Red Sox' ‘uber-athletic' 1st-rounder cracks Keith Law's Top 60, along with 2 other prospects
A trio of Red Sox prospects have cracked Keith Law's latest Top 60 rankings of minor leaguers at The Athletic. First-round pitcher Kyson Witherspoon debuted at No. 54 overall, while Jhostynxon Garcia came in at No. 46 and top prospect Franklin Arias is all the way up to No. 9 with Law touting his 'All-Star upside.' Witherspoon is the new face on the list for the Red Sox though. Boston took the 20-year-old from Oklahoma with the 15th pick in this month's MLB draft and signed him for $5 million last weekend. Law loved the selection. 'Witherspoon was the top right-handed pitcher on my draft board this year, as the uber-athletic Oklahoma pitcher held 95+ deep into games and worked with a five-pitch mix that should end up with at least three above-average weapons,' he writes. 'His delivery features an unusual movement after separation where he brings his hand almost straight down, described to me by one evaluator as a 'waggle.' It hasn't inhibited his ability to repeat the delivery or throw strikes. I see at least a mid-rotation starter here, and his athleticism and easy velocity point to the potential for even more.' The radar gun was something that director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson pointed to after selecting Witherspoon as well. 'With Kyson, it's big velocity. And he's held it over a lot of innings with some really good breaking pitches,' Pearson said. 'Whether it's his cutter, slider, a lot of upside there to continue to maximize his mix. But a strike thrower with high velo and interesting secondary shapes.' Red Sox Predicted to Land Star Pitcher at Trade Deadline
Red Sox Predicted to Land Star Pitcher at Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have been one of the more interesting teams across baseball this season. Boston is fighting for a playoff spot, both in the American League East division and within the wild-card race in the AL. Advertisement But as the trade deadline quickly approaches, the Red Sox could be very active. Boston may be looking to bring in another starting pitcher to help bolster the rotation. The Red Sox starters have been a bit up and down, but adding more talent could help things. Boston has some intriguing prospects that they could send out, making a trade potentially more likely. In a new trade idea from Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, the Red Sox add a former All-Star to the pitching rotation. Reuter has Boston land right-hander Sandy Alcántara to bolster the starting pitchers. To BOS: RHP Sandy Alcántara To MIA: SS Franklin Arias (No. 3 BOS prospect, No. 61 on B/R Top 100), OF Jhostynxon Garcia (No. 6 BOS prospect, Next 50 on B/R Top 100), RHP David Sandlin Advertisement "However, the 2022 NL Cy Young winner still represents a potential impact addition to a team's rotation for the playoff push. His 2.74 ERA in 23 innings over his previous four starts looked like a step toward regaining his frontline form. "The 29-year-old has a $17.3 million salary for the 2026 season and a $21 million club option for 2027, so he is more than just a rental. Any return package will need to reflect that remaining control," Reuter wrote. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (13) looks down in the dugout during the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images Alcántara could give this Red Sox rotation a massive jumpstart, even with his inconsistent season. When he's on, Alcántara is one of the better pitchers in the game. Advertisement Injuries have taken up his last few years, but Miami could still sell high on his upside. Alcántara could be the difference between not making the playoffs and Boston being a potential contender this season. Look for the Red Sox to gauge the market before the trade deadline, and a move like this could be coming down the pipeline. Arias homers to lead Drive past Emperors, 7-2
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Greenville Drive) — Franklin Arias homered and drove in two runs while Eduardo Rivera struck out eight over 5 2/3 strong innings as the Greenville Drive rolled past the Rome Emperors 7–2 on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field, taking the six-game series five games to one. A four-run third inning and a three-run sixth provided more than enough offense for the Drive (30–27), who capped off a dominant week and climbed three games over .500. Rome (27–30) was held to just one hit in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Rivera (3–1) turned in another sharp outing, scattering six hits and allowing just one run — a solo homer by E.J. Exposito in the sixth — while striking out eight and walking one. Erik Rivera and Darvin Garcia combined for 3 1/3 innings of relief to close out the win. Arias finished 2-for-5 and launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, part of a three-hit inning that helped Greenville pull away. Yophery Rodriguez added two hits, including a double and a stolen base, while Freili Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The Drive broke open a scoreless tie in the third after Rodriguez and Nelly Taylor reached base to set the table. Antonio Anderson singled, and Nazzan Zanetello followed with an RBI knock to left that plated two. A throwing error by Rome left fielder Jace Grady allowed a third run to score, and Brooks Brannon added a fourth on a fielder's choice that was mishandled by shortstop Lizandro Espinoza. Rome starter Cedric De Grandpre (1–1) took the loss, charged with four runs — three earned — over three innings. He struggled with command, walking three and allowing four hits in his 69-pitch outing. After Exposito's solo shot in the sixth, Greenville responded quickly. Brannon led off the home half with a single, and Encarnacion followed with a double to left. Justin Riemer's sacrifice fly brought home Brannon before Arias connected on a two-run blast down the right-field line off Rome reliever Samuel Strickland to make it 7–1. Exposito, the lone bright spot offensively for Rome, went 3-for-4 and accounted for both runs — adding an RBI single in the eighth. But the rest of the Emperors lineup struggled to solve Greenville's pitching, striking out 12 times. The Drive out-hit Rome 10–7 and took advantage of three defensive errors by the Emperors, two of which led directly to early runs. Greenville finished the series having outscored Rome 33–14 over the six-game stretch. The Drive return to action Tuesday as they hit the road to face the Hudson Valley Renegades for a six-game series. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Franklin Arias of Red Sox is now a Top 10 MLB prospect
The Red Sox are in a free fall. How does this get fixed? The Red Sox are in a free fall. How does this get fixed? The Red Sox are in a free fall. How does this get fixed? It's no surprise Roman Anthony is the top prospect in all of baseball, though the 21-year-old probably won't be a prospect for the Red Sox much longer. But Boston still has another Top 10 prospect in its system, with infielder Franklin Arias climbing up the latest rankings. The 19-year-old shortstop checked in as the No. 8 prospect in Keith Law's newest Top 50, which he published Thursday on The Athletic. Who is Franklin Arias? The Red Sox signed Arias as an International free agent in 2023, and he's been turning heads the last two years as one of the organization's top defensive prospect in the infield. He checks in at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, and is currently playing at Single-A Salem after starting the season at High-A Greenville. Before the season, Arias was Law's No. 42 prospect. But he's caught everyone's attention with both his bat and his glove in 2025. "Through Sunday, Arias was hitting .360/.406/.517 since his promotion to High A, and he's still just 19 until November," wrote Law. "He's a true shortstop, he doesn't punch out (8.3 percent at the higher level), and he has power." Law called Arias "electric on both sides of the ball." "If there's a flaw in his game, pitchers through the High-A level haven't exposed it yet," added Law. In the Boston organization, Arias is the No. 3 prospect behind Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, with the latter currently up with the Big League club. Kristian Campbell, whom Law had as a Top 10 prospect last year, made Boston's Opening Day roster following an impressive spring. "Leave it to the Red Sox to graduate a top-10 prospect (Kristian Campbell) and immediately have someone else replace him," noted Law. Jhostynxon Garcia also cracks Top 50 Prospect list The Red Sox had a third prospect pop up in Law's Top 50: outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia. The man nicknamed "The Password" checked in at No. 46 after he was unranked last season. Law notes that Garcia had a breakout year in 2024 -- when the 22-year-old slashed .286/.356/.536 with 24 doubles and 23 homers for Greenville, Salem, and Double-A Portland -- but adds the outfielder as taken a significant step forward this season. "He's swinging less often, which has also meant that he's whiffing less and he's chasing less, and he's still hitting the ball hard — although the surface results haven't been there yet. The Red Sox bumped him up to Triple A last week and in his first six games there he homered twice, at 106 and 109 mph. It's plus power, a significantly improved approach, and, well, he should move to right field," wrote Law. Garcia is slashing a robust .406/.424/.719 with the WooSox, and is up to three homers in his eight games at Triple-A.

Drive pound Jersey Shore
GREENVILLE, S.C. — The one-two punch of Red Sox Top Prospects was dominate, No. 3 prospect Franklin Arias had four hits and No. 21 prospect Nelly Taylor drove in three runs, and the Greenville Drive used a five-run sixth inning to pull away from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in a 10-4 win Thursday night at Fluor Field. Greenville (22-25) pounded out 14 hits — including home runs from Taylor and Andy Lugo — and capitalized on a pair of Jersey Shore errors to snap a two-game skid. Arias finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Taylor went 2-for-5 with a double and a solo homer. The Drive jumped ahead early when Taylor launched his fourth home run of the season in the first inning off Blueclaws starter Aaron Combs (0-3), then opened things up in the second. After a Brooks Brannon double and a Justin Riemer single, Lugo delivered the big blow — a three-run homer to left, putting Greenville up 4-0. Jersey Shore (17-29) clawed back with a run in the third on Dylan Campbell's RBI single and got within 5-3 in the sixth when Bryson Ware belted a two-run homer off Darvin Garcia (1-2), who earned the win in relief despite a shaky outing. Greenville responded emphatically in the bottom of the frame. Brannon tripled in Miguel Bleis, then scored on a fielder's choice. Arias added an RBI single before Taylor ripped a two-run double to left-center, extending the lead to 10-3 and effectively sealing the win. Garcia allowed three runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Payton Tolle, who scattered five hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings. Matt McShane tossed two scoreless innings to close it out. Ware led the Blueclaws at the plate with a home run and two RBIs. Catcher Kehden Hettiger added three hits, including a double, and scored once. The Drive showed aggression on the bases but were caught stealing twice in the first two innings. Still, their offensive outburst was enough to overcome those missed opportunities and a pair of errors by third baseman Antonio Anderson. Combs was tagged for five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Greenville then jumped on reliever Brandon Beckel for five more runs — just one earned — in the sixth. Only six of Greenville's 10 runs were earned as Jersey Shore's defense faltered late. With the win, Greenville improved to 13-11 at home and continued to climb toward .500. The Drive sit 3 1/2 games out of first place in the South Division and look to narrow the gap tomorrow. The two teams continue their six-game series with a Friday doubleheader at Fluor Field with game one scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
