Libyan Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqeela Saleh, has officially inaugurated several major development projects in Derna, completed by the Fund for the Development and Reconstruction of Libya, in accordance with international standards. The ceremony was attended by Second Deputy Speaker Misbah Douma, members of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister of the Libyan Government-designate Osama Hammad, Director-General of the Development and Reconstruction Fund Belgasem Haftar, and Second Deputy Head of the High Council of State Omar Al-Obaidi. A number of other state officials and members of the High Council of State were also present. According to Parliament Spokesman Abdullah Blehiq, the key project unveiled was the dual-lane eastern entrance road to the city, known as 'Aqabat Al-Fattaih,' which has now been expanded and upgraded to meet modern specifications. In a boost to the city's cultural and artistic life, officials also inaugurated the National Theatre and the King Idris I Library, following comprehensive renovation works. These landmarks, restored to modern standards, were reopened in the presence of a distinguished group of artists, writers, and intellectuals, highlighting Derna's historic status as a cultural hub. Additionally, the newly renovated headquarters of the Internal Security Agency – Derna Branch – was inaugurated. The ceremony was attended by the agency's chief, Major General Osama Al-Darsi, and included the graduation of a new cohort of recruits. This development is seen as a significant step in reinforcing local security and aligning with Derna's ongoing urban and developmental revival. These projects are part of broader efforts to restore essential infrastructure and public institutions in Derna, a city that has long been a symbol of resilience and cultural pride in eastern Libya. Libyan PM & Belgasem Haftar Inaugurate Derna Park
Libyan Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hammad inaugurated the new Derna Recreational Park on Saturday evening, accompanied by Belgasem Haftar, Director-General of the Fund for the Development and Reconstruction of Libya, and Deputy Prime Minister Ali Al-Qatrani. The opening ceremony, held in the heart of Derna, was attended by members of the House of Representatives, ministers, senior officials, as well as military and security leaders. A large crowd of local residents also took part in the festivities, celebrating a new chapter in the city's recovery and development. The park is part of a broader series of development projects aimed at revitalising Derna's infrastructure and enhancing quality of life for its residents. Officials say the recreational park serves as a modern, inclusive urban space designed for families and children, combining leisure with urban renewal. The project reflects a comprehensive vision for rebuilding the city following the devastation it has endured in recent years. The new park is seen as a landmark of hope and resilience, contributing to the city's transformation into a livable, vibrant community. Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations. Libya's economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya's economy. The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions. The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition. Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges. Tags: Belgasem HaftarDernalibyaOsama Hammad
