Netflix fans issue 'brutal' warning about 'fantastic' new period drama

Netflix fans have been 'blown away' by one very popular period drama but viewers have warned it is not for the faint hearted. Following the popularity of historical dramas such as Bridgerton and The Buccaneers, viewers are keen for more period shows and American Primeval may be exactly what fans may need to fill that void. The Western miniseries dropped on Netflix in January this year, starring Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch and GLOW actress Betty Gilpin. American Primeval is set against the backdrop of the Utah War in 1857, and tells the story of a mum and her son travelling across the brutal landscape that strips them of their freedom and pushes them towards savagery in the American West. Mum Sara, portrayed by Betty, is on the run with her son Devin, trying to escape their past life where she is wanted for the murder of her affluent husband, and is hoping to reunite her son with his father. ‌ The period drama is a blend of reality and fiction, with some characters inspired by real individuals who were all struggling to survive. The climatic episode, which depicts Mormon soldiers disguised as Natives attacking a group of pioneers, was based off a real event, The Mountain Meadows Massacre. ‌ The official synopsis reads: "Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquillity are losing the battle to hatred and fear. "Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace - even fewer know compassion. There's no safe haven in these wild lands, and only one goal matters: survival." Reddit users have been exchanging period drama recommendations and American Primeval appears to be a popular topic of conversation on the forum, the Express reports. One person suggested: "American Primeval - early America period piece, limited series, absolutely engrossing." ‌ Another echoed this sentiment with high praise, adding: "Based on an obscure true story... Gritty, with ultra-kinetic violence." However, several others have issued a warning about how "brutal" the series is. A Netflix fan who was left captivated by the show, shared: "Recently watched this on Netflix and it blew me away. Beautiful cinematography and a gritty and violent take on the wild west, this is just fantastic." ‌ Another enthusiastic viewer exclaimed: "This show was f***ing amazing," while someone else revealed their newfound fascination: "Love love love. For the first time we are seeing the story of the Mormons. Had no idea." The general consensus appeared to be hugely positive with remarks such as "Brutal show. Amazing," adding to the acclaim. Critics and audiences alike have all given American Primeval a thumbs up with a strong 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes,. ‌ The positive feedback continued as someone said: "Much, much better than I was expecting. Saw all episodes straight through. Rather brutal." Another penned: "The limited series was excellent. I'm not a big fan of the genre but this series kept me engaged the entire way. It is well written and well cast." Stunning cinematography and first class acting." In light of the show's success, the creators Peter Berg and Mark L Smith, have hinted at the possibility of expanding the universe with a prequel series. Berg revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "We're talking about it right now. "That's the way we'd go if we do it. It would be a real big time jump to keep that crew going, but the idea of looking backwards is really interesting to me."

'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake

'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake originally appeared on Parade. Friday Night Lights actor Scott Porter shared a never-to-forget moment with Justin Timberlake before they were stars. Porter also has a musical talent, which Hart of Dixie fans know. The actor recently shed light on his days in VoicePlay. Porter was a founding member of the group, where he honed his beatboxing up for NSYNC on their first tour in the '90s. Speaking with Page Six to promote the new season of Ginny & Georgia, Porter recalled a special moment with Timberlake. 'There was one particular performance that I remember. We were singing on a floating stage in the middle of a lake and had to take a little boat on the way out. And we didn't spend a lot of time with NSYNCat all,' he expressed. 'But on that particular stage, we had to all go out together on this boat. So Justin and I were beatboxing with each other on this boat.' Porter explained that years later, he was filming Speed Racer in Berlin when Timberlake was playing a concert there. The actor recalled Timberlake recognizing him backstage at the concert, but not from Friday Night Lights. 'He [Timberlake] goes, you're the beatboxer that I beatboxed with on that boat to that floating stage in Florida.' I don't know how Justin Timberlake even remembered that, but he did, and that was pretty cool,' Porter shared. It was quite the trip down memory lane for Porter and his fans, too. Some of his fans, though, were more shocked by his VoicePlay news than the Timberlake story. 'how did it not know he was the founder of freaking VoicePlay,' and 'HE'S A FOUNDING MEMBER OF VOICEPLAY?!?!?!' were a couple of comments on the Page Six TikTok featuring Porter's interview. 'Friday Night Lights' Actor, 45, Reveals Surprising Connection to Justin Timberlake first appeared on Parade on Jun 10, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared.

Billy Bob Thornton: I'm not really a part of Hollywood

Billy Bob Thornton doesn't consider himself to be part of Hollywood. The 69-year-old actor has enjoyed huge success in the movie business, starring in films such as 'A Simple Plan', 'Armageddon' and 'Friday Night Lights' - but he tries to distance himself from the Hollywood scene. He told People: "I don't talk about politics and stuff with people. I just kind of stay out of it all. I'm not really much of a part of Hollywood, as you say. I'm at home with the family, or I'm in a recording studio or on the road or making this. "Those are the things I do, and I just kind of mind my own business." Billy Bob plays Tommy Norris - a landman for an oil company - in the Paramount series Landman, and he's enjoyed playing the character more than he initially imagined. The actor said: "It's almost like a few characters I've played boiled into one. He's like the guy from Goliath, Bad Santa, it's like he doesn't suffer fools, but he also has some fun every now and then. I'm just basically playing who I would be if I were a landman." Billy Bob previously confessed that he feels "nervous" watching himself on screen. The actor revealed that he's tried to avoid seeing himself in Landman, even though he's been widely praised for his performance. He told 'Extra': "I get nervous watching myself, so I haven't actually seen them myself." Landman was created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, and Taylor actually wrote the show with Bill Bob in mind. The actor shared: "I had done a cameo for Taylor in '1883.' I just went down to Fort Worth and did this cameo in '1883'. "When were at the premiere of that in Las Vegas, he said, 'Listen, I'm writing this show with your voice called 'Landman.' He goes, 'I think you're really going to dig this.' So he had told me about it a couple of years before we actually started filming and I got really excited when he sent me the first couple of scripts. "It kind of fit like a glove."
