Man convicted of manslaughter charged in Burlington carjacking
A man previously convicted of manslaughter was among two suspects arrested by Halton police after an alleged carjacking in Burlington on June 25. At around 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, a woman was driving her Porsche Macan SUV in the area of Guelph Line and Derry Road when she became concerned that she was being followed by a grey Chevrolet pickup truck, Halton police said in a press release. When the victim pulled into the parking lot of Kilbride Public School it's alleged two masked men got out of the truck and pointed handguns at her. Police said the victim immediately surrendered the Porsche, at which point the suspects took both vehicles and left. The victim was not injured. Halton police were contacted and began searching for the two vehicles. About one hour later, police said, officers found the Porsche abandoned in a parking lot in the area of Tobyn and Kilmer drives . The Chevrolet pickup truck was also found in the same area. As the investigation progressed, police said, officers were able to identify the two suspects. On June 26 at around 1:10 p.m., both suspects were located in the area of Walkers Line and Kilmer Drive . A 33-year-old Burlington man was immediately taken into custody, with police also reportedly seizing illicit drugs and two loaded firearms. Police allege the second man fled the area in a Volkswagen SUV, but this vehicle was soon found in Burlington's Sherwood Forest Park and an arrest was made. After the arrest, police said, Freddy, a Halton Police Services dog, and his handler were conducting a search in a wooded area of Sherwood Forest Park when the dog's paw touched a firearm, allegedly discarded by the suspect. The gun went off, injuring the dog's foot. Police said Freddy received medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery. Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner said in a media release that this incident is troubling for multiple reasons. 'I am deeply concerned by the escalating level of violence and the use of loaded firearms in the commission of these crimes,' he said. 'Let me be perfectly clear — this type of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated in our community. If convicted, I am hopeful the courts will impose substantial sentences that reflect the serious and dangerous nature of these offences.' The chief said he was also concerned about the backgrounds of the individuals now charged. He noted the 33-year-old Burlington suspect was convicted of manslaughter in 2018 for an armed home invasion in which a woman was shot and killed. 'He was sentenced to 10 years, but released early after receiving 16 months of credit for pre-sentence custody,' said Tanner. 'At the time of Wednesday's carjacking, he was out on statutory parole.' Tanner said the 32-year-old Oakville man arrested in Sherwood Forest Park was bound by multiple probation orders and a release order related to firearms offences. The two suspects face a number of charges, including robbery with a firearm, pointing a firearm, stealing a vehicle using violence and unauthorized possession of a weapon. During the investigation, police also reportedly seized a 3D printer and 3D printed firearms (ghost guns), along with a vehicle reprogramming device. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4777 ext. 2316 . WARMINGTON: Two Halton K9 cops hailed for heroic carjacking collars
Unfortunately, one of the police dogs suffered a gunshot wound to his paw – but he's expected to make a full recovery Get the latest from Joe Warmington straight to your inbox K9 cop Freddy, who has been a Halton regional Police officer for five years, was wounded in the line of duty in Burlington while recovering a gun allegedly used in a carjacking on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Photo by Handout / Halton Regional Police It was a Dog Day Afternoon on Wednesday when courageous Halton K9 officer Freddy was shot during the apprehension of two carjacking suspects and the seizure of a loaded gun in Burlington. This was no movie – but it certainly could be. 'Freddy was shot in the paw,' Halton Regional Police Chief Steve Tanner said Friday. 'Veterinarians did an amazing job patching him up and he is expected to fully recover.' 'It was such a high-risk situation for Freddy, his partner and the other officers,' the region's top cop added. Consts. Ryan Anderson and Jeff Dillon made the point that if Freddy didn't locate this gun, it would still be in the park – perhaps a child or passerby would have found the firearm to stepped on it. 'This was scary,' Tanner said. 'The bullet could have easily killed Freddy or his handler. This was a close call.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Both of the accused have previously had serious run-ins with the law – one is on parole for a manslaughter and the other for firearms offences. A second K9 officer named Blue was also involved in the pursuit of the accused just after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and assisted in one of the arrests. In Freddy's case, he found a firearm that was allegedly used in a gunpoint carjacking. Both German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois crosses, these two K9 cops are the heroes in this story – one for helping track down a suspect and making an arrest, the other for locating the gun alleged used in a carjacking. Traveler nabbed by CBP beagle at airport for carrying illicit food deported after kicking dog 'off the ground'
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection beagle is recovering after being kicked with such force he was lifted off the ground during a baggage inspection at Washington Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. The working dog, Freddy, suffered bruising but is expected to make a full recovery. "Thanks to everyone for their concern about Freddy who was injured while performing his duties at Dulles airport," CBP said in a statement posted on X Friday. "He was treated by his veterinarian, and is expected to make a full recovery. Here he is enjoying his favorite comfort treat – a Pup Cup!" The man accused of kicking Freddy, 70-year-old Egyptian national Hamed Ramadan Bayoumy Aly Marie, pleaded guilty this week in federal court to harming a law enforcement animal. He was ordered removed from the U.S. and departed Thursday afternoon on a flight to Egypt, according to CBP. "Kick around and find out," CBP wrote in a repost of Fox News' Bill Melugin's post about the incident. The incident occurred Tuesday after Marie arrived at Dulles from Cairo. Freddy, a 5-year-old beagle assigned to CBP's agriculture detection team, alerted officers to one of Marie's suitcases. As a CBP officer began questioning him, Marie "violently kicked Freddie with sufficient force to lift the 25-pound beagle off the ground," the agency said. Officers immediately restrained Marie and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents. A veterinarian later determined Freddie sustained contusions to his right rib area. Marie pleaded guilty Wednesday during an appearance in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to violating a law that prohibits harming animals used in law enforcement. He was credited with time served, ordered to pay the veterinary bill and directed to report to CBP for removal. CBP officials said the dog was simply doing his job. "Being caught deliberately smuggling well over one hundred pounds of undeclared and prohibited agriculture products does not give one permission to violently assault a defenseless Customs and Border Protection beagle," said Christine Waugh, CBP's area port director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C. A search of Marie's luggage revealed 55 pounds of beef; 44 pounds of rice; 15 pounds of vegetables, including eggplant, cucumbers and bell peppers; two pounds of corn seeds; and a pound of herbs. All were seized as prohibited agricultural imports. CBP agriculture specialists and detection canines play a key role in protecting U.S. agriculture from pests, diseases and contaminants. On a typical day last year, CBP said its teams intercepted more than 3,500 prohibited plant and animal products at U.S. ports of entry. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuted the case. CBP did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for further comment.
