Garrett Hedlund: 'Barron's Cove' dad is haunted by the past
1 of 5 | Christian Convery (L) and Garrett Hedlund star in the film, "Barron's Cove," now available on video-on-demand platforms. Photo courtesy of Well Go USA NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- Tulsa King, Country Strong and Friday Night Lights star Garrett Hedlund says that, at the heart of his new crime thriller, Barron's Cove, is a flawed, but loving father with deep sense of self-doubt. "My son was nearing on 2 years old when I read the script," Hedlund, 40, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "What I realized was Caleb's underbelly through the whole film was him wondering if he was enough as a father and I thought it was so tender and so sweet that a man that had done such badness in his life and had this kind of haunted past, made all these mistakes, was so genuinely wondering if he was enough," he said. "We're so familiar with seeing kids wondering if they're enough for their parents, but I don't see as many parents wondering if they're enough for their children." Now available on video-on-demand platforms, the film was written and directed by newcomer Evan Ari Kelman. It follows Caleb (Hedlund), a grieving father with organized crime connections who kidnaps Ethan (Christian Convery), the spoiled boy he believes is responsible for his young son Barron's death. Dante Hale plays Barron, while Hamish Linklater plays Lyle, the local politician who coldly adopts Ethan just to improve his popularity with voters, and Brittany Snow plays Jackie, Caleb's heartbroken ex-wife. Hedlund said he was a fan of Christian's Netflix show, Sweet Tooth, and enjoyed sharing scenes with him, even though most were emotionally intense, with Caleb torturing and terrifying the child to find out exactly what happened to his own. "He's a talented actor. He's got an illuminated future ahead of him. He's been working steadily. He knows his stuff. He's got an arsenal," Hedlund said. "He's got a tool shed of everything that he needs and is well-equipped for any journey, so he and I got to just sit back in between takes and have fun." Christian's tech-obsessed character, however, simply radiated "entitlement" as he is questioned about how Barron ended up tragically tied to train tracks between his school and his home, Hedlund emphasized. "The lack of empathy is very interesting," he said, pointing to how Christian, like some real-life kids, doesn't seem to understand the word "no" or respect others because there are no consequences to his actions. "If you look at it through that moral lens, that a kid in this day and age, in this generation, with screens and monitors and everything, if they're so consumed with that and that's what life is, they have no awareness of the impact of their actions," he added. "To them, there's nothing dissimilar to a video game." No matter what the role is, Hedlund said he tries to give it 100 percent of his effort, then leaves it behind when it's time to move on to the next job. "I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing it for, what attracted me to the film, whose hands I was in and, then, what they would allow me to do. So, I just tried to elevate everything that was on the page," Hedlund said about Barron's Cove. "When you feel like you've done something or relate just a fragment of what a guy like this would express as he's going through such events, you're able to put it down, focus on the next day," he added. "I would struggle more to put it down had I shorted myself on screen every day or been too afraid to express an emotion. But, I love these films and, no matter if it's a thriller, I still always look at it like it's any other drama." Tramell Tillman, Raúl Castillo and Stephen Lang co-star.

Scott Porter's marriage went through 'complete change' when wife discovered genetic disorder
Scott Porter's marriage went through a "complete change" when his wife discovered that she had Huntington's disease in her family. The 45-year-old actor has been married to casting director Kelsey Mayfield since 2013, but when she discovered that her mother had the brain disorder that affects movement, thinking, and behaviour, he noted just how "quickly" it had altered things between them. He told People: "That was definitely a moment of complete change, as far as the trajectory of my wife's and my relationship. "It can really tear through families very quickly." Hungtingo's disease is genetic, meaning that each child of a parent who suffers from it has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting it themselves but the Ginny and Georgia star - who has McCoy, 10, and eight-year-old Clover with Kelsey - insisted that getting tested is a "choice" that must be made by each indiviudal. He added: "People who find Huntington's disease is in their family have a choice to make: get tested or not get tested. "Live your life not knowing or live your life knowing that you possibly have a neurodegenerative disease that could take your mind, your body, your balance, your moods, and turn them into something completely different than you are now. "There is no right or wrong way to go about things." The Friday Night Lights actor also noted that when Kelsey learned of her diagnosis, that she simply told him she wanted to be around "as long as possible" for her children He said: "My wife said the words to me: 'I want to be a mother as long as possible.' And that was the impetus for her wanting to get tested. It was the right thing. And as her husband, I was so incredibly supportive of that. "The moments immediately after her positive test were silent. "She looked at me and she said, '50/50 chance. It was a coin flip and it came up tails.."

'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake
'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake originally appeared on Parade. Friday Night Lights actor Scott Porter shared a never-to-forget moment with Justin Timberlake before they were stars. Porter also has a musical talent, which Hart of Dixie fans know. The actor recently shed light on his days in VoicePlay. Porter was a founding member of the group, where he honed his beatboxing up for NSYNC on their first tour in the '90s. Speaking with Page Six to promote the new season of Ginny & Georgia, Porter recalled a special moment with Timberlake. 'There was one particular performance that I remember. We were singing on a floating stage in the middle of a lake and had to take a little boat on the way out. And we didn't spend a lot of time with NSYNCat all,' he expressed. 'But on that particular stage, we had to all go out together on this boat. So Justin and I were beatboxing with each other on this boat.' Porter explained that years later, he was filming Speed Racer in Berlin when Timberlake was playing a concert there. The actor recalled Timberlake recognizing him backstage at the concert, but not from Friday Night Lights. 'He [Timberlake] goes, you're the beatboxer that I beatboxed with on that boat to that floating stage in Florida.' I don't know how Justin Timberlake even remembered that, but he did, and that was pretty cool,' Porter shared. It was quite the trip down memory lane for Porter and his fans, too. Some of his fans, though, were more shocked by his VoicePlay news than the Timberlake story. 'how did it not know he was the founder of freaking VoicePlay,' and 'HE'S A FOUNDING MEMBER OF VOICEPLAY?!?!?!' were a couple of comments on the Page Six TikTok featuring Porter's interview. 'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake first appeared on Parade on Jun 10, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
