Why Anne Burrell took a break from hosting ‘Worst Cooks in America' before her death
Anne Burrell stepped back from television a year before her tragic death. The celebrity chef, who died at age 55 on Tuesday, hosted the beloved Food Network series 'Worst Cooks in America' for 27 seasons, from its inception in 2010 to 2024. In March, Burrell went on Tori Spelling's 'misSPELLING' podcast and opened up about the reason she took a break from the show. Advertisement 8 Anne Burrell. Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock 'I can cook, yes, I can do TV, but also, what else? I've got more to do in my life, I feel like,' she told the 'Beverly Hills, 90210' star, 52. 'Interestingly, I just started taking acting classes. I started yesterday, actually … It's like an improv for actors' class,' she explained. 'I got there and it's like eight people in the class. I'm the oldest one. Every other person has like, 'Oh, I have a master's in fine arts in theater.'' I have nieces and nephews. So I'm like, [being a stepmom] is the perfect amount of parenting for me.' A month later, Burrell gushed over married life, telling the Daily Mail: 'October will be four years. It seems like it's been four minutes. I don't know if it's a honeymoon [phase] but I feel like it's settled into married life days which I really enjoy.' 8 Anne Burrell during her Food Network run. Chef Duff Goldman reveals ‘complex relationship' with Anne Burrell after her death at 55
Chef Duff Goldman is honoring the late Anne Burrell. The pastry chef, 50, penned a touching tribute to the cook after she was found dead at her home on Tuesday at age 55. 'I've written and re-written this post so many times in the past 24 hours and I just don't know what to say. Anne and I became friends in probably 2006,' Goldman wrote via Instagram on Thursday. 'She was going through some stuff and I had heard that she was feeling it so on a trip to NYC from Baltimore I had made her a cake that said 'Don't let the bastards win.' She never did.' 8 Duff Goldman and Anne Burrell. duffgoldman/Instagram Despite their friendship having its ups and downs since meeting in the mid-2000s, the TV personality always wished his fellow kitchen connoisseur well. 'We had a complex relationship and I remember the last conversation we had before our paths drifted was a pretty feisty debate about the merits of catfish. I believe the words 'trash fish,' 'tastes like mud,' and 'cake boy' were used, haha,' Goldman continued. 'Anne and I always had a spirited and somewhat acerbic back and forth. I really never knew why our paths drifted but I always hoped that wherever she was, Anne was doing well and was finding some happiness.' 8 Chef Anne Burrell. Getty Images for NYCWFF The pair ran into one another a few years back in New York City and had a chance to speak. Although Goldman didn't disclose what he and Burrell talked about, he did write that 'that conversation left my heart lifted and full of light, for it truly seemed to me that Anne really had found a measure of happiness and love. Life is tough, and we have to be tough to get through it.' Goldman added, 'Anne was as tough as they come, but when you got past the armor there was a depth of compassion and kindness that was absolutely beautiful. My heart sings when I think of the love and tranquility that it seems Anne had found recently.' 8 Chef Anne Burrell attends Food Network's Food and Wine Festival. Getty Images for NYCWFF Burrell tied the knot with Stuart Claxton in 2021 and stepped away from hosting 'Worst Cooks in America' in 2024 after 14 seasons on air. The TV star continued to share glimpses into her personal life on social media over the years and also started doing improv in New York City. Goldman concluded his heartfelt post, 'Anne, wherever you are I hope they have slow moving rivers because when I get there, we'll get a couple of rods, a pint of chicken livers, and a sixer and I'll teach you how to catch and cook the best catfish you ever had. Rest up, chef.' Many of Burrell's fellow chefs shared their condolences after news of her passing broke Tuesday. 8 Chef Anne Burrell on ABC's 'Good Morning America.' 'I can't quite believe it — such a strong, vibrant, fearless woman, so full of life and love, could be gone so soon.' 'Anne was a rockstar! I came to know her well through multiple seasons of Worst Cooks on Food Network, and she became so much more than a colleague.' Bobby Flay, for his part, broke his silence on Thursday, writing: ''Worst Cooks in America' was the funnest show on TV. All of your co-hosts (me included) were just alongside for the Anne Burrell ride.' 8 Anne Burrell the 2025 City Harvest Gala. Getty Images for City Harvest The restaurateur, 60, expressed that 'the greatest gift I got from AB was turning me on to a world of Maine Coon Cats (including Nacho)… a gift that I'll have forever.' Why Riviera Maya should be your next holiday destination
Margaritas at sunset, palm-fringed beaches, cooling dips in azure waters: picture the perfect break on the Caribbean coast and your mind's eye may well have created the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula of south-east Mexico. This 83-mile-long swathe of palm-fringed sands is lapped by tumbling turquoise waves and stretches all the way down to the border with Belize. Admittedly, if you're travelling as a family, a couple, solo or with a group of friends, it's all too tempting to spend long lazy days on the beach at your hotel – and you'd want to leave plenty of time for that. But this is a part of the world that's crammed with other things to see and do. So, where do you start? Well, the dramatic ruins of Tulum are some of the most impressive you'll see – and not just in the country, but anywhere in the world. Teetering on a cliff edge overlooking the sea, the ancient ruins offer a fascinating insight into Mayan culture – and there's even a beach for a refreshing swim after you've dipped your toe in ancient Mayan history. Next? Head on to Calle Sol Oriente in boho Tulum town, where you can pause for photos taken in front of vibrant street art depicting sea turtles, jaguars and flowers, while checking out the stalls and picking up a locally made souvenir or two. If you prefer to immerse yourself in nature you're in the right place: tours through the mangroves give you a chance to soak up the serenity of this part of the world, listening to birdsong and the gentle lap of water as you go. Or for something a little livelier, this is a part of the world that's packed with fun events, from the annual Riviera Maya Jazz festival in November to the Food and Wine Festival in September. But travel here at any time of year and you'll be spoiled for drink and dining options, from toes-in-the-sand bars for tasting tequilas and street stalls serving up zingy tacos to juice cafes and candle-lit fine dining. And travelling with British Airways Holidays comes with benefits that include low deposits, Atol protection and generous baggage allowances. All this is assuming you can stray from your hotel, but that may well be trickier than you think, with several luxurious Melia hotels to choose from. One option is Paradisus La Perla - Adults Only - Riviera Maya, a super-sleek adults-only stay that's just a 45-minute transfer from Cancun International Airport. Surrounded by mangrove forests and strung along the beach, it feels remote and exotic, yet it's minutes away from buzzy Playa del Carmen, with its shops, cafes and nightlife. The all-inclusive element of your stay means that you'll have delicious food and drink on tap in the six restaurants, from authentic lip-tingling Mexican favourites like tacos to ice-cold local beers and smoky mezcals and cocktails. The Reserve offerings (an adults-only upgrade offering even more exclusive services and amenities) give you the chance to try incredible cultural experiences as part of your stay, from a Mayan shaman ritual to swimming in pristine cave pools known as cenotes. Your Reserve benefits also include a destination concierge to arrange excursions and reservations and to ensure your every whim is taken care of while you revel in the romantic touches of the resort – think double sun loungers slightly submerged beneath the pool at the front of your suite, plus hammocks and Bali beds, or a a relaxing morning in the spa to ease you into your day. If you long for a sun-soaked holiday with your family then try Paradisus Playa del Carmen instead. It's a haven for all ages, not least because it's also a speedy transfer from the airport – an essential after a long international flight. Palm-fringed sands and mangrove, the option of swim-up rooms and numerous pools with shaded cabanas and corners make the perfect play areas, as does the waterpark with its slides, splashing buckets and fountains. If your children are keen on making friends and you need an hour or two (or more) to yourself then the excellent kids club for ages one to 11 is just the place, and there's a teen room too. During the day they'll have their pick of toys and activities, while extended opening hours mean you can opt for a meal out without your kids as company, or if they're with you then the choice of eight restaurants – with international and Mexican cuisine – means they'll be happy with their meal choice. And when they're happy, you're happy too. British Airways Holidays packages include a generous baggage allowance for each customer and come with full Atol protection for complete peace of mind. Secure your Melia holiday to Mexico with a low deposit and enjoy flexible payments until you fly*. *Based on two sharing. Full balance due seven weeks before departure. Subject to availability. T&Cs apply.
