Number of people saved from burning Indonesian ferry rises to 575, rescuers say

MANADO, Indonesia — Rescuers in Indonesia responding to a ferry that caught fire and killed at least three people said Monday they had rescued 575 people — far more than originally reported — and that two people were still missing. The KM Barcelona V-A caught fire Sunday in the sea off North Sulawesi province, and initial reports said five people were dead and about 280 rescued, based on the ship's manifest. However, by Monday afternoon officials updated the death toll to three, with two missing, and said many more people were aboard than were listed, and that 575 of them were rescued. 7 The KM Barcelona V-A caught fire Sunday in the sea off North Sulawesi province, and initial reports said five people were dead and about 280 rescued. Such discrepancies can reflect overcrowding and complicate search and rescue efforts, said navy First Adm. Franky Pasuna Sihombing. Video: Massive fire breaks out on ferry in Indonesia's open sea

A fire broke out on board the KM3 Barcelona ferry while sailing in the waters of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia. According to a circulating video, passengers jumped into the sea to escape the raging flames. Hours after the shocking video circulated, the Indonesian Navy announced the safe evacuation of all passengers on board the KM3 Barcelona ferry. 'All passengers were safely evacuated,' Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata, commander of the naval fleet, told the Indonesian news agency Antara. The commander of the 8th Naval Base in Manado, May Franky Pasuna Sihombing, confirmed that teams were able to rescue 280 passengers, but three of them died from illnesses, not from the fire. He added, 'Rescue teams are continuing to inspect the ship to ensure it is free of any other passengers.' The ferry was sailing from a port in the Talaud Islands to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province.
