Steve Sarkisian makes bold statement about Longhorns football
Since arriving in Austin, Steve Sarkisian has turned the Texas Longhorns into one of the best football programs in the country. That is poised to continue with the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class in the country. The Longhorns have also been busy building for 2026 with 15 commits, two of whom are five-star prospects. Based on his on-field results, Sarkisian is seen as one of the best coaches in the nation. Recently, the Longhorns head coach made an appearance on the '3rd and Longhorn' show and explained why he believes that the Forty Acres is the best place in the country to play college football. "I honestly think this is the best place in the country to come play football at," Sarkisian said. "I firmly believe that, and I think we have the stats, the nuances and the information to back that up," Sarkisian said. "Who's the one school that's gone to back-to-back college football playoffs, back-to-back semifinals? Who's the one school their first year in the SEC that went to the SEC Championship game? Who has the most draft picks in the NFL draft over the last two years? ... Who has last year signed the best class in the country, the year before that a top-three class in the country, the year before that a top-five recruiting class in the country?' Under Sarkisian's leadership, Texas has become a fixture in the College Football Playoff. Last year, they fell two wins short of a national title and are one of the early favorites as the regular season quickly approaches. While football is his specialty, Sarkisian also highlighted where Texas stands academically. Advertisement "Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said. While, in the end, Sarkisian's impact will be measured in wins and losses, he did not hold back when expressing his support for the school he calls home. The Longhorns' leader made it clear that the university has his support across several areas, beyond athletics. Mikel Arteta set to lose Arsenal assistant Carlos Cuesta to Parma
Arsenal assistant manager Carlos Cuesta is set to leave the club to take charge at Parma in what will be a significant loss to Mikel Arteta's coaching team. The 29-year-old, who is considered one of the most talented young coaches in the game, has travelled to Italy for talks on a contract that will run until 2029. Cuesta would replace Cristian Chivu as head coach after the Romanian's departure to Inter Milan. Cuesta signed a new contract with Arsenal until 2027 in April and his exit would leave Arteta needing to replace one of the most trusted confidants in his backroom staff. Since joining the club five years ago, Cuesta has become a key part of Arteta's core coaching group, along with his other two assistant managers, Albert Stuivenberg and Miguel Molina, as well as his set piece coach Nicolas Jover and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana. Cuesta, right, would become the youngest head coach in Europe's top five leagues GETTY Cuesta's role has included analysing matches with Arteta in meetings, leading sessions with an emphasis on tactics and conducting one-on-one meetings with players, often centred on video analysis. The Mallorcan speaks six languages — English, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, French and Italian — which has made him particularly valuable in that area. At 29, Cuesta would become the youngest head coach in Europe's top five leagues, with Como's Cesc Fabregas, 38, the youngest in Serie A last season. Fabian Hurzeler, 32, at Brighton & Hove Albion, is the youngest in the Premier League. Cuesta has a link to Parma through, Federico Cherubini, the club's chief executive. Cherubini was the academy manager and then sports co-ordinator at Juventus while Cuesta coached Juve's under-17 and then under-23 sides between 2018 and 2020. Cuesta started at Atletico Madrid and was invited by Arteta to visit Manchester City as part of his coaching education. Arteta was working as an assistant at City to Pep Guardiola at the time and was impressed enough to bring Cuesta to Arsenal in 2021. Cuesta will face a difficult job at Parma, who were one of Italy's strongest teams in the 1990s but have spent the past decade climbing back up from the fourth tier. Parma finished 16th in Serie A last season, five points above the relegation zone, in what was their first year back in the top flight after three seasons in the second tier.
