Researchers develop game-changing tool to predict deadly natural disasters: 'Of paramount importance'
A recent study published in the Water Resources Research journal discussed using a new deep learning framework — known as Long Short-Term Memory Station Approximated Models, or LSTM-SAM — to predict the state of water levels during extreme weather events, in order to better forewarn and evacuate nearby civilians. With Atlantic hurricane seasons lending themselves to more frequent and intense storm surges over the past decade, the impact of today's hurricanes could prove devastating for individuals and homes that aren't prepared. In particular, the coastal flooding associated with many hurricanes in the Southern U.S. has a history of endangering lives, buildings, and ecosystems. Led by environmental engineering Ph.D. candidate Samuel Daramola, the researchers used a "transfer learning" technique to quickly and accurately make predictions with LSTM-SAM. While conventional storm prediction models rely on large bodies of weather and ocean data that are inefficient and expensive to assemble, LSTM-SAM estimates flood levels based on broader flood patterns recorded in the past. One unique appeal of LSTM-SAM, per news, is the fact that accurate, high-efficiency storm predictions no longer need to be limited geographically to regions that have access to powerful data-processing facilities. Since LSTM-SAM bases its predictions on storm-flood patterns as a whole, the technology isn't locale-specific and can be applied to regions with minimal prior storm data. "Other studies have relied on repetitive patterns in the training data," Daramola told "Our approach is different. We highlight extreme changes in water levels during training, which helps the model better recognize important patterns and perform more reliably in those areas." More Atlantic hurricanes than ever are making landfall, which means the devastation wreaked by these storms cannot be understated. In fact, according to a 2023 report by the Front Page, rainfall flooding was responsible for more than half of the casualties caused by tropical cyclones. "The need for reliable flood prediction frameworks is of paramount importance," continued. "Advanced deep learning tools like LSTM-SAM could become essential in helping coastal communities prepare for the new normal, opening the door to smarter, faster, and more accessible flood predictions associated with tropical cyclones." Front Page's former trainer Geoff Duryea has concerns over the gelding backing up in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap
It can be revealed that Geoff Duryea, the former trainer of two-time The Kosciuszko champion Front Page, and his son Paul were two of the owners who voted against the veteran gelding running in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap because of the short turnaround between races. The Matt Dale -trained Front Page scored a ticket into the $3m Stradbroke with his thrilling victory in last Saturday's Group 2 Moreton Cup (1200m) at Eagle Farm. 'I voted no,' said 73-year-old Geoff Duryea, who bred and trained Front Page until handing the reins to Dale in mid-2023. 'Our vision was originally to take him up there (to Brisbane), run him in that big race (the Moreton Cup), give him a month off and then head towards the Kosciuszko again. 'We got outvoted but that's the way it goes.' Duryea said it was the first time the ownership group had been split over the direction of Front Page, which had stress fracture problems as a youngster. 'We've gone six years without a disagreement because he had a fair few issues when he was young so we've had to nurse him a fair bit before he matured properly,' Duryea said. 'It's the first time we've ever had a vote on where he's going to run. 'He's more than repaid us for our patience. I hope like hell he puts his boof-head out and wins the Stradbroke.' The owners had to pay a $90,000 late entry fee to get Front Page into the Stradbroke, where Thornton will ride at 52.5kg. 'He's absolutely eating everything up every feed, he's bright, happy and very sound,' trainer Matt Dale said on Wednesday. 'The decision was made based on that and a favourable weather forecast.' But not everyone was on board to race the winner of more than $3.5m in prizemoney in Queensland's premier race. 'I was a 'no',' part-owner and Geoff's son Paul Duryea said. 'The seven-day backup, which we've never done with him, and the fact that the Stradbroke was never on the radar. The 1400m on a quick back-up in a Group 1 (was another concern). 'Throughout his whole life we've always put him first, hence why he's only had 29 starts. 'It's never been about the money for us, it's always been about trying to find the right race that we think he can win. 'Everyone's super proud of what he's done. 'I've always had the Stradbroke in the back of my mind, this was a low percentage play to try to get him into the race. But I wanted to see him back winning. 'Ryan put him into a good position, and we made a subtle gear change with the winkers going on, which had him focused a touch better. 'He's a really nice horse, you saw how well he paraded today. He looks fantastic and he's still on the way up. 'That will have brought him on nicely. If we don't get into the Stradbroke then you might see him in the Wayne Wilson Mile instead.' In the earlier Queensland Day Stakes, $23 roughie Cosmic Fire won the Listed 1200m race ahead of Gerringong ($4) and topweight Coleman ($9) for trainer Billy Healey. 'He's just so honest and he continues to put up a fight every time we send him around,' Healey said 'He's had not much luck a few times but he's a horse who really put me on the map the last 12 months so I owe a lot to him.'
