Council of Arab Interior Ministers calls for enhanced traffic awareness to combat road accidents
TUNIS, July 16 (KUNA) – The Secretary General of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, Mohammad Koman, has urged for a concerted effort to enhance traffic awareness across Arab nations as a key measure to reduce road accidents and improve road safety. His remarks came during the opening of the 21st Arab Conference of Heads of Traffic Departments, which is currently being chaired by Kuwait. Speaking at the event, Koman emphasized that the majority of traffic accidents are caused by human error, with a lack of awareness regarding the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations. He stressed the critical role of awareness campaigns in mitigating this issue, which continues to plague Arab roads. "We must focus on enhancing traffic awareness and adopting modern, smart systems to educate the public about road safety," Koman said, highlighting the necessity of proactive efforts to reduce traffic-related incidents. The conference, which brings together traffic department heads from across Arab countries, is discussing several key topics, including the development of an Arab Traffic Analytical Database, the introduction of the Smart Traffic Awareness System (MetaHabe), and the exchange of best practices in traffic safety, regulation, and accident prevention. Koman specifically pointed to the establishment of the Arab Traffic Analytical Database as an essential step in improving traffic safety. This initiative, he explained, would provide vital data on various traffic-related issues, thereby enabling the adoption of more effective measures to curb road accidents. He called on member states to contribute valuable data and statistics on traffic incidents to enrich the database. Another notable subject at the conference was the MetaHabe system, a smart traffic awareness initiative already implemented by the Fujairah Police in the United Arab Emirates. Koman praised the system for its success, especially after it secured second place in the prestigious Prince Naif Award for Arab Security under the pioneering security programs category. This system serves as a prime example of how technology can be leveraged to improve road safety. The conference, hosted by Kuwait, sees the participation of traffic department heads and their representatives from Arab nations, along with officials from the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences. The Kuwaiti delegation is led by Brigadier General Munif Al-Mutairi, Colonel Yousef Al-Haddad, and First Lieutenant Nawaf Al-Mutairi, who are part of the General Traffic Department in Kuwait. As the conference progresses, it is clear that the collective aim is to enhance cooperation among Arab countries to combat road accidents through innovation, data-driven strategies, and awareness-raising efforts.

UAE summer: Fujairah Police warn parents against leaving kids unattended in vehicles
Fujairah Police launched a new traffic awareness campaign urging parents and guardians never to leave children alone inside vehicles — a move prompted by growing concerns over child safety during the summer months. The initiative, titled Your Children Are Your Responsibility – Don't Leave Them in the Vehicle Unattended, is part of the Ministry of Interior's third-quarter national safety drive, Summer Without Accidents. It addresses the serious risks children face when left unattended in parked cars, including suffocation and heatstroke due to rapidly rising interior temperatures — especially in the UAE's extreme summer heat. The goal is to promote a sense of community responsibility in preventing such accidents and to help achieve the highest levels of safety and protection for all, especially children, according to the authority. Colonel Saleh Mohammed Abdullah Al Dhanhani, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Fujairah Police, stressed that the campaign's core message is to raise awareness among parents and drivers about the importance of never leaving children alone in vehicles under any circumstances. He also stressed the importance of following safety guidelines and complying with traffic laws, noting that the responsibility for protecting children is a shared one — starting with families and extending to all segments of society. Al-Dhanhani added that the department is committed to using a variety of awareness tools, most notably field messages and electronic flyers, in addition to collaborating with media outlets to disseminate warning messages. Dubai also highlighted the grave danger of leaving children unattended inside vehicles, warning that this behaviour can result in suffocation and death within minutes. In the UAE, under Article 35 of the Wadeema Law, leaving children unattended in vehicles is a punishable offence. Depending on the severity and circumstances, offenders may face a fine of up to Dh5,000 and/or imprisonment. In cases involving endangerment to life and safety, penalties can rise to Dh10,000 and/or jail time, based on the judge's discretion.

Fujairah road plays Beethoven: 7 other countries that have musical roads
Drivers on Fujairah's Sheikh Khalifa Street are being surprised by a one-of-kind musical experience. As they drive over a certain stretch of the road, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony plays, making it a new adventure for motorists in the UAE to try. The rumble strips, carefully engineered into the road surface just before the Fujairah Police Headquarters, produce the classical music piece when driven over at a steady pace. However, musical roads aren't a new concept. Invented in Denmark, these melody roads have become popular in many parts of the world. Here are some well-known ones: Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. The Asphaltophone The first one in the world, called the Asphaltophone, was built in October 1995 in Gylling, Denmark, by Danish artists Steen Krarup Jensen and Jakob Freud-Magnus. In the clip below, the Asphaltophone is shown after 90 seconds. Second musical road in France The world's second musical road was made in 2000 in Villepinte, Sien-Saint-Denis, France. The road seems to have been paved over just two years later, but some claim that it can still be heard when driving on the road. USA's first America's first musical road was built in 2008 — in Avenue K, Lancaster, California. Called the Civic Musical Road, a quarter-mile stretch was designed to play the finale of the 'William Tell Overture' when driven over at a certain speed. However, due to complaints from residents about the noise created by the road, it was moved two miles out of town onto Avenue G, where it still sits today. Another musical road in the US exists in New Mexico, that plays 'America the Beautiful' to get cars to slow down on a section of Route 66 between Albuquerque and Tijeras. 30 musical roads in Japan! Japan seems to be the most enthusiastic about singing roads. In 2007, a man named Shizuo Shinoda accidentally scraped some markings into a road with a bulldozer before driving over them, realizing they could create different musical tones. There are now at least thirty musical roads in Japan today, with some playing the theme song from the anime Neon Genesis Evagelion and the song 'Always with Me' from the film 'Spirited 'Away'. To prevent drivers from dozing off Several roads in South Korea have installed musical grooves to get motorists to pay attention. The Singing Road close to Anyang, Gyeonggi, created using grooves cut into the ground, plays a version of the nursery rhyme 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. Accident prevention Indonesia too installed a melody road to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The road, along the Ngawi-Kertosono section of the Solo-Kertosono Toll Road in Java, plays the first six notes of 'Happy Birthday to You' when driven over at the correct speed. In memory Hungary installed a musical road in 2019 as a tribute to László Bódi (stage name Cipő), lead singer from the band Republic. When going on the side of the road, an approximately 30-second snippet of their song '67-es út (Road 67)' plays. Listen to the melody below:
