You can buy your own waterfront land at this state-led auction in the Midwest
Have you ever wanted to own an island or waterfront property? Well, pretty soon, you might just be able to in this Great Lakes state. Hundreds of plots of land are soon to be up for sale by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in a series of auctions, with land ranging from a less-than-one-acre island to plots of land hundreds of acres in size. The auctions are hosted annually by the department, local news station Fox 2 Detroit reported. "Before parcels ever get to public auction – a management tool the department has used for several decades – we've already evaluated all other options, whether it's a land exchange for land that's a better fit, or perhaps a situation where it makes more sense for another governmental agency or conservation group to hold the property," Scott Whitcomb, director of DNR's office of public lands, said in a news release. The auctions are on a staggered schedule for bidding. More details on Michigan land auctions: Where does the money go? What type of land is available? The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has a list of locations set to be auctioned. A full list can be found here, but here are some of the highlights: Remote lakefront property Lot #10050: A remote piece of property, this roughly two-acre plot of land is located on the shores of Duck Lake in Gogebic County, part of the state's Upper Peninsula. The parcel includes approximately 100 feet of frontage on the lake, according to the property listing. Bidding for this remote getaway starts at $15,000. 80-acre plot meets zoning requirements to build Lot #10099: If you're looking to build, this property, which meets zoning requirements do so, is better suited than other parcels up for grabs. Listed at 80 acres in Oceana County, bidding starts at $180,000. Mini island starts at $3,750 Lot # 10049: This plot of land, less than an acre in size, offers a peculiar location: the middle of a lake some 3.5 miles northwest of Fenton, Michigan. For any prospective buyer, the land is too small to legally build on, but bidding starts at $3,750. Note: land plot does not appear in the Google Maps embed below. Riverfront parcel listed at $55,000 Lot #10076: A plot more than 14 acres in size, this lot is placed alongside the Thunder Bay River, with riverfront property up for grabs. Located in Montmorency County in Northeast Michigan, bidding for this property starts at $55,000. 700 feet of lakefront property Lot #10080: Bidding for this parcel along John Ford Lake in Newaygo County starts at $42,000. Michigan DNR says roughly 10 of the property's 18 acres are under the lake, with no legal access road. When are auctions for Michigan land open? According to the state DNR, the first auctions are set to begin Aug. 1, with land in Kent and Oceana counties opening the bidding. Michigan thieves target Dodge Ram dashboard touchscreens — how this 30-second crime could impact all drivers
Police in St. Claire Shores, Michigan, are warning drivers following a string of thefts of dashboard screens from select Dodge Ram trucks — a crime they say takes 30 seconds to pull off. 'It only takes a couple of screws to get the touchscreen out,' Det. Ben Leitch told Fox 2 Detroit in a story published April 7. He investigated 16 thefts in the previous two months. I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 5 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how Nervous about the stock market in 2025? Find out how you can access this $1B private real estate fund (with as little as $10) 'This is definitely a crime that probably could be stopped if the manufacturer changed some security features,' Leitch noted. So, who is affected by these thefts, and what can drivers do to protect themselves? According to the local broadcaster, thieves are targeting touchscreens from Dodge Ram trucks manufactured between 2021 and 2025. One victim, identified as Dave, says his truck was parked in his driveway when the theft occurred. It had been two weeks and he was still waiting for a replacement screen. 'It's still not fixed, so we're waiting for parts, I guess,' he told Fox 2 Detroit. 'When I get it fixed, [do] I have to worry about it getting swiped again?' He added: 'I've never stolen from anybody and they do this. That's what hurts.' Read more: This hedge fund legend warns US stock market will crash a stunning 80% — claims 'Armageddon' is coming. Don't believe him? He earned 4,144% during COVID. Here's 3 ways to protect yourself Police urge drivers to park their vehicles in a garage if possible, beef up home security and report any incidents, per the broadcaster. Dave had a message for the criminals who broke into his truck. 'You're lowlife idiots, losers,' he said. 'Get a job.' Those with comprehensive auto insurance should be able to file a claim for the type of theft described above and receive a full reimbursement after paying the deductible. But for those without a comprehensive policy, theft generally isn't covered, and you could be forced to pay for any repairs and replacements out of pocket. Be sure to read over the details of your policy. Beyond the direct cost of repairs after a theft, increased thefts on certain Dodge Ram trucks could lead to indirect costs for owners. Specifically, car insurance companies might consider it riskier to insure Dodge Ram trucks due to the break-ins, which could lead to a spike in premiums. Hopefully, if it could be easily fixed by the manufacturer, as Leitch suggested, a solution will be implemented. Drivers who face a hike in premiums, regardless of vehicle, may want to consider shopping around and potentially switch insurance companies if a better rate is found. Additionally, don't forget to look for discounts. For example, you might tap into savings for having a safe driving record or bundling your home and auto coverage. Sada Baby Arrested on Drug Charges
Detroit rapper Sada Baby has been arrested on drug charges stemming from a traffic stop that occurred several months ago, The Detroit News reports. The rapper, real name Casada Sorrell, is being held in Macomb County Jail after being taken into custody Tuesday night, April 8, on a warrant accusing him of possession of less than 25 grams of narcotics. Court records show he has not yet been arraigned, nor has a hearing been scheduled. More from Rolling Stone Brittany Broski Says 'I Don't Give a F-ck' to Her Haters. You Could Be Next Garbage Sing 'There's No Future in Optimism,' Prove Otherwise in Lyrics A lawyer for Sorrell did not immediately return Rolling Stone's request for comment. Sorrell was originally arrested in January during a traffic stop. At the time, police pulled him over at around 4 a.m. because of his tinted windows. Upon checking the vehicle's license plate, they learned that Sorrell had an outstanding warrant from 2023 for driving without a valid license. (Last month, Sorrell pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to display a valid license and was ordered to pay a $200 fine.) During the stop, police searched Sorrell's car and said they found 'possible illegal contraband' (via Fox 2 Detroit). That part of the case remained open as police sent the substance away for testing. Sorrell's arrest this week after the test results came back positive for narcotics (based on court records, it appears the substance was allegedly cocaine). Sada Baby rose to prominence in Detroit's rap scene in the late 2010s with successful singles like 'Aktivated' and 'Pressin' with King Von. He enjoyed his biggest year in 2020, dropping his proper debut album, Skuba Sada 2, his popular mixtape Bartier Bounty 2, and scoring a hit single with 'Whole Lotta Choppas,' which got a remix featuring Nicki Minaj. Rolls-Royce Cullinan Rented, Then Used As Bank Robbery Getaway Car
Flashy getaway cars are usually the stuff of movies, but according to a report from Fox 2 Detroit, someone in Michigan paid $1,750 per day to rent a Rolls-Royce Cullinan — and then used the super-luxury SUV in a string of bank robberies, eventually leading police on a chase before abandoning the vehicle. The Rolls-Royce was rented from Dream Luxury Car Rentals in Southfield, Michigan last week for the cost of $1750 per day, according to the local news outlet; shortly after the SUV was rented, a crime spree began, with the Rolls-Royce being used in several robberies at banks in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties. Fox 2 Detroit says police eventually spotted the driver of the Cullinan and began a pursuit, with the suspect eventually ditching the SUV and fleeing on foot. Police are reportedly still searching for the suspect, and the investigation has been turned over to the FBI; the Cullinan has been recovered, but suffered approximately $15,000 in damages... which, on a vehicle like this, probably amounts to a scuffed wheel. But Sam Zahar, owner of Dream Luxury Car Rentals, told Fox 2 Detroit that he only discovered what his Rolls-Royce had been up to when he saw a video from local news of a Cullinan being towed — a Cullinan that Zahar said he immediately recognized as his own. As it turns out, this reportedly is not the first time Zahar has found his vehicles in this type of situation: a couple of months ago, he says, someone rented a car from him and used it to rob a mail truck. Despite this, Zahar seems to have a good attitude about the luck of his business: even though his vehicles have occasionally wound up connected to crimes. 'We put a lot of smiles on peoples faces," a smiling Zahar said to Fox 2 Detroit.
