Scottish football legend Frank McAvennie has turned his attention to the ladies once more, this time by sponsoring a women's football team. The former St Mirren, Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker's podcast Let Me Be Frank has backed Hamilton Academical WFC with a season long shirt deal. Macca, who hosts the Let Me Be Frank podcast alongside journalist pal Simon Houston, said: 'Anything I can do to help the ladies. "It's no secret that in the past I wasn't the biggest fan of women's football and didn't watch a lot of it, but fair's fair. I have become a convert and I have been massively impressed with some of the games I have watched.' The Accies Women's team are set to play in the top flight next season alongside other SWPL1 clubs after becoming SWPL2 Champions for 2024/25. Frank, 65, said: 'Hamilton did incredibly well last season and now they are back in the top flight and I'm thrilled that our logo will be on their shorts as they go for more glory. 'I knew some of the people who work for charities at Hamilton and have known the men's side for years. I've been going to see them for years. 'It gives the podcast a wee lift as well.' Frank, who was at New Douglas Park this week to meet some of the players and hand over a cheque for £1,000, made a name for himself as a top scorer in both the Scottish top flight and in England. His reputation for scoring stretched to the ladies, prompting comedian and TV producer to lampoon Frank in the television series Only An Excuse with the catchphrase, 'Where's ra burds?' Frank said: 'A lot of my mates are poking fun telling me that I was very much a fan of the ladies back in the day, so I'm expecting a bit of a ribbing. But I can take it. Some of Phil's sketches have been hilarious. It was all good fun. "But in all seriousness, I'm delighted at the massive increase in profile that the women's game has enjoyed, not just in Scotland but all over the world. "I've been watching a lot of the Euros which are on at the moment and it's just a pity the Scottish team didn't make it to Switzerland. Let's hope they can be back on the big stage soon.' Frank, who enjoyed top flight football in the 1980s and 1990s, added: 'It would be great to see some of the Hamilton team showcasing their talents on the world stage. "We will give our podcast followers regular updates on their scores as the new season progresses." Frank has also promised to cheer the Accies women's team from the stands when they play upcoming matches against Partick Thistle and Celtic. He said: 'Women's football has taken off and it has got to a stage where women's games are filling stadiums. 'You have got to be happy with the way they have got the leagues together and the clubs have bought into it. There are some decent players.' Hamilton Academical WFC manager Robert Watson added: "This is a magnificent boost for the team. "We are absolutely delighted to have the Let Me Be Frank podcast sponsoring our shorts for the upcoming season. "This will be one of the biggest seasons in the team's history after returning to the top flight of Scottish women's football. "We couldn't do what we do without the support of people like Frank. We are not full-time so every penny we receive is really important and extremely helpful." The Let Me Be Frank podcast regularly boasts top guests. Past shows have included chats with everybody from Rod Stewart to Ray Winstone. Frank said: 'The podcast is about letting people talk. Every time we have someone in we have a story that we haven't heard. It's great because normally I would ask a question then answer it, but Simon has taught me to keep quiet and let people speak for themselves and it has been a joy to talk to everybody from Scott Brown about his time at Celtic to Rod because you can't get much bigger than that.' Hamilton Accies remain in the dark over transfer embargo as SPFL refuse to offer clarity
The SPFL have declined to comment on Hamilton Accies' ongoing transfer embargo, as the club charges towards the start of the new League One campaign. Accies - who were hit with a transfer embargo at the start of last season after late payments were made to players due to what the club called 'a banking error' - were relegated from the Championship last season after a 15-point deduction was imposed by the SPFL in the final few weeks of the campaign. The club was punished for breaching 'multiple' SPFL rules, including a charge relating to "a failure to notify the SPFL of remuneration defaults in respect of six players and a failure to act with the utmost good faith in its representations to the SPFL regarding the lifting of a transfer embargo after previous remuneration and tax defaults." READ MORE: Albion Rovers boss knows what to expect from Cumbernauld Colts after club raided them for players this summer READ MORE: Football legend Frank McAvennie gets behind women's football team in shirt deal Other charges related to membership criteria and incorrect information regarding stadium ownership, while the club was also fined £9,000. An appeal to the SFA on all charges was kicked out in May. Accies have since moved out of their hometown, leaving New Douglas Park after a fallout with the stadium owners and agreeing a two-year lease at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld to play home matches. But their woes are far from over as the club is still unable to sign players with their League One opener at home to Montrose just over a week away. Under SPFL rules, a transfer embargo is automatically imposed when a club fails to pay its players or taxes on time. Lanarkshire Live Sport contacted the SPFL to determine how long the transfer embargo is in place for, but they declined to comment on Hamilton's situation. Hamilton Accies themselves insist they are in the dark on an exact timeline but Accies boss John Rankin stated last week he hoped the ban would be lifted by this week. Last month, Accies agreed deals in principle to sign defender Ricki Lamie, forward Matty Yates and defender Aaron Comrie but none have come to fruition yet. Lamie featured as a trialist in recent Premier Sports Cup games against Stirling Albion and Hearts, while former Airdrie midfielder Charlie Telfer has also featured as a trialist. On July 16, Rankin said: 'We can't bring any signings in. You've seen trialists in the last two games, we'll see how the situation develops over the next week to 10 days. Hopefully we can get bodies in after that." Accies continue their Premier Sports Cup campaign tonight away to Dunfermline and then host Dumbarton at Broadwood on Saturday.

Celtic hero left ‘starstruck' after meeting golf legend at Turnberry
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT's not every day that Celtic legend Frank McAvennie is left starstruck after meeting a fellow sporting icon. But the former Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker couldn't believe his eyes when he realised he was standing next to one of the all-time golfing greats at Turnberry this week. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Frank McAvennie wit Gary Player at Trump Turnberry McAvennie, 65, shared a picture on social media after he caught up with three-time Masters winner Gary Player on the famous course in Ayrshire. Earlier this year the retired footballer caused a stir on social media when he was pictured with Kylie Minogue during a golf day at Marr Hall. This time he had his fans in awe with his snap with the South African legend who is regarded as one of the best player to have ever lived. Player won 165 professional tournaments over seven decades after turning professional in 1953 at the age of 17. He is only one of six golfers to achieve a career gland slam by winning four majors. Now aged 89, Player enjoyed plenty of success in Scotland as he won two of his three Open Championship titles there. He won the Open Championship at Muirfield in 1959 and at Carnoustie in 1968. Sharing the snap with the golf legend on Instagram, McAvennie wrote: "One of the true legends of golf, Gary Player, down Trump Turnberry Scotland just before teeing off. "Don't get starstruck often, but this guy is a different level and a proper gentleman." Reacting to the post, one fan wrote: "Great photo Macca." Another said: "Brilliant photo Macca." A third commented: "Even heroes have heroes." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
