Mystery as man dies on US flight but then completely disappears

The body of a passenger who died mid-air on a Turkish Airlines flight has reportedly gone missing. Flight TK79 took off from Istanbul and was in the air for almost 12 hours when a passenger had a 'severe medical emergency' on July 13. The unnamed individual died while the plane was flying over Greenland, with the decision being made to carry on to Chicago in the US. This is because Chicago O'Hare Airport had suitable medical facilities to deal with an in-flight death, according to Aviation A2Z. However, after touch down, the dead body has seemingly disappeared into thin air. Turkish Airlines say the corpse was removed from the plane and transferred to a flight to San Francisco, the New York Post reports. But the local medical examiner's officers told US media that it never received the body, according to San Francisco news site SFGATE. The Cook County office also does not have records documenting the death or confirming a transfer. The remaining passengers continued on their way to San Francisco in a separate flight. No more information has been released about the identity of the person who died on board Flight TK79. Metro has approached Turkish Airlines, Chicago Airport and Cook County Medical Examiner's Office for comment. Mid-air flights are as rare as 0.21 deaths per million passengers. Turkish Airlines Passenger Dies Mid-Flight, The Body Has Mysteriously Disappeared

Last Updated: Typically, in the event of a medical emergency, flight crews seek the nearest airport for an emergency landing. A passenger on a Turkish Airlines flight bound for San Francisco died mid-air earlier this month. In a bizarre twist, the body of the deceased has since gone missing, according to a report by Aviation A2Z. The incident occurred on July 13 aboard Turkish Airlines Flight TK79, which was en route from Istanbul to San Francisco. The passenger, whose identity and nationality have not yet been disclosed, reportedly suffered a medical emergency and died during the flight. Initially, the crew considered diverting the aircraft to Keflavik Airport in Iceland, which would have allowed the body to be handled before reaching North America. However, they ultimately decided to continue toward the US, reportedly to remain within US jurisdiction for legal and procedural clarity. Typically, in the event of a medical emergency, flight crews seek the nearest airport for an emergency landing. However, in the unfortunate event of a death, the urgency to land immediately is often reconsidered, especially if the passenger has already passed away. Upon entering the US airspace, the crew diverted the flight to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), a major hub equipped to handle medical and emergency situations. Turkish Airlines' US station manager, Ertugrul Gulsen, confirmed that the rest of the passengers were rebooked on alternate flights to complete their journey to San Francisco. SFGATE that there was no record of receiving any body from that flight. To date, the whereabouts of the deceased passenger's remains remain unknown, and Turkish Airlines has not disclosed any further details, including the person's name or nationality. The mystery has raised serious questions about how the situation was handled after landing. This isn't the first time when the Turkish Airlines has experienced a mid-air fatality. In October 2024, pilot Ilcehin Pehlivan died mid-flight while traveling from Seattle after suffering a medical emergency. Report: Turkish Airlines flight to San Francisco diverted after passenger dies mid-flight

A passenger died on a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to San Francisco on Sunday, causing the transatlantic flight to divert to Chicago, according to a report from the flight journal Aviation A2Z. Data from aviation tracker FlightAware showed Flight TK79, operated by an Airbus A350-941, departed Istanbul at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time on July 13, en route to San Francisco International Airport. While cruising over Greenland, the crew was alerted to a passenger experiencing a medical emergency. The aircraft entered a holding pattern over the region as flight attendants administered CPR and consulted medical personnel on the ground. 'This maneuver is a standard procedure that provides time to assess the passenger's condition, coordinate with medical professionals via radio, and evaluate diversion options,' according to Aviation A2Z. Initially, the crew considered diverting to Keflavik Airport in Iceland, a common emergency stop for transatlantic flights. However, after the passenger was pronounced dead mid-flight, the crew opted to continue toward North America. The aircraft was rerouted to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, due to its medical and logistical capabilities, where it landed safely nearly 12 hours after its initial departure.
