I've played the Switch 2 for over a week and it's missing these key games

I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Nintendo Switch 2. From snappier Joy-Cons to improved performance, there was a lot to get hyped for. But now, over a week after its official release, I'm at odds. While I think the improvements are promising, especially the larger and more vibrant screen, it's the software that's taken the most enormous misstep. It's owed largely to the fact that the Switch 2 launched with just one main first-party game in Mario Kart World. The rest are third-party titles that launched years prior, including Cyberpunk 2077, Split Fiction, Street Fighter 6, and Hogwarts Legacy. Don't get me wrong, these are fantastic games — Cyberpunk being one of my all-time favorites — I wish the Switch 2 had a bit more going for it. Especially given its exorbitant price tag. Surprisingly, Nintendo didn't have more Mario games up its sleeve for the new hardware. You'd think Nintendo would want to come out with a bang, highlighting major features using its very bread and butter with something like a Mario Odyssey 2 or even a Super Smash Bros sequel. Instead, we got Mario Kart World, a rather lackluster experience in terms of overall content. You can have a blast so long as you have a good crew to play with, but beyond that, it's a pretty limiting title and really comes down to your enjoyment of racing games to begin with. You could point out some of the incredible visual and performance enhancements available for more well-known titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. But it's a significant drag that older Nintendo games are being put on a pedestal. I know some games are releasing in the coming months that could put these woes to bed, like Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Still, Nintendo should have launched with more first-party experiences to make up for the already limited lineup, like a revamped Mario Party, Luigi's Mansion, or Mario Golf. I can't lie, FromSoftware is one of my favorite video game developers. That's why I was let down by the fact that the Switch 2 edition of Elden Ring didn't launch along with the system, and there's no real understanding of when it might release. The Nintendo website says it's supposed to release this year, but it's still unclear when that might be. That's a massive release for Nintendo and works to get some extra fans interested in FromSoft games ahead of the launch of Duskbloods on the Switch 2 next year. That's why I wish more FromSoft games were launching on the system. Instead of just Elden Ring, why not bring over some of the additional Dark Souls series of games to the platform? The original Switch already has access to Dark Souls Remastered, and it's not like Dark Souls 2 or 3 would be too intensive for the refreshed hardware. A full Dark Souls trilogy available on the Switch 2 from the outset would have been huge for fans of the developer. You could even throw in Sekiro, which is one of its most beloved experiences and even won Game of the Year in 2019. That would make for a killer software suite and probably wouldn't take too much effort to put together. As of writing, FromSoftware fans just have Dark Souls Remastered to play around in on the Switch 2 as they wait for Elden Ring and Duskbloods, which is a tad unfortunate, seeing as it's pretty much dead in terms of co-op and PvP invasions. Although it is a family console, the Switch 2 is missing out on more horror titles. If you're a fan of killer thrillers and terrifying horror experiences, you're largely stuck with the games that already existed on the original Switch. I'm a huge horror fan, and it's a bit of a drag to see such a minimal offering in this category. Just take a peek at the official Nintendo online eShop for its Switch 2 titles, and you'll see that horror isn't even an option in its genre selection. Again, I understand this is more of a family console, and horror probably isn't the most-searched genre on Switch, but the variety would be a welcome change for the platform. Nintendo could have tapped some heavy hitters for a well-rounded third-party horror selection, including Dead Space remake, Metro Exodus, Still Wakes the Deep, and Slitterhead, to name a few. Maybe it's the fact that horror is just too niche for the Switch to begin with, but I'd like to see a wider offering on the more adept hardware. Especially given that beloved horror franchises in Silent Hill and Resident Evil are basking in the limelight with massive hits on the horizon. If you are one of the few looking for some horror games on the Switch 2, I recommend playing Observer, Fatum Betula, Signalis, and World of Horror. They don't put the new hardware to the test, but they are nail-biting as ever.

How to Fight Elden Ring Nightreign's Everdark Sovereign Bosses

Everything you've learned about Limveld over the weeks since Elden Ring Nightreign's launch has just been flipped on its head. Developer FromSoftware previously announced that enhanced versions of the game's bosses would feature in post-launch updates, but they were shadowdropped with little to no warning on Wednesday, with full details from publisher Bandai Namco. These Everdark Sovereigns have certainly been eating their Wheaties, because they're bigger, stronger and have wicked special moves that you'll have to learn if you want to stand a chance against this new threat. But if you can conquer the next iterations of the Nightlord, you'll earn a special currency that opens up an endgame shop filled with loot. Here's everything you need to know about the Everdark Sovereigns, ranging from what they are, how to take them on and what goodies you can earn if you're skilled enough to take one of these bad boys out. What are the Everdark Sovereigns? If you've put the beat down on Elden Ring Nightreign's roster of Nightlord aspects and come out the other side thinking they were too easy, the Everdark Sovereigns are designed with you in mind. These foes are enhanced "hard mode" versions of the regular expedition bosses, and they add new moves and mechanics to the already challenging night three fights. Everdark Sovereign fights begin with the boss's second phase before shifting into a new third phase, making them some of the deadliest enemies in Nightreign. Each Everdark Sovereign expedition is available for a week, after which a new fight will become available. The first Everdark Sovereign is Adel, the Gaping Jaw, and Everdark Sovereign versions of the Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight will rotate in and out over the coming weeks. Eventually, there'll be an Everdark Sovereign variant of every Nightlord aspect, though there's no word on if they'll be ready after the first three hard mode bosses have rotated into the game. Bandai Namco/Screenshot by CNET How can you embark on an expedition to fight one of Nightreign's new bosses? You don't have to jump through too many hoops to try to take on the Everdark Sovereigns, but they won't all be accessible at the same time. These bosses are time-gated and are in the game for one week each. So long as you've beaten the normal version of the currently available Everdark Sovereign, you'll be able to access the special expedition during this time. A new expedition outlined in purple will appear at the bottom of the list, and embarking on the current Everdark Sovereign expedition is as simple as choosing this option and proceeding normally. If you've beaten the easier, base game version of the current Everdark Sovereign and you don't see the special expedition in your list of available options, make sure you have a functioning internet connection. You can take the Everdark Sovereigns on in solo mode (if you're a masochist), but you'll need to remain online and connected to the Elden Ring Nightreign servers to access this new content. How can you beat these hard mode bosses? If you want to beat an Everdark Sovereign, you'll have to "get good." There are no two ways about it: These bosses are much harder than their base game counterparts. They start in their second phase, have new third phases and special moves that hit like a truck. With that being said, there are still ways you can even the odds after mastering the basics of Elden Ring Nightreign. Many of the skills that you should learn to challenge base game bosses still apply to Everdark Sovereign expeditions. It's more important than ever to set up a cohesive relic build that synergizes with your class's play style. Buying chalices from the Jar Bazaar and farming Murk to buy up some more relics will help you create the right build for your favorite Nightfarer. During your expeditions, you'll obviously want to pick up weapons and shields that provide you with passive stats that pair well with your Nightfarer, as well as your general play style with the character. You should also be running the most optimized rune-earning route possible to get as close to level 15 as you can by the time you enter the third night. Most importantly, you'll want to pick up weapons that have status effects that the bosses are weak to. If the enhanced version of Adel is anything to go by, Everdark Sovereigns will move quickly and have short windows of vulnerability. Pick up a weapon that exploits their weakness to break down their poise and extend the amount of time you can whack at the boss. High damage per second is a virtue. The quicker you can knock out a boss, the less time it has to defeat you and your friends. A war of attrition is an easy way to lose an expedition in Nightreign, so plan ahead before you ever face down the new Nightlord aspect. Bandai Namco/Screenshot by CNET What do you get for beating an Everdark Sovereign? In addition to the normal expedition rewards, you'll have a chance to earn new boss relics and a special currency called Sovereign Sigils. The boss relics are incredibly powerful alterations to popular play styles. The first Everdark Sovereign, the Gaping Jaw, drops the Dark Night of the Baron relic. This relic improves the damage of critical hits twice over and makes you generate runes upon landing one of those crushing blows. It seems as though Everdark Sovereign relics will be a powerful new way for Nightreign's min-maxers to advance their build in a game where you don't pick how your stats change past the character select screen. Beating your first Everdark Sovereign unlocks a new merchant in the Roundtable Hold. The Collector Signboard is located on the beachy area just outside of the Jar Bazaar. It can be found in the southwest corner of the hub. This is where you'll spend the currency you earn from beating the new bosses. Spending Sovereign Sigils is a great way to grow your power between runs. They're also the keys to unlocking quality-of-life features that many players have been clamoring for. Sovereign Sigils can be spent to unlock a suite of new chalices that unlock more relic rites for your Nightfarers, as well as an improved version of the Scenic Flatstone that guarantees you purple-rarity relics. Nightfarer garb can also be purchased with Sovereign Sigils, but it's the same wardrobe of skins purchasable with Murk, the other currency you earn from expeditions. This currency can also be spent to choose specific Shifting Earth events for your next run, restore the Roundtable Hold to its appearance from before the defeat of the final Nightlord and change the appearance of the relic earned at the end of the Guardian's remembrance questline. Beating one of the Everdark Sovereigns for the first time will reward you with 25 Sovereign Sigils, while subsequent runs will earn you just 5 of the coveted new currency. The most expensive items in the shop -- the skins that are worth 35,000 Murk -- cost 20 Sovereign Sigils, so the earn rate of this currency is fairly generous so long as you can consistently beat these bosses.

Best Relics in Elden Ring Nightreign

Image via: FromSoftware The best way to customize the abilities of your character in Elden Ring is through the relics you choose. Each relic comes with its own set of powers, and having the right ones can take your build from just decent to great. Relics can increase base stats, help with acquiring Runes, or support a particular playstyle. Relics must be chosen in tandem with character attributes and combat strategies. Relics That Boost Base Stats So, if you're running Executor for instance, whose Dexterity is currently S-tier level, relics that boost Dexterity will not only increase your damage, but your attack speed and general action economy, making your character much more dynamic in combat. One particularly interesting artifact here is the Old Pocketwatch, which increases Dexterity directly, letting you attack faster and improve the flow of combat overall. Focus on relics that improve the stats your character excels in to get the most out of your combat performance. Elden Ring Nightreign BEST RELICS & What They Do Make sure to look at your Nightfarer's base stats and arm them with relics that compliment whichever their highest stat ratings are. If a stat is currently at A or S tier, that's a pretty clear indication that a stat-boosting relic will have a big impact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 4 Live Call Answering Services That Should Help Boost Efficiency - Worth A Peek Learn More Undo Relics to Boost Rune Acquisition As repetitive as Rune farming is, the proper relics make the grind much more fulfilling. Increasing Rune acquisition lets you invest in developing your Nightfarer's power without stressing quite so much about the limited availability of resources. Equip relics that automatically increase Rune gains, and before long, you'll watch your Nightfarer become more powerful and potent without much effort. Any relic that provides passive Rune increases are one's your going to want to focus on, particularly if you're looking to boost your team's progression speed. The New Shop Relics Are Amazing! Elden Ring: Nightreign Relics That Match Your Playstyle It's important to state that not all relics are meant to be stat or acquisition rate boosts. Some are directly designed to increase the potential of certain playstyles to make them more effective. This means characters like Guardian, the tanky shield-bearer, can really take advantage of relics that improve the effectiveness of their Guard Counters or raise enemy aggro. These relics go a long way in making sure your character feels as mighty as a frontline warrior should by maximizing your survivability. If you want to specialize more in controlling the battlefield and bumping damage, you'll want to equip relics that increase your defensive output or aggro control to fully maximize your tank build. These relics do not only improve your individual resilience, but enable you to pitch in more strategically to your team's success. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin throws his support behind Elden Ring movie: "Alex Garland is a first rate director"

Martin has broken his silence on the Elden Ring movie and its choice of director in a new blog post. "Here's the latest about the ELDER RING [sic] movie that was announced a few days ago," Martin wrote on his site. "A24 is a kickass studio, and Alex Garland is a first rate director." While he didn't offer more information, his 'current mood' based on the blog post was "hopeful." Curiously, he also linked to a three-minute video from YouTuber Zayf the Scholar titled, 'Why the Elden Ring Movie WON'T SUCK - Director Reveals His TRUE Power Level'. So, there's that. For the un-Tarnished among you confused by George R.R. Martin's involvement in the Elden Ring movie, he famously constructed the 2022 game's lore and rich history, which director Hidetaka Miyazaki and developers FromSoftware built upon with a tale of Great Runes, Erdtrees, and Elden Rings as the player aims to take his place as the Elden Lord in The Lands Between. As of now, very little is known about the Elden Ring movie. Annihilation and Warfare director Alex Garland is helming the project, while Heartstopper actor Kit Connor is circling as lead. Beyond that, fans are hoping the big-screen adaptation will swerve the source material's focus on the player's Tarnished. Instead, their hopes are pinned on following the story of Vyke, a pivotal figure in the game's world, who ultimately stopped short of becoming the next Elden Lord – and was driven mad in the process. Elden Ring movie director Alex Garland proves he's the perfect pick for the adaptation after schooling an interviewer on one of the game's toughest bosses

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Elden Ring movie director Alex Garland once again proves his Tarnished credentials as he begins his seventh playthrough – and starts dishing out tips mid-interview on one of the game's toughest bosses. When asked by IGN whether he's had trouble beating any bosses in The Lands Between, the interviewer namechecked Starscourge Radahn – an infamous roadblock before players can reach the Eternal City of Nekron – as a particularly troublesome foe. Garland, though, didn't agree: "I thought Radahn was quite easy," the director said, spoken like a man who didn't have to do with pre-nerf Radahn. "As long as you sort of activated the people who can assist you in that fight, they get on with that fight… they take off half his [HP] and you finish him off. It's all about activating those little summon signs dotted around." Garland added, "No, it's Melania who's the tough one." Hardy players will know all-too-well about the grueling two-phase fight, first in her Blade of Miquella form and against the Goddess of Rot. The director confirmed once more that he's now on his seventh playthrough of Elden Ring, with plenty of flasks to heal and – most important – a "cool sword." On the method behind his madness, Garland explained, "I just throw myself at them again and again. That's the technique that I learned with Dark Souls; it's not that you get better, it's more like monkeys and typewriters. You just keep doing it and eventually, one day, they're dead." The currently undated Elden Ring movie is set to be written and directed by Garland, with George R.R. Martin serving as producer (and already giving the helmer the thumbs up). Heartstopper actor Kit Connor has been linked to a lead role, but no casting has yet been officially announced.
