Tony Gollan filly Formula Rossa makes late winter carnival return in Bruce McLachlan Classic QTIS 2YO Handicap at Sunshine Coast

Formula Rossa was beaten out of sight when last seen in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic, but Tony Gollan is looking forward to her return on Saturday as he eyes her off as a potential summer carnival contender. The two-year-old filly didn't beat a runner home in the Magic Millions in January when she finished almost 19 lengths off the winner O'Ole in the $3m scamper. Gollan believes she is far better than that and had simply come to the end of her campaign, opting to give filly who cost $340,000 as a yearling a long break rather than bring her back for prime-time winter carnival action. She will be back at the races for the last meeting of the winter carnival when resuming in the Bruce McLachlan Classic QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. There has been some betting support and she is a $10 chance to resume a winner. 'I'm happy with her, she has run well at this track and trip before,' Gollan said. 'She had just come to the end of Christmas campaign in the Magic Millions. 'So I just gave her a good break, I wasn't interested in the early part of the winter with her as I just wanted to take my time with her. 'This is the right sort of time to kick her off. 'She is a nice enough filly, she is still furnishing. 'I think she will have a light sort of preparation this time, with a view towards the summer carnival.' Gollan will also have fast filly Lucky Lass ($15) in the same race and said her racing pattern could be her best attribute. The champion trainer has a big team of runners on the Sunshine Coast, including Felix The Scat who is a $15 chance in the $300,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m). Felix The Scat went for home and looked the winner in the Ipswich Cup, only to be nabbed in the final strides by roughie Flash Aah who will also now contest the Caloundra Cup. 'He probably got there a bit early the other day and he just sort of waited for that other horse to get to him,' Gollan said. 'But I thought his run was easily as good as the other two placegetters. 'It's just a matter of whether that is the right form or whether there is other form that is the right form. 'But Felix is probably at the top of his powers this weekend.' Meanwhile, punters who know Gollan has a happy habit of getting the best out of new acquisitions to his stable should keep a watch on Sunset Dreaming who is a $19 chance in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m). The former Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained mare will be having her second run for Gollan, having finished sixth behind Kin in the Gai Waterhouse Classic where she was beaten just over two lengths. 'I haven't had her long, but I do like her and I think she has made good headway,' Gollan said. 'She was really good in the Gai Waterhouse Classic and she should be better this weekend. 'The 1400 (m) will suit her better but the only negative is that this is a better race. 'She is a knockabout chance with a light weight on her back. 'I would love to see what she does in the next 12 months, she is destined to win Stakes races.'

The Walt Disney Company announced that it is expanding its global theme park empire with a resort coming to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, blending the studio's storytelling with the culture and architecture of the Middle East. Why It Matters The new resort, to be developed in partnership with UAE-based leisure and entertainment company Miral, marks Disney's seventh global destination and its first in the region. The move reflects the company's broader international growth strategy and aims to attract visitors from some of the world's most populous and tourism-ready regions. According to Disney, the site lies within a four-hour flight of one-third of the planet's population, making it uniquely positioned as a future tourism hub. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, echoed the importance of the park's setting during an appearance on Good Morning America. "The UAE and Abu Dhabi is a crossroads of the world," Iger said. "This is a hub in many respects but also, because it is located where it is, it's accessible to so many different regions, places where we typically have only scratched the surface in terms of attendance to our parks." Iger also said the park would feature a modern castle, Disney's first of its kind. "We haven't decided everything that will go into it, but we do know it will be anchored by a castle," he said. "It will be the first real modern castle that we built." Disney's Experiences segment, which includes all its global parks, generated $2.5 billion in operating income for the most recent quarter, according to Forbes. What People Are Saying H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of Miral, on Good Morning America: "We're going to make sure that what we build here in Abu Dhabi is going to be special and it's going to create everlasting smiles and memories for every visitor to come here." Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, on Good Morning America: "We've decided that we want to build a very modern Disneyland. It will obviously incorporate a lot of our intellectual property and some of the typical stories that we tell in our theme parks." Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, in a statement: "Our resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio. The location of our park is incredibly unique – anchored by a beautiful waterfront – which will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways." What's Next No opening date has been confirmed. However, Mubarak said Miral plans to bring the project to life "as fast as possible" without compromising quality. Do you have a story that Newsweek should be covering? Six Flags Magic Mountain's record-setting Superman coaster will fly no more

Six Flags Magic Mountain's "Superman: Escape from Krypton," once among the fastest and tallest roller coasters in the world, has taken its final flight. The ride, which shut down for maintenance last September, will be closed permanently, park officials told the Orange County Register. The theme park did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Times Friday. Originally named "Superman: The Escape," the roller coaster set speed and height records when it debuted in 1997 — hurtling riders upward at a top speed of 100 mph before sending them back down on a near-vertical 415-foot plummet where they experienced 6.5 seconds of weightlessness, according to theme park's website. In 2011, the coaster was redubbed "Superman: Escape from Krypton" and redesigned to run the terrifyingly exhilarating trip backward. "You're about to shoot from 0 to 100 miles per hour in seven seconds flat — in reverse," the Six Flags' website described the ride. "This record-breaking speed and acceleration has never before been achieved in a thrill ride, let alone backwards." Magic Mountain president Jeff Harris told the O.C. Register that the park had initially hoped to reopen the ride, but sourcing replacement parts for the aging roller coaster had proved cost prohibitive. "Just like other roller coasters within the theme park industry, there's a life cycle with these coasters," Harris told the Register. "It's just reached a point in time where we need to make a wise decision on where we really should reinvest funds that improve the guest experience the most. It just doesn't make a lot of sense from a business perspective to put it back into Superman." " Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom" a ride that is attached to the Superman ride and hoists park visitors 40 stories into the air before dropping them back to earth, is currently undergoing maintenance and scheduled to reopen in April, Harris said. The end of the line for Superman was met with an outpouring of grief from adrenaline junkies. "That saying they have about parents and their children applies here: 'You never know when it will be the last time you'll be able to hold your child in your arms,'" one user wrote on Reddit. "Same goes for these rides when they go into refurbishment and the same for Superman. I loved Superman ... I never knew the last time I rode it would be the last time ever." While the extreme ride had a strong fan base, it also experienced technical challenges and several extended periods of closure. Some of these were related to the linear synchronous motor launch system that allowed the ride to reach 100 mph. Currently, the fastest roller coaster in the world is the Formula Rossa at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2010 and boasts a top speed of 149.1 mph. Six Flags Magic Mountain is now down to 19 roller coasters, but the Valencia theme park has a new suspended motorbike coaster ride slated to open in 2026.
