UFC Cuts Ties With Undefeated Fighter After Huge Weight Miss

Welterweight Christopher Ewert found this out the hard way. Ewert was supposed to step in to face Jackson McVey on the UFC 317 undercard. However, Ewert weighed in 10 pounds over the 170-pound limit. The massive weight miss led to the promotion dropping him immediately. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 25: Chris Ewert poses for a portrait during a UFC photo session on June ... (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC CEO Dana White and his leadership group aren't going to tolerate things like this from a fighter making their promotional debut—unless they've already built up a name, a reputation, and a rabid fanbase that travels well. That's not the case with Ewert. He has been impressive during his career. He's a perfect 7-0, most recently having won back-to-back fights with Fury FC. Still, it's likely the UFC wasn't overjoyed with Ewert's weight miss resulting in yet another fight being pulled from the International Fight Week show. The damage here is twofold. Not only did Ewert lose what could've been a life-changing opportunity, but he also disrupted McVey's momentum. McVey is also an undefeated prospect who has proven to be a KO artist. He was originally supposed to face Sedriques Dumas, but the latter was forced to pull out because he was unable to get authorities to remove an ankle monitor in time to participate in fight week activities. Ewert was the replacement fighter. He was pulled from a planned fight on the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series to fight McVey. Fans may be losers in this one too. McVey has star potential. The 6-foot-4 26-year-old has a 100 percent finish rate with knockouts in every professional fight. UFC fans will have to wait to see him in the Octagon. It's possible Ewert could still land on DWCS, but the huge weight miss is a bad look for his first UFC event. For what it's worth, Ewert's camp says they tried to hard to make the weight, but couldn't get over the finish line. As it is, here is a look at the UFC 317 card set for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 28. UFC Fight Card Main Card Prelims Be on the lookout for post-event coverage as Topuria and Oliveira have an opportunity to add another layer to their Hall-of-Fame resumes. It's a top-heavy show, but we're for it.

UFC 317 fighter gets cut from promotion after missing weight by 10 pounds at official weigh-ins

Christopher Ewert missed weight by a staggering 10 pounds ahead of UFC 317 on Saturday night. The massive miss resulted in his welterweight bout with fellow UFC debutant Jackson McVey being canceled. During Friday's "UFC 3017 Weigh-In Show," the broadcast team announced that Ewert missed by a significant margin and has been cut from the promotion before setting foot in the Octagon. Despite the fight getting scratched, McVey weighed in at 185 pounds to earn his show money. Advertisement Ewert looked to stay undefeated in his UFC debut, coming in with an undefeated 7-0 record before the cancellation. "El Tanke" knocked out five of his opponents and most recently fought twice in Fury FC before signing with the UFC. McVey, now waiting for his first UFC fight, finished all six of his opponents as a pro with three knockouts and three submissions. All of his victories came in the first round, with five coming under a minute and 28 seconds. McVey had four of his six fights in LFA and two in Shamrock FC. UFC 317 will culminate International Fight Week from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card features two title bouts, with Alexandre Pantoja looking for his fourth title defense against Kai Kara-France. Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria will fight for the vacant lightweight title in the main event. 'El Tanke' mentality: Christopher Ewert doesn't give a damn UFC debut on four days' notice

A post shared by Javier Torres (@javiertorresofficialmma) What a 24 hours it was for Christopher Ewert. On Monday, he wasn't on the UFC roster and was instead preparing for a Dana White's Contender Series bout vs. Yuri Panferov set for August. At 1:30 p.m. local time in Arizona, Ewert's manager and coach Javier Torres' phone rang. On Tuesday, he's on a plane to Las Vegas. He'll circumvent the tryout fight and enter the promotion directly on one of the biggest cards of the year, UFC 317. "I was a little surprised because it was four days' notice," Ewert told MMA Junkie through a Spanish-language interpreter. "Like I've told all my coaches, I'm always prepared to fight – today, tomorrow, any time. It doesn't matter for me. I'm calm, even when there's a big storm. ... I've been prepared all my life for this moment. I will take this victory." Chile's Ewert (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has been on the UFC radar for some time, but travel issues nixed two short-notice UFC offers. With his paperwork obtained, the third time was the charm. Ewert will face fellow promotional newcomer Jackson McVey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in a middleweight bout that kicks off the card Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. "I've been ready to represent my country in the UFC for a long time," Ewert said. "I've been waiting for this, to show why Chile is one of the best." Ewert, 31, is a main training partner of rising heavyweight contender Waldo Cortes-Acosta. He has five finishes (all knockouts) in seven pro bouts and has won back-to-back fights for Fury FC. The who, the what, the where, and the when has never mattered to Ewert. He even recently took a boxing match for Team Combat League in the midst of his DWCS training camp. It's always been about the process. With the right coaching, and the experience of cross-training with Alex Pereira among others, Ewert is confident he'll make himself a household name in short order. "Dana White will love it. Everybody will love it. When I get in the cage, I'm going to exchange. I want to do that. That's what Dana White loves, and I'm going to do that. I'm going to be the Tank, 'El Tanke,' and leave everything in the cage. Stand and bang. ... I don't care. I can go three rounds or one round or 10 seconds. I come to win the fight no matter what. I'm a very exciting fighter and I have different styles. I can show I can also grapple. I can do everything. I've prepared with coach Javier Torres and my team from Chile, too. I'll come to win."

Newcomer saves UFC on ESPN 68 bout on three days' notice

Newcomer saves UFC on ESPN 68 bout on three days' notice It's UFC on ESPN 68 fight week, and the lineup has been slightly tweaked days out from the event. With MarQuel Mederos ill and out of Saturday's event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, the promotion has signed Fury FC standout Michael Aswell to face Bolaji Oki on short notice, it announced Wednesday. Aswell (10-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) appeared on Dana White's Contender Series in 2024. Though he lost to Bogdan Grad by split decision, the bout was such a back-and-forth battle that it landed Aswell on the promotion's short-notice call-up list. Aswell has won three of his most recent four and previously held the Fury FC featherweight title. Oki (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) aims to bounce back from a bizarre submission loss to Chris Duncan in September. The loss came after a successful promotional debut when he defeated Timmy Cuamba by split decision. UFC on ESPN 68 lineup now includes: MAIN CARD (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET) Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber Mateusz Gamrot vs. Ludovit Klein Dustin Jacoby vs. Bruno Lopes Ramiz Brahimaj vs. Billy Ray Goff Dusko Todorovic vs. Zachary Reese PRELIMINARY CARD (ESPN+, 4 p.m. ET)
