Atlanta Cup starting lineup: Joey Logano wins pole as Fords dominate qualifying
HAMPTON, Ga. — Joey Logano will start on the pole for Saturday night's Cup race at EchoPark Speedway, as Fords took the top eight spots in the 40-car field. He claimed the top starting spot with a lap of 178.960 mph. It is Logano's first pole of the season and 32nd of his Cup career. MORE: Cup starting lineup For the second Atlanta race in a row, Team Penske and its affiliate, Wood Brothers Racing, grabbed the top four starting positions. Dustin Long, Josh Berry, who drives for the Wood Brothers, will start next to Logano on the front row. Berry posted the same lap time as Logano but Logano got the pole because ties are broken by car owner points. Logano's car ranks higher than Berry's car in the owner standings. Team Penske's Ryan Blaney will start third after a lap of 178.937 mph, and teammate Austin Cindric qualified fourth with a lap of 178.626 mph. Ryan Preece, who drives for RFK Racing, qualified fifth at 178.092. He was followed by teammate Brad Keselowski (177.960 mph), Cole Custer (177.949) and Zane Smith (177.920). Alex Bowman (177.675) will start ninth as the top Chevrolet in qualifying. Pocono winner Chase Briscoe qualified 10th with a lap of 177.635 mph and is the top Toyota. The green flag for Saturday's race is scheduled to wave at 7:19 p.m. ET on TNT and TruTV

JOHN MURDOCH'S DRIVE TIME: We sample the Puma Crossover and share details on Suzuki's e Vitara launch
The Puma is fun to drive, economical and practical as well as having stylish looks. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John samples Ford's biggest seller - the stylish Puma Crossover - which proves to be an ideal family car, and shares details on Suzuki's launch of its first EV - the e Vitara. The Ford Puma has been one of the UK's top selling cars since it first arrived on the scene over five years ago. It is Ford's best seller, taking over from the popular Fiesta and it also sells well throughout mainland Europe. I have sampled just about every version of it since it started to make an impact and it is a Crossover I still like. It brought something new to the party when it was launched and it rightly met with deserved praise for its style and innovative features. The Puma is also fun to drive, economical and practical as well as having stylish looks. It has some neat touches, like the pouncing Puma that appears in the dash when you press the starter button or as a puddle light in the dark. It stands out from the rest of the small crossover crowd because there is plenty of room for four to travel in comfort and you can pack in five for shorter journeys. A smart steering wheel houses the usual push-button controls while the dashboard layout is typical Ford with a central display screen for connectivity and sat nav but it also comes fitted with a smart TFT instrument cluster and a huge amount of equipment. The seats are very comfortable and fully adjustable and there is good all-round visibility. As in all Fords, the switches and controls are clear and easy to read and use. A Quickclear heated windscreen is ideal for winter motoring and there is a decent sound system as well as Ford SYNC 3 navigation and full smart phone integration. On the practical side the Puma boasts impressive carrying capacity. The boot is large for a car of this size and comes complete with Ford's MegaBox. This is an 80-litre storage space which lies beneath the split level boot floor and is ideal for carrying wet sports equipment, muddy wellies or anything else that is liable to cause a mess. It has a drain plug at the bottom and can be hosed out afterwards. If you need even more space you can collapse the split-folding rear seats to get class-leading room. This flagship ST sporty version costing £33,260, sits at the top of the range and has a 1.0-litre EcoBoost three cylinder petrol engine linked to mild hybrid technology and is good for 170ps. Digital Aqua Blue paint adds £800 to the tab and if you want the Track Pack it will cost you another £1050. It takes just 7.4 seconds to tackle the sprint to 62mph before going on to a top speed of 130mph. According to the official figures it is capable of as much as 55.4mpg with a low figure of 39.2mpg and I averaged over 48mpg during many miles of mixed driving. You get lots of advanced driver assistance aids like cruise control and pre-collision assist plus lane departure warning and handy drive modes for Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Trail conditions. You also get autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian/cyclist detection and hill start assist This model features exclusive 19-inch alloys, privacy glass, front fog lights with cornering lights and LED rear lamps. The kit list wants for nothing and you get a wireless charging pad, B&O sound system, Ford performance scuff plates, an ST flat bottomed steering wheel, red brake callipers, Ford performance seats as well as ST suspension to cope with the extra power. I liked this Puma and it was a fun car to drive with great handling and a more than decent ride even with the sports suspension. Stylish, practical, economical and entertaining, the Puma ticks all the boxes and it is also good value for money especially in the more modest versions. FAST FACTS: Price: £33,260. Mechanical: 170ps, 998cc, 3cyl petrol engine driving front wheels via 7 speed automatic gearbox. Max speed: 130mph. 0-62mph: 7.4 seconds. Insurance group: 19. CO2 emissions: 136g/km. Bik rating: 37 per cent. Warranty: Three years/60,000 miles. Overall rating (out of 5): 4.5. Meanwhile, Suzuki's first electric car will arrive later this year with the e Vitara priced from £29,999 for a 49kWh battery model. The e Vitara will be available in both Motion and Ultra grades as well offering ALLGRIP-e as an option - Suzuki's all-new four-wheel drive system - with the five vehicle range topping out from £37,799. ALLGRIP-e has been developed specifically for e Vitara and Suzuki is currently one of only a few brands to offer 4x4 as an option in the SUV EV sector. Suzuki has a vast experience of 4x4 technology and celebrates 55 years of ALLGRIP this year. Further specification and technical details of the e Vitara range will be issued closer to the public launch date. Buyers looking at finance options will see the e Vitara available from launch with zero per cent PCP, payable over two years and with a 20 per cent deposit. With the 61kWh Motion 2WD as an example, a deposit of £8,436 is required followed by monthly payments of £379 per month with the usual optional final payment required to keep the car at the end of the agreement. As an additional and attractive offer for customers ordering their e Vitara before September 30, Suzuki will provide a free Ohme home charger along with 10,000 miles of home charging credit. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Charlotte Councilmember asks the city to stop buying Teslas
Charlotte City Council is planning to buy 45 new electric vehicles when the new fiscal year starts in July. One Charlotte City Council member is asking the city manager not to purchase them from Tesla. At-Large Democratic Councilmember Lawana Slack-Mayfield made the remarks at Monday night's council meeting. ALSO READ: Political and market uncertainty in EV market could stifle burgeoning industry in Carolinas 'I want to publicly state that we have a number of EV companies out there now. I would prefer if the city of Charlotte moved in another direction than purchasing more Tesla vehicles,' Councilmember Mayfield said. 'It has been proven on multiple occasions that the instability exists, and I think we can make better choices of tax dollars and identify companies that align with our city's goals and expectations of truly being a welcoming city.' No councilmembers responded to Mayfield's statement. The Charlotte City Council will have to vote to authorize the EV purchases at a later date. Excluding the airport and CATS, the city of Charlotte has 178 electric vehicles in its fleet, and only 15 of them are Teslas. Of the 178 electric vehicles, 103 are Fords. The budget also calls for purchasing 155 hybrid vehicles and converting more of the buses at the airport to electric. Watch world's rarest sports cars & modern classics roar into central London – from 90s Bugatti to £60k Ford Capri
IF there's one thing I learned from my Thursday at the London Concours, it's that the world's greatest cars somehow look even better in the pouring rain. The capital was in full 'classic British summertime' mode as we gathered in the heart of the Big Smoke at the Honourable Artillery Company for the ultimate petrolhead garden party - with rain pelting down as we walked through the gates. The sight of dozens of the world's most iconic sports cars - the kind you usually only see in books or posters - all lined up on the green lawns, surrounded by white tents, made it all worthwhile. The London Concours, now in its ninth year, is a proper showcase of the world's most exotic supercars, plus a healthy dose of modern classics thrown in for good measure. It's the stuff of dreams for any petrolhead. Advertisement Perhaps the star of the show was the rarely-seen Bugatti EB110 SuperSport - one of the first cars to greet us as we walked in. One of just 33 SuperSport models ever made, this beast was originally built for the Brunei royal family back in 1993. Capable of over 200mph, it beat out legends like the Porsche 930 Turbo S, Porsche 911 GT1, McLaren F1 and Porsche 959 to win top honours in the Dream Cars class. When it was new, the EB110 SuperSport would've set you back around $380,000 (roughly £280,000). Advertisement Nowadays? Try $1.2 million (about £936,000). FAST FORDS While sheltering from the morning downpour under one of the tents, I couldn't help but notice the collection of legendary Fords nearby. A brief history of fast Fords A rare Ford RS200 was the pick of the bunch, which took the win in the Fast Fords class. This rally-spec beauty is one of just 15 ever built and spent the first 30 years of its life in storage, with just 1,100 miles on the clock. Advertisement These days, though, it's out and about during the summer months. It was joined by an X-Pack Ford Capri, upgraded by Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering programme with a wide body kit and lowered suspension. After a full restoration (with plenty of upgrades), this Capri is now worth around £57,000 - with half of that value coming from the enhancements alone. Other Ford icons were close by, including a beefy Ford Escort Cosworth RS - which can now fetch well over £100,000 at auctions - and the near-mythical Ford GT40. Advertisement SEE IT ALL Over the three-day event, there were bonus displays celebrating Aston Martin (Tuesday), Mercedes-Benz (Wednesday) and Supercars (Thursday). By the time you've walked around for a bit, your senses start to adjust to the sheer quality of cars on display. My attention was drawn to the Youngtimers display, which featured modern classics from the late 1980s and early 1990s that have become cult favourites among enthusiasts. The standout here was the Audi RS2 Avant - a super estate with sports car power and Porsche DNA - but the winner of the class was a 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with a rare 'Flachbau' (flat-nose) styling and pop-up headlights that scream 1980s cool. Advertisement HYPERCAR HEAVEN The Hypercars class was absolutely jaw-dropping, with a 2019 Lamborghini Centenario - the only one in the UK - stealing the spotlight. Built to celebrate Ferruccio Lamborghini's 100th birthday, only 40 of these were ever made. Further on, as part of the Mercedes-Benz celebrations, we were treated to a stunning display of SL models marking 70 years since the introduction of the 300SL. Highlights included a racing-spec 300SL Gullwing, an elegant 300SL Roadster and a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren with just 3,200 miles on the clock. Advertisement It wasn't all about flashy supercars, either. The Wild Cards class celebrated the oddballs and misfits of the car world, with this year's winner being a 1961 Maserati 3500 GT, which spent 50 years in California before making its way to the UK in 2012. Fun fact: it's owned by Coldplay's Guy Berryman. SUMMERTIME? In many ways, the London Concours is the perfect way to kick off the UK's motoring summer. Advertisement If you're feeling a bit of FOMO, don't worry - there's more to come. I recently covered some of the best upcoming events across the country, from CarFest to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. And if you fancy an event similar to the London Concours, the Concours of Elegance will be held at Hampton Court from September 5 to 7.

Chevy's quarter mile sprint test
Graeme Cameron of Rakaia with his orange 1937 Chevrolet Coupe during the Ashburton Car Club's standing quarter mile sprint on Blands Rd. PHOTO: TONI WILLIAMS A 1937 Chevrolet Coupe lines up next to Fords, Holdens and Toyotas on a closed section of rural road. It cuts a striking figure among modern, faster machines. It's the start line of the Ashburton Car Club's standing quarter mile sprint on Blands Rd; an annual timed event over 400m. Fastest time wins. The 1937 Chevy Coupe has a 253 Holden V8 under the hood with 4200cc. PHOTO: TONI WILLIAMS The orange Chevy stands out in colour, style and era. Driver, Graeme Cameron of Rakaia, is not fazed by the other 16 models which include a Dodge Demon and a Porsche 911. There is also a VW Golf – but more about that later. Cameron has only had his Chevy for two months. It has a 253 Holden V8 under the hood, with 4200cc. It was bought by auction from a Waikato owner when Cameron attended the Whangamata Beach Hop, in the Coromandel Peninsula, in March. It was originally restored by mechanic Phil Hands of Ashburton, Cameron said. And now it had returned to Mid Canterbury. Cameron said he had owned a similar model but sold it about five years ago. He always regretted it. There were 26 hot rods in the auction, he said. ''I had a look, put in a bid, and the rest is history.'' It has 35,000km on the clock; just over 1000km were added driving it home. It was a 16-hour journey and cost Cameron $350 in fuel. Now at its new home, it will be a hobby car. Cameron also has a 2004 Holden Commodore SS, and a 1968 Vauxhall Viva GT racing car which he runs at Levels in Timaru and Ruapuna in Christchurch. He knows speed. Cars during the Ashburton Car Club's recent standing quarter mile sprint on Blands Rd return en masse to the start line. PHOTO: TONI WILLIAMS Cameron estimates the Chevy could have a top speed of 180 – 200km/h. But he did not have time to check the speedometre during his three runs. He saved his best run till last. His standing quarter mile time was 17.048seconds. The winning run was by Marco Verscoot driving a … you guessed it – that VW Golf. He did it in a time of 10.639seconds in his first run of the day. His first three runs were all under 11 seconds. In second place was Ross Forsyth driving a Nissan GTR with a time of 11.025, and third was Bruce Williams in a Porsche 911 in 11.585 seconds.
