Rape accused should be hanged, says law college vice-principal after GB meeting
1 2 Kolkata: The vice-principal of the law college where a first-year student was gang raped said the perpetrators should be hanged even as the governing body expelled Monojit Mishra and decided to appeal to the bar council for the cancellation of his licence to practice in court. "The rapists should be hanged for committing such a heinous crime on the college premises," Nayna Chatterjee, the vice-principal of the law college said after the governing body meeting on Tuesday. The meeting had been convened following a nudge from the higher education department to discuss issues that have come to the fore in the wake of the incident. The governing body expelled the key accused, Mishra, who was working as a casual staff member at the college since last year. He will also be asked to return the money that he had been paid by the college. Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed — the other two accused — were barred from the campus and won't be able to get admission to any institute in Bengal. The governing body will also appeal to the bar council for the cancellation of Mishra's licence. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has been formed following the Vishakha guidelines. The college had a seven-member sexual harassment cell that was non-functional, but a proper ICC was formed by the governing body on Tuesday. The governing body has terminated the contract with the private security agency and blacklisted it. The college will select a new security service provider, prioritising enhanced surveillance systems, strict personnel verification, and comprehensive security protocols to ensure safety on the college campus. The college will appoint female security staff, too. The governing body president Ashok Deb said: "GB has strongly condemned this incident, and we want all the accused to receive the highest punishment. No one will be spared, and GB members will cooperate with the investigative agency." He also stated that classes would stay suspended until police permission was given to start regular classes, but the office will be functional from Wednesday. Sibranjan Chatterji, the govt nominee and the veteran educationist in the governing body, said: "There were some complaints made against him that were not about molestation, and it was GB's decision, not the individual's." Haripada Banik, teaching staff representative in the governing body, said, There were all types of pressures by Monojit and his associates, and he introduced a threat culture on the campus. Centre approves Vanaz-Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro extensions
Pune: Central govt on Wednesday approved two key Metro line extensions in Pune — Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi — nearly 15 months after state submitted these proposals in March 2024. Both will be elevated corridors, covering a combined distance of 12.8 km and have 13 stations. The routes are expected to be ready for operation within four years of the commencement, officials from the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) said. The estimated project cost is Rs3,624.24 crore and it will be equally shared by Centre, state govt and funding agencies, they said. Maha Metro, the implementing agency, will carry out civil, electro-mechanical, and other works. It has already begun the pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys and designing of stations. Mohol recently held a meeting with Union minister of housing and urban development Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss various Metro proposals in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad pending with Centre for approvals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Need To Kill Time On Your Computer, This Popular Strategy Game Is A Must Forge Of Empires Undo Once operational, these lines will help resolve traffic issues, said deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. Pawar on Wednesday held a meeting in Mumbai to review the progress of various projects in Pune. His office has established a project management unit for continuous monitoring of the projects, including Metro proposals. Metro services are currently running on the Ramwadi-Vanaz stretch. The extensions will connect the city's eastern entry point (Wagholi) and western entry point (Chandni Chowk). The Chandni Chowk extension will cover 1.2 km and have stations at Kothrud Bus Depot and Chandni Chowk. The Wagholi route will have 11 stations spanning over 11.6 km. The stations have been proposed at Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tuljabhavani, Ubalenagar, Kharadi Road, Wagheshwar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharthnagar, Bakori Phata, and Vitthalwadi. Commuters and residents from Nagar Road and Paud Road said the work should begin at the earliest and complete within the stipulated deadline. Officials from Maha Metro said they would mobilise teams to seek necessary permissions required for actual work. These extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, thus increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire line 2 (Wagholi to Chandni Chowk) is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057. Opposition parties, including Congress, expressed strong displeasure over the delay in the approval of these two Metro proposals.

BJP denies alliance talks with SAD, terms it ‘baseless rumour'
Chandigarh: Terming the alliance talks between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal a "baseless rumour spread by the Akali leadership", Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal on Sunday said there were "absolutely no talks or discussions underway for any alliance with any group of the SAD. " Responding to a question on whether there was a need for an SAD-BJP alliance on Saturday, senior SAD leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder first declined to comment, but later said: "Our aim right now is how to strengthen the SAD." He also said the SAD was the only party that could safeguard Punjab's interests. When further asked about any likely alliance with the BJP, especially when the vote percentage of both parties increases when they come together, Bhunder said: "The elections are not contested keeping in mind the percentage (of votes), but on principles." Bhunder further said the alliance could be considered if the BJP-led Centre addressed issues related to Punjab – the water dispute, Sikh prisoners, industry, opening the borders, and recruitment in the Army. The Akali leader dismissed the notion that the SAD could be a junior partner if an alliance took shape, saying: "We will remain big brother." Baliawal, in a written statement on Sunday, said: "The BJP consistently performed impressively in Punjab — from the 2022 state elections to the remarkable rise in our vote share during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Need To Kill Time On Your Computer, This Popular Strategy Game Is A Must Forge Of Empires Undo We further strengthened our position in the municipal corporation elections and delivered a strong performance in the recent byelection." "Given this clear and consistent upward trajectory, there is no question of entering into any alliance with any faction of the Akali Dal," he added. Earlier, Baliawal released a video in which he said a "rumour was being spread since yesterday by Akali leaders which suggested that we (BJP) are having talks with them (Akali Dal)." Neither Punjab BJP nor the party's central leadership was having any alliance talks with any group of the Akali Dal, he said. "There is a clear message that the BJP will contest the 2027 (Punjab) elections on its own. Sikander Singh Maluka returned to the SAD fold yesterday, and Bhunder Sahib made a statement triggering these talks, but we outrightly reject it," the BJP spokesperson added. Asserting that the BJP performed well contesting on its own in the 2022 Punjab elections, 2024 parliamentary polls, municipal corporation elections, and the byelections, Baliawal said: "We are reaching out to the villages. Our mass base is on the rise, not only in villages, but BJP is also getting strong in cities. We are contesting the Ludhiana (West) bypoll strongly, and we are hopeful we will win this seat. We will contest the 2027 Punjab elections on our own and will form the govt. " MSID:: 121863748 413 |

Rati Agnihotri's son Tanuj Virwani talks about pressures of proving himself in the industry: 'For my mother, they would meet me, but...'
Tanuj Virwani, son of Rati Agnihotri, navigates Bollywood with determination, acknowledging his mother's influence opened doors but securing roles depended on his talent. He values her advice on emotional resilience, crucial for handling the industry's highs and lows. Off-screen, Tanuj prioritizes family, balancing his career with his roles as a husband and father. Tanuj Virwani , son of iconic Bollywood actress Rati Agnihotri , may come from a celebrated film legacy, but his journey in the industry has been one of quiet determination and personal grit. Currently in the spotlight for his role in Rana Naidu 2, Tanuj has opened up about the challenges of carving his own path, the pressure of living up to his mother's name, and the life lessons that have kept him grounded—both on and off screen. In an interview with Bollywood Shaadis, he acknowledged that being a star kid gave him access to people in the industry, but clarified that it never guaranteed work. Tanuj explained that while some were willing to meet him out of respect for his mother, landing roles still depended entirely on his own talent and hard work. He also noted that the nepotism debate wasn't as prominent when he started out, unlike the buzz that followed the Kangana Ranaut-Karan Johar controversy years later. Tanuj further revealed that his mother, Rati Agnihotri, has always been both his closest confidante and toughest critic. Despite their shared background in cinema, they rarely discuss films at home. Instead, their conversations focus on personal growth—how to carry oneself, lead by example, and stay grounded. He shared that when he first told her about his decision to pursue acting, she offered him heartfelt but realistic advice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Need To Kill Time On Your Computer, This Popular Strategy Game Is A Must Forge Of Empires Undo Rati emphasized that while the industry may appear glamorous, it comes with its share of struggles—failures, insecurities, rejection, and emotional toll. Her guidance was less about the craft of acting and more about developing the mental strength needed to survive and succeed in such a challenging space. He also shared that one of the most valuable lessons his mother, Rati Agnihotri, taught him—and one he lives by—is to remain grounded during the highs and not be consumed by negativity during the lows. She stressed the importance of emotional balance, reminding him that both extremes can be unhealthy. Off-screen, Tanuj is also a devoted family man, known for being a loving husband and a doting father.
