Porto Appoints Farioli as New Football Team Manager
Lisbon – Saba: Portuguese club Porto announced on Sunday the appointment of Italian Francesco Farioli as the new manager of the first football team on a two-year contract. Farioli replaces Martin Anselmi, who left Porto earlier in July following the team's elimination from the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Italian coach, formerly in charge of Ajax Amsterdam and Nice, departed the Dutch club last May after missing the chance to secure a 37th league title due to the team's late-season collapse, allowing PSV Eindhoven to clinch the championship in the final round. Farioli led Nice to a fifth-place finish in the 2023-2024 French league and previously managed Turkish clubs Fatih Karagümrük and Alanyaspor. Porto finished third in the Portuguese league last season, nine points behind champions Sporting Lisbon. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

Francesco Farioli appointed Porto head coach
Francesco Farioli has been appointed FC Porto head coach on a two-year contract. The 36-year-old has joined the Portuguese club less than two months after leaving Ajax, whom he coached for one season. The Italian, who guided Ajax to a second-place finish and missed out on the Eredivisie title to PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the campaign, was the first non-Dutch coach at the Amsterdam club since Danish manager Morten Olsen left in 1998. Farioli replaces Martin Anselmi at Porto; the Argentinian won just 10 of his 21 matches in charge, overseeing a third-place finish in Portugal's Primeira Liga and a group stage exit at this summer's Club World Cup. Farioli started his coaching career in Turkey and enjoyed a successful 2023-24 season in charge of French club Nice, where he helped guide the side to fifth in Ligue 1. At Nice and Ajax, he primarily deployed a 4-3-3 formation, in which his side generally pressed high in a man-to-man system, with similarities to Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi's style of play. Porto appoint Farioli as head coach
July 6 (Reuters) - Former Ajax Amsterdam and Nice manager Francesco Farioli has been appointed head coach of Porto on a two-year contract, the Portuguese side said on Sunday. Farioli left Ajax in May after the Dutch side missed out on a record 37th Eredivisie crown following a late season collapse, which allowed PSV Eindhoven to snatch the title on the final day. The Italian led Nice to a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 in the 2023-24 season and has also coached Turkish sides Fatih Karagumruk and Alanyaspor. He replaces Martin Anselmi, who departed Porto earlier this month after their group-stage exit from the Club World Cup. Porto finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, nine points behind champions Sporting.
