for the 23-year-old Zary should now be Craig Conroy's top priority.) Both Kuznetsov and Poirier are left-shots, and there is currently an opening on that side of Calgary's blue-line. Frost and Morton are both eligible for arbitration.
