Libya Will Not Serve as Europe's Border Guard
Libya will not serve as Europe's border guard, declared Youssef Al-Agouri, Chair of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee in Libya's House of Representatives. He made the statement during a farewell meeting in Benghazi with French Ambassador Mostafa Mihraje, who is concluding his diplomatic mission in the country. Al-Agouri stressed that Libya's sovereignty must be fully respected in any migration-related cooperation. He reiterated that Libya cannot host Europe's migration burden and will not act as a buffer zone to prevent the flow of migrants into European territories. During the meeting, Al-Agouri thanked the outgoing French ambassador for his efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation. He praised France's role in supporting political dialogue and engaging constructively with Libyan institutions during a critical phase in the country's transition. The two sides also discussed the formation of a unified Libyan government, human rights issues, municipal elections, and the controversial maritime agreement between Libya and Turkey. Al-Agouri highlighted the need for France to continue supporting Libya's stability through active coordination with local authorities. The Libyan MP underlined the challenges created by ongoing political division, which he said has negatively affected human rights protection. He also affirmed the parliament's commitment to advancing the rights file, despite structural obstacles. On the migration issue, Al-Agouri emphasised Libya's humanitarian stance towards Sudanese refugees, stating they are treated equally to Libyan citizens. However, he warned against any EU strategies that turn Libya into a detention zone for irregular migrants. Ambassador Mihraje expressed gratitude for the cooperation received from the Libyan parliament and stressed the strategic importance of Libya to France. He wished the country peace and long-term stability.

House of Representatives rejects Libya's inclusion on US travel ban list
The Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) issued a statement expressing its deep regret and dismay over the decision by the US President to include Libya on the list of countries whose citizens are banned from traveling to the US. The committee stressed that this decision lacks objective grounds and disregards the significant sacrifices made by the Libyan state and armed forces in confronting terrorist groups that were active in Libya and posed a threat to regional and international security, according to the statement. The committee highlighted the considerable efforts exerted by Libyan security agencies to stabilize the country, noting that the international community intervened in Libya in 2011 and then withdrew, leaving the country in chaos — making it unfair to place sole responsibility on Libya. The committee warned of the potential impact of the US decision on economic relations between the two countries, especially as Libya is in a reconstruction phase and is working to attract investors and experts across various fields. The statement called for a reconsideration of the US decision, while stressing the need for reciprocal treatment of US citizens in Libya, in order to safeguard mutual interests and the future of bilateral relations. Libyan Parliament Urges Reciprocal Measures After US Travel Ban
The Libyan House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee has urged the government to take reciprocal measures against US citizens following Washington's decision to impose a travel ban on Libyan nationals. In an official statement issued from Benghazi on 15 June, the committee expressed deep regret and strong dissatisfaction with the decision by US President Joe Biden to include Libya on the list of countries whose citizens are banned from entering the United States. The committee called on the Libyan government to ensure the protection of Libyan citizens affected by the ban and to safeguard their rights and interests abroad. Describing the move as unjustified and lacking objectivity, the committee noted that the decision overlooks Libya's significant role in fighting terrorism on behalf of the international community. It emphasised that Libyan security forces have made substantial progress in restoring order, with many terrorist groups eliminated through national efforts and sacrifices. The statement also pointed to the long-term consequences of the 2011 international intervention in Libya, arguing that the subsequent withdrawal left the country in chaos. It warned that the US decision risks undermining Libya's reconstruction efforts and could deter foreign investment and expertise at a critical time. Moreover, the committee highlighted the potential negative impact on economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations, warning that the travel ban could lead to a deterioration in bilateral relations. In closing, the committee appealed to the US administration to reconsider its decision, stressing that maintaining cooperation and mutual respect is vital for future partnership and regional stability. Libya & Italy Discuss Joint Agricultural Projects
Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee in Libya's House of Representatives, Youssef Al-Agouri, has launched an official visit to Italy aimed at strengthening international partnerships and encouraging foreign investment in Libya's agricultural sector. Al-Agouri travelled to the city of Rimini, where he took part in the 'Macfrut 2025' exhibition—one of Europe's most prominent trade fairs focused on agriculture and food industries. During the visit, Al-Agouri met with Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut and head of the organising company Cesena Fiera. The two discussed ways to boost cooperation between Libya and Italy in areas such as agriculture and food security. Talks focused on opportunities for Libya to benefit from Italy's advanced expertise in vegetable and fruit farming, seed production technologies, and the establishment of joint agricultural projects that support sustainable development in the North African country. Al-Agouri highlighted Libya's potential as an attractive destination for agricultural investment, emphasising the availability of arable land and the country's strategic location. He invited Italian and other international firms to explore Libya's opportunities and contribute to revitalising its agricultural economy. The visit reflects a broader strategy by the Libyan Parliament to build international partnerships in key sectors. It aims to attract expertise and modern technologies to support national development goals, particularly in food production and rural development. As Libya works towards stability and economic diversification, officials are increasingly looking to global forums and exhibitions like Macfrut to connect with potential investors and technical partners.
