Premier League club tipped to land treble after deals in summer transfer window
Only two English clubs have been able to land a treble to date (Picture: Getty) Jason McAteer has tipped one of the Premier League biggest clubs to land a treble in 2025-26 after their impressive summer transfer window. Manchester United and Manchester City are the only English clubs to achieve the historic feat to date – clinched in 1999 and 2023 respectively. The treble is secured by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season and is incredibly hard to do. The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have never won trebles – but McAteer feels Arne Slot's side are genuinely capable of doing it this term. The Reds, who landed last season's Premier League title in Slot's debut campaign as head coach, have already made a number of high-profile signings including Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Liverpool have also reached a full agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth £79m. Jason McAteer backs Liverpool for 2026 treble Liverpool won the Premier League title last term under Arne Slot (Picture: Reuters) Former Liverpool defender McAteer told William Hill Vegas: 'If Liverpool were to win back-to-back Premier League titles, it would be phenomenal. 'They don't need to win the Champions League to call it a great season, but to be a truly legendary team, you must win both competitions or even complete the treble, like Manchester United in 1998-99. 'Liverpool have been in contention in recent years, going deep in four competitions. 'The signings that Liverpool have made this summer mean they now have a squad capable of going all the way. Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £116m (Picture: Getty) 'The likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike mean they have a team and a squad set up not just to compete, but to win the Champions League and the Premier League. 'The quality is undoubtedly there, and so is the experience. 'When you have players like Mohamed Salah still delivering 30 plus goals a season, a world-class centre-half like Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson in goal, who keeps clean sheets for fun, there is absolutely no reason why Liverpool cannot be genuine treble contenders. Mohamed Salah was the Premier League Player of the Season last term (Picture: Getty) 'There is a reason why trebles are not won often – Manchester City did it recently, but we all know pressure builds and fatigue, injuries, and the mental toll all mount up. 'But they are prepared for that – Arne Slot's squad has the ingredients to do something legendary.' More Trending McAteer has also suggested that the new Champions League format – only introduced last season – hurt Liverpool as they crashed out to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. 'Despite being knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain, you have to say that Liverpool had a phenomenal Champions League campaign last season,' he added. 'They came up against PSG at exactly the wrong time. Remember, they won in Paris in the first leg and were only defeated at Anfield on penalties. 'It was more of a disappointment because Liverpool finished top of the league phase. In a different format, maybe a fairer one, Liverpool would have gone all the way.' When is the next Club World Cup and where could it be held?
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is nearing its end with the final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey on Sunday. Reaction to the revamped competition has been mixed to say the least but nevertheless speculation is already growing about the next Club World Cup and where it could be held. Several teams have already qualified for the next tournament but which Premier League sides will be there? Here's everything you need to know about the next Club World Cup, including when is it, the host nation and how teams qualify: Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Formerly an annual competition, the Club World Cup is now to be held every four years, in an effort to emulate the country World Cup. That means the next edition of the Club World Cup is scheduled to take place from June to July 2029. The location of the 2029 Club World Cup has yet to be selected, but several countries have already expressed an interest in becoming the host nation. A few weeks ago, Brazil stated their intent to host, following the success of their four clubs at this summer's tournament, including Fluminense who reached the semi-finals before losing to Chelsea. Samir Xaud, President of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), says he has spoken to FIFA President Gianni Infantino about the matter: 'It all started with an introductory conversation. 'I talked about my goals as head of the CBF and said that we want to be closer to FIFA. I praised the event and the level of Brazilian clubs and, finally, I made the country available to host the next Club World Cup. 'President Infantino was very happy and said that it is totally possible. Now we will work to make it happen. It will be a great goal.' Qatar are also interested after they hosted the 2022 World Cup, but like that tournament the event would have to be moved to the winter months to avoid the extreme heat of the summer, something European teams would strongly object to. The 2030 country World Cup is being hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, and the latter two have declared their interest in hosting the Club World Cup on their own as a warm-up event, much in the same way the USA are doing this summer. It has been previously reported that Australia, either on their own or in a joint-bid with New Zealand, could host, while FIFA have also considered choosing the USA again. The 2025 Club World Cup may not have finished yet but already four teams have qualified for the 2029 edition. At the time of writing, the next tournament will stick to the same qualification process and slot allocation, meaning 12 European teams will take part, with a maximum of two per country. More Trending This includes the winners of the Champions League from 2025 to 2028, meaning PSG have already booked their place after thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the UCL final in May. Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia) – Winner of the 2024/25 AFC Champions League Elite PSG (France) – Winners of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Pyramids (Egypt) – Winner of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League Cruz Azul (Mexico) – Winner of the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup The rest of the European spots will be given to the best performing teams in the Champions League over the four year period from 2024 to 2028. As it stands, Arsenal and Aston Villa would be the Premier League representatives as they were the two best performing English sides in the UCL last season, reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively. However, this could all change as there has been talk of further expanding the competition from 32 teams to 48. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Fluminense vs Chelsea UK time, TV channel, stream, team news and odds
Chelsea will look to book their spot in the Club World Cup final with a victory over Fluminense in Tuesday's semi-finals. Enzo Maresca's side squeezed past Palmeiras with a 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals and face off against Brazillian opponents again in the final four. Fluminense boast former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva in their ranks and are yet to lose a game all tournament, with victories over Inter Milan and Al-Hilal already in the knockout stages. While representing a lengthy add-on to what was already an arduous season for Maresca's side, the Blues will be acutely aware of the riches on offer should they go all the way and become the inaugural winners of the expanded competition. The winner of Tuesday's semi-final will face off against either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's final. One of Joao Pedro or Nicolas Jackson is expected to replace Delap, while Tosin Adarabioyo could partner Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back in Colwill's absence. Reece James can feature despite a slight niggle, but Romeo Lavia won't be risked after picking up a minor injury. 4/1 Fluminense9/4 Draw 4/7 Chelsea Odds courtesy of Betfair (& subject to change) Heading into the semi-finals, Maresca rejected the suggestion that his side were favourites to reach the final and said his side would have to be wary of the threat posed by their Brazilian opponents. More Trending 'No, I don't think that Chelsea is the favourite. You said it,' Maresca said in his pre-match press conference. 'I don't think that Chelsea is the favourite. I think that at this point, there is no favourite. 'At this point, the teams that have come here, it's because they deserve it, because they have something good, and they have to do everything to try to win and get to the final. 'They have a very good coach, with experience, they have quality players, Arias, Cano, there are a lot of players who are good players, and at this point in the tournament, I think that any game is going to be very difficult, because the competition is coming to an end.' Ambulances rushed to the scene at kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway to find the two brothers dead inside the charred sportscar, CNN Portugal reported. Follow Metro's live blog for full coverage of Diogo Jota's death Authorities confirmed that the bodies were unrecognisable, and DNA tests were required for formal identification with rescue efforts hampered by the vehicle fire. The supercar's licence plate and documents found inside the smouldering remains allowed the accident to be linked back to the Portuguese international and his younger brother. As accident investigators scour the scene, Spanish police released a statement confirming that a potential tyre blowout could have caused the crash. They said: 'The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking. 'It was in the early hours, 00.30 (23.30 BST), in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. 'The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.' Confirming the identities of the two men killed in the crash, the Guardia Civil added: 'The player and his brother, André Silva.' CNN Portugal is reporting that Diogo Jota was driving to the Spanish port of Santander, where he was supposed to catch a boat back to England to link up with his teammates. He had allegedly been advised by doctors against catching a flight as he was recovering from surgery. His last season was plagued with injuries, including a rib issue, but there was no confirmation of any surgery before his tragic death. It is not clear who was driving the supercar at the time of the crash. A recent poll by Spain's Organisation of Users and Consumers found that Spanish drivers ranked the A-52 as one of the worst routes in the country due to the road condition and the lack of safety barriers. Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo was among the first to post a heartbreaking tribute to his international teammate and his brother. 'It doesn't make sense,' he wrote. 'Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married.' The striker sent his condolences to Jota's family, wife and children, and adds: 'I know you will always be with them. 'Rest in Peace, Diogo e André. We will miss you.' Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told reporters he was 'devastated' for the Jota family.
