Now relegated to Ligue 2, Lyon secure Uefa backing for Europe spot if demotion overturned

LYON, June 28 — Lyon have agreed a financial sustainability procedure with UEFA which will allow them to play in Europe next season if they win their appeal against relegation to the French second division, the club said on yesterday. On Tuesday, French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) demoted the club. Lyon, who finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Europa League, said at once they would appeal. On Friday, they said that UEFA was prepared to accept them into continental competition. 'Olympique Lyonnais completed the financial sustainability procedure and signed an agreement with the UEFA Club financial control body,' the club said on their website. 'The club could therefore participate in next season's Europa League, subject to a favourable outcome of the appeal of the DNCG decision.' A source close to the discussions between the club and the governing body of European football added that Lyon would be subject to a 12.5-million-euro ($14.6 million) fine with a suspended amount of 37.5 million euros, to be lifted if the club achieves its financial targets. After the DNCG initially ruled in November that Lyon would be relegated at the the end of the season, UEFA began monitoring the club. On May 5, UEFA fined Lyon 200,000 euros ($234,400) for unpaid bills to other clubs, to employees, and to the tax and social security authorities. After the DNCG ruling confirmed its initial decision, the club said they had met 'all of its demands'. While they were unable to convince the French watchdog, UEFA has ruled Lyon could play in Europe. Lyon will have seven days to appeal from the date they are officially notified of the DNCG's ruling. The club said Friday they had not yet received the notification. — AFP

Sacai Spring 2026 Menswear Collection

This was a deceptively simple Sacai collection. Not least because Chitose Abe stepped away from the runway this season, opting instead for a static presentation of the clothes in this lookbook at the Sacai HQ on the Left Bank. As the T-shirt she was wearing implied, despite how forward-looking or concept-driven her work can present when on the runway, Abe makes everyday clothes. 'All day everyday,' read the slogan printed across her tee. And that's what she made sure to underscore in conversation: That the cornerstone of Sacai is that it is meant to be a wardrobe. Elevated, sure, but there's no reason why these shouldn't be the clothes you wear, well, all the time. Abe explained through her interpreter that the season's starting point was a white cotton cashmere tuxedo, its versatility and simplicity becoming a stand-in for the broader Sacai endeavor. Abe's touch, particularly her signature garment hybridization, has become a source of inspiration for many and it's easy to clock off the runways. This may be why, in recent seasons, her runway collections seemed to have moved into becoming concept-driven and built around a singular theme as opposed to being more broad contributions to her body of work—see the rawness of her disheveled furs from her January men's show or the streamlined, gestural sensuality of the women's one from March. Still Sacai, but presented as more specific, singular statements. What was on display at Abe's showroom this time was, instead, a sharp and clear reminder of the core tenets of Sacai. Was the intention to clean the slate or reset? Not at all, she said, answering the question this time sans translator. It was, instead, just to show this side of the label. Ditto opting out of the runway this season—no broader point being made here other than switching things up. Fair enough. Much of fashion has started to once again opt for thinness, in castings for the runways and in the proportions of clothes, but not Abe. Instead, as exemplified by that very look, the dominant silhouette in this collection was dictated by a wide, ballooning trouser and a voluminous sleeve. In many ways this was a collection about sleeves, each more fascinating than the other. They appeared slashed and open down to the elbows or rounded out entirely; made with extra volumes optionally released by zippers or with double shoulder-caps and bell-like hems; simple and curvaceous or intricately cut and folded in ways too puzzling to describe with mere words. Such technical prowess is hard to see on a runway; it was a joy to be able to experience it up close. Even more fun: After starting the day at the Sacai HQ, the fashion crowd was summoned to end it there too, this time with the promise of Japanese food and karaoke. Some of your favorite fashion editors, publicists, and multi-hyphenates belted out everything from Elvis and George Michael to Japanese pop and even Shakira (this last one may or may not have been yours truly). As a treat, the artist D4vd, who was in attendance as a guest, decided to sing his viral hit 'Here With Me.' The true star of the show, however, was Abe herself. She ended the night with a rendition of 'Empire State of Mind' accompanied by a choir of guests. She was wearing a little Sacai frock, as were many others in the room. Undeniable proof that hers are clothes not just made to live in every day, but to seize every moment

France shooting: Urgent manhunt for three gunmen after explosions and shots heard in Nimes - at least six injured with one person fighting for their life

At least one person has been left fighting for their life and five others have been injured after a shooting in France. The horror attack unfolded at around 7pm on Friday evening in Nimes, near Avignon. Six people were rushed to hospital with bullet wounds and one remains in a serious condition. An investigation for attempted murder has been launched by the French authorities, according to The Mirror. As of the early hours of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made - and it is believed that the suspects are still on the run. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and explosions in the Pissevin district - an area in south-west Nimes which is known for drug crime. One woman told French media: 'My sister called me as I was coming home from work. 'She told me not to go home, there were shots right in front of my building. At first, we thought they were firecrackers...' French authorities said in a statement: 'A shooting took place this evening resulting in several injuries. Investigations are underway.' The country's riot police were called in to help deal with the shooting, it has been reported. The Pissevin district of Nimes has been marked by a series of tragic shootings. In August 2023, a 10-year-old child was killed by a stray bullet, and in February last year another person was killed near a drug dealing point.

Rudy Gobert Reacts to Timberwolves Drafting His Potential Replacement Joan Beringer

Rudy Gobert Reacts to Timberwolves Drafting His Potential Replacement Joan Beringer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves' selection of Joan Beringer could be a harbinger for what's ahead for Rudy Gobert. Advertisement Selected with the 17th overall pick the day before Gobert's 34th birthday, Beringer, an 18-year-old Frenchman, could be the heir apparent to Gobert's place at the heart of the Timberwolves defense. Beringer has a unique blend of size, mobility and has great hands for picking up the game of basketball just four years ago. However, his inexperience and raw talent have made him one of the draft's biggest mysteries. Gobert, who turns 34 on June 26, signed a three-year $110 million extension last year that will keep him under contract through the 2027-28 season. He'll be 36 years old in the final year of that deal. Advertisement While Beringer could be the reason the Timberwolves move on from Gobert one day, he'll play understudy to the four-time Defensive Player of the Year for now. Meanwhile, the elder Frenchman took to X after the Wolves selected Beringer on June 25. Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert (27)Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images Just minutes after Beringer's selection, Gobert posted a series of emojis along prayer hands (or high-fives) and a wolf. Facing questions about Naz Reid, who has a player option in his contract this summer, the Timberwolves gained some security at backup center. In NBC Sports' final mock draft, the outlet argued that Reid's shortcomings on defense could be reason for Beringer to begin seeing playing time as a developmental rim protector. Advertisement Overall, the selection of Beringer will not see its final valuation until years down the line, considering his young age. Timberwolves Intend to Keep Joan Beringer After NBA Draft

Timberwolves Intend to Keep Joan Beringer After NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves backloaded their frontcourt with the selection of 18-year-old French center Joan Beringer in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Advertisement But how does he figure into a loaded Wolves roster that already has sidelined many developing talents outside its nine-man rotation? Beringer is the prototypical draft-and-stash asset, having come over from Europe. He started playing basketball just four years ago and is considered one of the rawest talents in the 2025 draft class after averaging just 4.7 points and 4.6 rebounds for Cedevita Olimpija in the Slovenian First League. Ricky Rubio took to becoming a face of the franchise, playing two years for Barcelona after the Timberwolves drafted him in 2009 before joining the team. However, there are other plans for Beringer. Joan Beringer stands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver after being selected as the 17th pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 NBA Penner-Imagn Images Shortly after the Wolves selected Beringer 17th overall on June 25, insider Dane Moore reported that Beringer "will not be a draft-and-stash, per source. He will be here in Minnesota next season." According to Moore, Beringer will be much closer to the team, which bodes well for the Rudy Gobert succession plan. Advertisement Gobert offered his approval of the move on X after Beringer was selected, and the younger Frenchman also offered his flowers to the four-time Defensive Player of the Year. "Amazing. I'm very happy, also to play with Rudy Gobert. It's an amazing feeling. I'm very happy," Beringer said, per The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski. Beringer could spend time bouncing between the Iowa Wolves and the Timberwolves; however, his development appears to be tantamount to Tim Connelly's plans for the franchise by keeping him in the states on the hip of Gobert.
