Mosquito Supper Club Chef Expands With Quaint New Restaurant

is an award-winning food and travel writer living in New Orleans. Her work has appeared in Atlas Obscura, The Local Palate, and the Los Angeles Times. Saint Claire, from chef Melissa Martin, opens in Algiers Point Chef Melissa Martin, best known for her Uptown tasting menu-centric Mosquito Supper Club and a duo of James Beard Award-winning cookbooks, has expanded with the June 26 opening of the country French-themed Saint Claire in Algiers Point. Martin partnered with her friend Cassi Dymond to open Saint Claire. Dymond is co-founder of Maple Street's Satsuma Cafe and co-owner of Kalimera Construction, which specializes in dynamic restaurant build-outs, including Dakar NOLA, the Tell Me Bar, and N7. Located across the river, 15 minutes from the CBD, Saint Claire is situated in a historic 1920s home at the center of a cul-de-sac, surrounded by live oak trees, just steps from the Mississippi River levee. The restored building at 1300 Richland Road was once the medical officer's home on the site of Camp Algiers, an immigration center, and a WWII-era internment camp. Unlike Mosquito Supper Club, Saint Claire doesn't feature a prix fixe menu or communal dining. The opening menu features nods to seasonal vegetables and local seafood, including eggplant fritters with powdered sugar, smoked beets with trout roe, and farmed Brightside oysters from Grand Isle. There's a duck and andouille gumbo, gnocchi with crabmeat in a lemon beurre blanc sauce, and grouper with fried okra. Inside, the space is warm and inviting, with a palette of buttery yellow and soft blues, rustic French antiques, and mismatched porcelain plates and silverware. Candlelight flickers at Saint Claire, the welcoming country mouse to Mosquito Supper Club's city setting. Spicy Mango is now open on Frenchmen Street Larry Morrow, whose goal is to have 'the largest Black-owned restaurant group in the country,' opened Morrow Hospitality's fifth restaurant in New Orleans on July 5. Morrow premiered Spicy Mango, a Creole-Caribbean fusion restaurant on the corner of Frenchmen Street and Esplanade Avenue during Essence Fest. The 200-seat restaurant exudes an island vibe, with its creative use of thatching, a dining room mango tree, and an expansive patio featuring a central fountain. Jordan Lindsey, the company's culinary director, created an irie menu with specialties like jerked chicken, crawfish beignets, and a mango-fueled island salad. Since he and his mother, Lenora Chong, opened their first restaurant, Morrow's, in 2018, the company's portfolio has grown to include Morrow Steak, Monday Restaurant and Bar, Sun Chong, and Spicy Mango, as well as two nightclubs, Hide/Seek and Treehouse. Thaihey has a stall at St. Roch Market Chef Orawin's 'Nim' Yimchalam now has a Thaihey presence at the St. Roch Market. Yimchalam, who operates Thaihey at 308 Decatur Street with her husband Nathan Greene, now serves a menu of not the usual Thai dishes, like nam khoa tod, a crispy rice ball spiced with red curry, Thai herbs, and chunks of salami. The Thai sloppy Joe, a loose meat sandwich on a bun, bright with Thai basil, is a craveable new classic. Her expansion into the St. Roch Market brings her full circle— the chef's first location was at the now-shuttered White Star Market in Baton Rouge. Cajun Flames becomes the second LUFU The short-lived Cajun Flames restaurant from the team behind LUFU in the CBD, is now the Indian restaurant's second location. The Cajun concept didn't fly, opening and closing within a year. Led by chefs Sachin Darade, Aman Kota, and Shan Samantray, the location that was formerly Saint John at 1117 Decatur Street will drill deeper into the regional Indian dishes popular at the original restaurant. LUFU, which stands for Let Us Feed U, opened July 3. Fur Bébe Café is perfect for the dog days of summer Fur Bébe Café is New Orleans's first dog cafe, located at 4826 Magazine Street, Uptown. When it comes to a theme, owner Barrett Cooper is like a dog with a bone. He knows how to create a mood — Cooper operated the atmospheric Double Dealer lounge at the Orpheum. This cafe's theme is ever-present, from the bone-shaped door handle to the menu of dog treats and hilarious AI-generated dog art hung at pooch level. Of course, there's a menu for humans too, a deep coffee program along with doggy named bites like the Corgi Cobb salad and the Catahoula toast topped with blueberry compote, lemon ricotta, and mint. The dog- and family-friendly spot includes a shaded side patio with plans for an off-leash play area in the near future.

Children from across Livingston celebrate Bastille Day in true French style

The celebration brought France to West Lothian with French music, food, games, and art activities, offering young learners a memorable introduction to both the language and culture of France. Children from across Livingston celebrated Bastille Day in true French style this week as local French teacher, Sandra Kasparek's popular bilingual summer camp launched its 2025 season with a festive, fun-filled day of cultural immersion and language learning. Set in a private venue in Livingston, Sandra's French-themed Holiday Activities Club opened its doors on 14 July - Bastille Day, France's national holiday, marking the start of an exciting summer of creativity, connection, and bilingual discovery. ‌ The celebration brought France to West Lothian with French music, food, games, and art activities, offering young learners a memorable introduction to both the language and culture of France. ‌ 'This was the perfect way to kick off camp,' said Sandra Kasparek, a seasoned French teacher and licensee of the award-winning La Jolie Ronde Programme. 'Bastille Day is a fantastic opportunity for children to connect with French traditions in a fun, meaningful way. It sets the tone for the rest of the summer where every day is a blend of language, learning, and laughter.' Sandra has been running French classes in Livingston for over 15 years, and her summer camp has grown into a beloved local tradition. This year, excitement reached new heights with children from as far afield as Keswick in Cumbria returning for the vibrant, bilingual experience. The Bastille Day celebration was just the beginning. Throughout July and into August, children will enjoy a range of hands-on activities including baking, arts and crafts, dance, outdoor games, and role-playing—all conducted in both English and French. ‌ It's an immersive approach that keeps children engaged while developing real-world language skills. Parent Jane, from Livingston, said: 'My daughter Grace has been attending Sandra's Summer Camp for a few years now, and every year, she can't wait to go back. 'Grace absolutely loves meeting new friends from all over, and the fun activities keep her engaged while boosting her language skills. ‌ 'It's more than just a camp, it's a place where she feels at home and excited to learn. Every time summer approaches, she's the first to ask, 'When can I go back to Sandra's holiday club?' Sandra's camp is open for both full-day (9am–4pm) and half-day bookings, with discounts available for multi-day attendance. The programme not only boosts language confidence but also creates a warm and welcoming environment where children feel at home. ‌ 'What we do here is more than just language lessons,' added Sandra. 'It's about building confidence, sparking curiosity, and creating lasting memories. Seeing children so eager to return year after year, especially on a day like Bastille Day, reminds me how powerful and joyful learning can be.'

Seaside creperie's Gallic flair in charming Anglesey village

It's quite easy to find Mojo's restaurant in Rhosneigr. It's opposite Scarlett's Fish & Chip bar and Gecko, a shop selling beach products and renting out surf boards. You come across it if you've parked in the village and are heading towards the beach. I called in on a sunny Wednesday lunchtime last week. It's been operating for some years and is continuing with its French-themed dishes on its pleasingly diverse menu. You can expect galettes and crepes among the more traditional choices of Chicken club sandwich, Smashed avocado on toast and Rocky Road dessert. The galettes - a pancake made with organic buckwheat flour and served with salad and slaw - include ones with Steak, mushrooms and blue cheese (£13.50) and a Yellow Dot galette with cheese, Welsh ham and a local free range egg yolk. (£12.95). However my heart sank as it seemed busy from the look of the packed, outdoor tables and I worried about getting a seat but almost all the indoor tables were available. I sat there and checked the menu. There's a good range of sandwiches and ciabattas. Steak ciabatta with caramelised onions (£15.95), Halloumi with homemade chilli jam and lettuce ciabatta (£12.50) sounded good, as did the Welsh ham & cheese ciabatta (£11.50). But I liked the idea of a Bloody Mary Prawn open sandwich. It was described as "Atlantic prawns with rustic tomato sauce, mayonnaise, hint of vodka, baby gem lettuce (in a) fresh, multigrain open sandwich." The prawns were lovely and soft, and sprinkled with paprika. The "hint of vodka" may have been there but wasn't noticeable to me, and the lettuce was rocket on this occasion. It was a lovely, well-presented, light meal. There was a nice touch - a warm, grilled lemon which when squeezed over the seafood really gave those prawns some zesty piquancy. The slice of brown bread was fresh. Desserts here include a Canadian pancake Stack with four light and fluffy pancakes for £8. Customers can add a rasher of "streaky bacon" for £2. I was impressed that extra toppings like strawberries and bananas only cost £1 each. The crepes included Rocky Road (£8.50) with chocolate pieces, biscuit, marshmallows and chocolate sauce, and Biscoff (£9.50). This had "clotted cream, ice cream and Biscoff crumble" and I ordered that. The crepe was doughy and warm and came with a sauce and a sprinkling of Biscoff crumbs rather than crumble as such. Personally I would have referred a more conventional, thicker crumble. Checking with the hardworking chef Jeff later he said the sauce was a Biscoff sauce. It was pleasant enough. The vanilla ice cream worked better with the crepe than the what seemed to be whipped cream on my visit, because its sweetness contrasted nicely with the savoury dough. The choice of drinks at the bar includes Brooklyn - The Stonewall Inn IPA, and Birrificio Angelo Poretti lager (4.8pc) aswell as products from The Rhosneigr Gin Company. Mojo's interior is unpretentious. There's a wooden floor with tables and bar made from planks of timber. In keeping with the coastal setting there are prints of a turtle and shell on the wall, and even a bizarre, seaweed, themed lampshade. I'd definitely call in again. Mojo's is a cut above your average seaside eaterie. A visit here sets you up nicely to explore this charming village and Rhosneigr's two beaches Traeth Crigyll and Traeth Llydan. The facts Location: Mojo's restaurant, bar & creperie, 7 Marine Terrace, High Street, Rhosneigr, Anglesey, LL64 5UQ. Tel.: 01407 810737. Open Monday to Wednesday 10am till 4pm, Thursday and Friday 10am till 10pm, Saturday 9.30am till 10pm, Sunday 9.30am till 5pm. Food: Well-presented and tasty with a large, diverse menu Service: Attentive and prompt The bill: Bloody Mary prawn open sandwich (£13) and Biscoff crepe (£9.50), fresh orange (£3), and Americano (£3.60). Total: £29.10. Verdict: Tres bien.

Traci finds joy in the little things

Traci finds joy in the little things HOSTED by the Durban Association of Miniature Enthusiasts (DAME) in Westville recently, the World of Miniatures Fair, the biggest little show in the province, was again a hit for Durban residents. The Queensburgh News met up with Traci Brass who has served as DAME chairperson since early 2023. She said the association is a small but passionate club that began in 1992 with just 11 members. Over the years DAME has grown into a vibrant group of about 40 members. Like all the members, the Queensburgh resident is deeply passionate about miniature creations. 'We find joy and fulfillment in our tiny worlds of detailed craftsmanship that come to life through patience, precision, and imagination.' Also read: WATCH: Lights, camera and action at KZN's 'biggest little show' Since 1994, the association has been hosting miniature shows that serve as a gathering for enthusiasts to showcase their talents, inspire newcomers, and celebrate this captivating hobby. Speaking about the craft, she said miniature crafting is an inclusive hobby — whether you're an experienced artist or just curious to try, success is within everyone's reach. 'It's a rewarding journey that nurtures skills like patience, discipline, and creativity.' Brass' journey with miniatures began when she visited her first DAME show in 2021 after seeing it advertised on Facebook. 'I was instantly captivated and fell in love with the hobby. The very next day, I bought my first project house and started creating. I particularly enjoy revamping houses, and recently I finished a French-themed display house. However, my favorite projects are book nooks — tiny, detailed scenes that fit perfectly into small spaces.' Through DAME, Brass has learnt much from members who host workshops and generously share their knowledge. 'The community is incredibly caring and inspiring, and this hobby continually teaches me self-discipline and patience. It's a wonderful way to express creativity and find joy in the small details of life.' The association hosts workshops once a month and welcomes anyone to join. A Big Fire Broke Out At Disney's Epcot, And The Video Is Pretty Disturbing

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Guests at Walt Disney World's Epcot experienced what seemed to be a truly scary situation this past Saturday night. At that time, a fire broke out in the French Pavilion section of the park. All staff and patrons were quickly evacuated from both the relatively new Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and the French cafe as a result. While a number of people may have stopped eating and drinking the international offerings at the location, they seemingly didn't hesitate to take out their phones and record what was happening. In the aftermath of the situation, videos of the fire began to surface on the web, and it's admittedly disturbing footage. The clips posted to social media show scary plumes of dark smoke disturbing the faux French skyline. @megantooboo on TikTok was flying over the scene in the park's Skyline Gondolas during the worst of it, with the caption stating the video was taken at 7:10pm on March 22. Her video clearly catches a view of the flames: From this aerial shot, the fire is seen to originate in the backstage area behind the buildings, which was later confirmed by officials. Allegedly the fire started in a walk-in cooler, as reported by the Associated Press and other outlets. The Skyline Gondolas heading in and out of the park seemingly had the clearest view of the ordeal. Here's another video from a Gondola going the opposite direction, captured by @ryanwmsn on X: Despite the intensity of the smoke shown on camera, fire officials told Fox 35 News Orlando that the fire was extinguished in under 30 minutes. Still, the following video shared by @disneychick1997 on TikTok still seems to indicate that this was no small matter: What arguably makes the video so disturbing is how peaceful everything else seems to be. The sky is perfectly cloudless and blue, with the setting sun bathing everything in a nice, golden color. Then there is the endless dark plume of black smoke erupting from the French-themed plaza. Amid Epcot's storied history, this is not the wildest situation to ever unfold at the Disney World theme park. Nevertheless, a fire is no joking matter, which is why attendees needed to be cleared from the area. Despite the staff's attempt to evacuate the park, or at least clear the area near the French Pavilion, patrons could be seen milling about relatively close to the fire. What this may signify is that even though the fire looked severe, it was under control. It's ultimately just something of a relief that the fire didn't turn out to be even more severe. After all, even more of the trees in the French Pavilion could have caught fire, and the flames could have spread quickly. The extent of the fire and smoke damage is still unknown, as of this writing. So we'll have to wait for updates on Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and other attractions. I personally hope the underrated Pixar classic's ride, which opened at Epcot in October 2021, doesn't have to be closed for long, as I'd hate to see the construction walls come back. But, at the end of the day, I'm also hopeful that no one was harmed during the fire.
