‘Stop undervaluing our food.' New Fairfax restaurant showcases Afro-Caribbean fine dining

At one of the city's most anticipated new restaurants, diners feast on Wagyu-stuffed Jamaican patties and saltfish-and-fig croquettes while seated in sculptural, shell-like booths. A showstopping flower-like art installation crowns the bar at the center of the modern Afro-Caribbean restaurant. Jerk-spiced tomahawk steaks and sorrel-dusted plantains make their way out to the tables while a DJ spins music late into the night. Lucia wants to take island flavors — and Fairfax— to new heights. 'I knew how diverse and how flavorful and how impactful this cuisine could be if executed in this modern way that Adrian [Forte] has taken it to,' said owner Sam Jordan. 'It came from a love of the food and an opportunity to do something different in L.A.' In chef Forte's Guyanese-style oxtail pepper pot — a dish that takes three days to make — the meat is coated in a house-ground spice blend and smoked over Jamaican pimento wood, then braised and served with a sauce reduced with cassareep. The tender fried chicken is brined in coconut milk and dabbed with fermented chili aioli. Pepper shrimp toast, a nod to Jamaica's cultural melting pot, blends the ubiquitous fermented-pepper shrimp street food with the fried Chinese classic. 'I truly believe that our culture needs something like this,' Forte said. 'Other cultures have all these different restaurants that are doing [their cuisines] at a high level and teaching cooks how to make this food. But we don't have that in our culture, so that was very important for me, and very purposeful.' A large reason for this, he said, is value perception. Why might some diners pay $40 or $50 for a bowl of pasta but not the oxtails that take three days to make? Caribbean cuisine, he said, can and should exist across a range of price points. 'I was very adamant about wanting to do this project ... mainly just for the culture so they can see that it's possible, and they could see the perceived value, and we could stop undervaluing ourselves and our food,' he said. Another reason Forte believes Caribbean cuisine isn't often attempted in fine dining is accessibility of ingredients. Multiple chefs of L.A. Caribbean restaurants told Forte they couldn't find the fresh leafy greens required to make callaloo, and thus ordered it canned. But Forte noticed that many Southern California farmers use sweet potato and taro leaves as compost or as feed for livestock; now he buys it fresh from the farmers and serves it as creamed callaloo with grilled snapper and a coconut butter sauce. When hunting for sorrel, he heads to Latin markets for hibiscus. When looking for boniato, or Caribbean sweet potato, he easily finds Japanese sweet potato. He purchases plantains from a Vietnamese grocer. 'I'm not necessarily missing any specific ingredients,' Forte said, 'because of the interconnectedness of what we do as a whole. The diaspora is so vast, and we have all these synergies with different cultures that people don't even realize.' Late-night service focuses on his small bites and the drinks overseen by beverage director Melina Meza (formerly of Level8, Boujis Group), which include an okra martini, a tamarind Collins and an oxtail old-fashioned. But Forte is also planning a new, Caribbean-inspired raw bar program, which he also expects to serve late into the evening. The Jamaica-born chef has deep culinary roots; his parents met at their own parents' shared restaurant. Forte spent years of his childhood and adolescence in their kitchens, and when his father immigrated to Canada, Forte spent years traveling between, dining and cooking in both countries. He participated in season eight of 'Top Chef Canada' — as the series' first Black contestant — and helped launch multiple restaurants there. When he met Jordan, Forte was working as a private chef in Jamaica. But Jordan's vision for Lucia lured the chef and 'Yawd' cookbook author to Los Angeles. After years spent investing in other people's restaurants in L.A. and the Bay Area, California-born Jordan wanted to build a business of his own and drew on his travels in the Caribbean to do it. When Jordan moved to L.A. in 2016 he found a bustling Fairfax filled with art, street style and tastemakers. The pandemic closed multiple storefronts along the iconic stretch, but the restaurateur hopes that Lucia — which opened in the former Black Star Burger space — can help spur revitalization on the street. He and design firm Preen pulled from the Caribbean's flora and fauna for the interior, calling on artist Guerin Swing to hand-cast the rows of 'shell booths' and the towering, flower-like bar sculpture from concrete. 'The whole place is like a show,' Jordan said. 'When you look around you see the big flowers in the center, you see the shell booths; the back dining room area is beautiful with the mirrors, everything. A big part of the food and the cultures that inspire our restaurant is the idea that we're not we're not trying to rush anyone out. We want people to get comfortable, to order food, order drinks, hang out, listen to the music. It's really like a whole immersive experience.' Lucia is open Wednesday to Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight at 351 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, (213) 800-0048,

Rep says Gardai assaulted 'daily' after lucky escape from meat cleaver attack

Gardaí are being assaulted on a 'daily basis', a representative has said amid a terrifying meat cleaver attack on an officer in Co Roscommon. The Irish Mirror reported on Wednesday how brave Garda Gary Murphy told how he was lucky to escape with his life when drug dealer Gerard Forte struck him with a meat cleaver as he searched his house in an incident in December 2023. The shocking facts of the case were unveiled for the first time during a court hearing on Tuesday - in which Garda Murphy spoke about his belief that Forte was trying to kill him that night. And speaking as Forte was remanded into custody, the Garda Representative Association's (GRA) Eoin Browne commended the bravery of Garda Murphy and his colleague Garda Michael Fox, who were attacked that day - as he highlighted the wider issues of officers being attacked almost every day. Garda Browne, who represents the Roscommon and Longford divisions of the GRA told us: 'Two Gardaí, while conducting a search during the course of their duty, were violently assaulted and both members were lucky to escape with their lives. 'We have one member (Garda Michael Fox) still out sick as a result of undergoing constant medical treatment. Another member gave a very impactful victim impact statement where he was attacked with a meat cleaver with his back turned and only for the grace of God, he could have been killed. 'It very easily could have been a lethal situation,' he said. Garda Browne said the incident highlights the all-too-common events where officers in the region are putting their lives on the line. 'I just want to highlight the fact that these assaults on Gardaí are going on on a daily basis and are not just confined to the bigger urban areas. 'Towns like Roscommon have violent criminals as well and we just need to highlight the manpower issues in two counties where there's just such a shortage of Gardaí and this has been going on now a number of years,' he said. His comments come as Garda Gary Murphy told a hearing of Roscommon Circuit Court that he had no doubt that Gerard Forte, 29, of Castlepark, Co Roscommon, 'tried to fatally injure me' when he swung the weapon at him after officers with a warrant had to forcibly enter their way into his home on December 27, 2023. Forte, 29, pleaded guilty to assaulting both Garda Murphy and his colleague Garda Michael Fox - as well as producing a knife - namely a 'meat cleaver'. Forte, who the court heard already has a conviction for sale and supply of drugs and threatening and abusive behaviour, also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis for the purpose of sale or supply on that same date. The court heard that Garda Murphy was saved by Garda Fox, who struggled with Forte on the floor and couch of his home before managing to restrain him with handcuffs. The drugs unit officers had made their way into the home, repeatedly shouting 'Gardaí', the court heard, as they executed a warrant to search his home on the suspicion that he was supplying drugs in Roscommon town. In a powerful victim impact statement read out in court, Garda Murphy, who has had to undergo physiotherapy and has ongoing issues due to the incident, said he feels he is lucky not to have been killed by Forte on that night. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week 'The phrase injured 'on Duty' or 'in the line of Duty' cannot ever be justified or comprehended when a Garda is brutally attacked,' he told the court. "My attack on the 27th of December 2023 could easily have been fatal. "The actions of Gerard Forte could easily have caused me to be remembered as a number on the wall of Templemore.' The Garda said his loved ones could all have ended up 'mourning the loss of another Garda member killed in the line of duty'. 'It seems somewhat unfair for only me to give a victim impact statement because the reality is, is that this attack affects many, many more people than just me,' Garda Murphy told the court. 'The fear that I may be attacked again, is our reality. The fear that next time, I won't be so lucky, is our reality. 'My tour of duty the evening of the 27th of December 2023, I have no doubt in my mind could have been my last,' he added. 'I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Gerard Forte tried to fatally injure me. "His actions on the night, coming to the window looking out, knowing who was at the door, his only thought was to return to his bedroom, find the biggest knife he had and attempt to strike me on the back of the head when my back was turned.' Garda Murphy said Forte's actions were 'all the thoughts of a person that was trying to strike a fatal blow'. He told the court that when the struggle continued into the sitting room, Forte was again trying to strike his colleague Garda Fox with the same knife. 'I believe there was only one thing on his mind. Only for the quick actions of Garda Michael Fox, I would not be here today, that's my reality,' Garda Murphy told the court. He received a laceration to his left shoulder from the strike of the knife, he said - and his clothing was cut through from the impact of the blade. He believed that he now had an 'irreversible rotator cuff injury' to his shoulder and injuries he would continue needing treatment for. The court also heard that Garda Michael Fox was still off duty due to injuries he had received in the incident. Garda Murphy said the incident will stay with him forever. 'To believe how close I came to death will stay with me forever,' he told the court. He said he found it 'extremely difficult to return to front line policing' but he did so to 'save myself'. 'I have dedicated the past two and half years of my service and life to the Divisional Drugs Unit in an attempt to reduce the amount of controlled drugs in the Counties of Roscommon and Longford,' he added. "This night of the 27th of December 2023 has not only made me question working within such a unit but also working within An Garda Síochána as an organisation at all. 'There is no way this would be the "norm", in any other public sector job. If someone walked into a Hospital and attacked a Nurse or a Doctor, the country would be rightly up in arms. However, the reality is, is that this is happening to Garda members every day of the week,' he said. 'Garda members are getting attacked 'in the line of duty' daily. Ordinary people, like me, take on the career of Members of An Garda Síochána, protecting and serving the communities of Ireland. If Garda members are being attacked, how can anyone feel safe? 'However, Gardaí are every day, even now, working to protect the people and to detect and prevent crime, it's what we do,' he said. Garda Murphy said the attack affects the wider community and the residents of Roscommon town. He said it occurred when he executed a search warrant - because "I believed that Gerard Forte was involved in the sale and supply of controlled drugs in Roscommon Town". 'I was fully justified in my belief,' he told the court. 'There is no way he can be justified in his." 'Gerard Forte, has never offered an apology for his actions, if he does today, it is solely as a mitigating factor. His demeanour towards the Garda Staff and Gardaí when he signs on bail, can only be described as repulsive,' he continued. 'A clear message must be sent out that such attacks on Garda members is not acceptable, and cannot be tolerated. '90 names on the walls of Templemore is too many, today, I feel like the lucky one.'

Bears All-Quarter Century Team: Running backs

Twenty-five years of Chicago Bears football are in the books since the turn of the century. Since the calendar turned over to 2000, the Bears have seen some success, but also plenty of woeful stretches. Early on, Chicago became a defensive force, claiming four division titles and reaching only their second Super Bowl in franchise history from 2000 to 2010. Since then, however, a 14-year playoff victory drought that is still ongoing and a one-sided fight with their rival Green Bay Packers have taken the spotlight. For all the ups and downs the Bears have seen, however, they had plenty of talent over the years across offense and defense. Multiple former Bears players are already in the Hall of Fame, while many more provided years of incredible play in the navy and orange. Here at Bears Wire, we're celebrating the best Bears players at each position over the last 25 years. We're going position by position to name the Bears' All-Quarter Century Team for those who played from 2000 through 2024. Next up are running backs, a position where Chicago has notably found some gems from the NFL draft to free agency. Matt Forte The Bears have a long list of legendary running backs -- led by Hall of Famers Walter Payton and Gale Sayers -- and Matt Forte will still go down as one of the franchise's best. Forte's name is well represented in the Bears' record books -- although it's hard to surpass the legendary Payton -- as he spent eight of 10 seasons in Chicago. Forte ranks second in team history with 8,602 rushing yards, 12,718 net yards, 487 receptions, 24 100-yard rushing games and five 1,000-yard rushing seasons -- trailing only Payton. He's also a two-time Pro Bowler (2011, 2013), was named to the Pro Football Writers of America's All-Rookie Team (2008) and landed on the 100 greatest Bears of All-Time list (34th). At the time, Forte broke the Bears' single-season rookie rushing record in 2008 with 1,238 yards, which was later broken by Jordan Howard (also on this list) in 2016. While Forte didn't possess breakaway speed, he was a true dual-threat weapon for the Bears, thriving both as a rusher and a receiver. In fact, he's one of just three players to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season in NFL history. Forte was also the first player in NFL history with 900 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards in each of his first four seasons. While he wasn't considered a true bonafide star running back, there was no player more important to his team's offense than Forte. So it was only fitting that, even after two seasons with the New York Jets, Forte retired a Bear. Thomas Jones While Thomas Jones was only in Chicago for three seasons, he made a lasting impression and proved to be one of the franchise's better free-agent signings at the time. Jones amassed nearly 3,500 rushing yards in just three seasons, including back-to-back years where he eclipsed 1,200 rushing yards -- the first to accomplish the feat since Payton in 1985-86. Jones had to share the backfield with Cedric Benson, who was drafted fourth overall in 2005. But, thanks to Benson's rookie holdout, Jones proceeded to have his second-best ever statistical season with 1,335 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Jones played an integral role in the success of Chicago's offense during their Super Bowl run in 2006, where he rushed for 1,210 rushing yards and six touchdowns. During the 2006 postseason, Jones was the second-leading rusher with 301 yards, including 5.5 yards per carry, and four touchdowns in three games. Ultimately, the Bears traded Jones to the Jets in 2007, as they opted to ride with Benson, which wound up being the wrong decision (although Benson went on to be productive with the Cincinnati Bengals). But despite his short stint, Jones is still remembered as yet another productive and impactful running back in Chicago. Jordan Howard The Bears found a diamond in the rough with Jordan Howard, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Like Jones, he spent just three seasons in Chicago before being traded away, but he proved to be a vital contributor on offense during his short stint. Howard rushed for 3,370 yards, which ranks seventh on the Bears' all-time rushing list, and 24 touchdowns averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Howard's first two seasons in Chicago were special, where he set several records along the way. Howard set a Bears rookie rushing record with 1,313 yards, which also ranked second in the NFL in 2016. He was also the team's first rookie running back selected to the Pro Bowl since Gale Sayers in 1965. Howard followed up his impressive rookie season with 1,122 rushing yards and a career-high nine touchdowns, becoming the first Bears running back in history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first two NFL seasons. He also made history surpassing Hall of Famers Payton (26) and Sayers (28) as the fastest Bears player to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in just 24 games. While Howard had a promising start to his Bears career, he didn't fit into head coach Matt Nagy's offensive scheme, which led to Chicago trading Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2020 sixth-round pick. The Bears went on to draft David Montgomery in the third round just a month later, and he just so happened to make our list as an honorable mention. Honorable mention: David Montgomery FB Jason McKie Every running back's best friend is their fullback, and Jason McKie is easily the best fullback the Bears have had this century so far. McKie spent seven seasons with Chicago (2003-09), where he proved to be an integral part to the Bears' rushing attack. In 2006, McKie became the full-time starter at fullback after replacing Bryan Johnson, who landed on injured reserve, and in turn helped Thomas Jones rush for 1,210 yards during Chicago's Super Bowl run. Before the end of the season, McKie earned a well-deserved five-year contract extension. McKie also played a key role in Matt Forte's record-breaking rookie season in 2008, where Forte had a franchise-best 1,238 rushing yards, which was later broken by Jordan Howard in 2016. During his Bears tenure, McKie thrived as a blocker and was even utilized in goal-line situations. Ultimately, McKie was released by Chicago in March 2010, following the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Bears All-Quarter Century Team Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
