India, US close to finalising jet engine co-production deal for fighter aircraft
India and the United States are moving closer to finalising the much-anticipated deal for the co-production of GE-414 jet engines, defence officials informed India agreement is expected to be signed by the end of this financial year. New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): In a significant development, India on Monday received the second GE-404 engine from the US for the LCA Mark 1A fighter jet aircraft programme, Defence officials said. The engine has been received by the Public sector firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and it is expected to receive 12 more GE-404 engines by the end of this financial year. The engines will be fitted on the LCA Mark 1A fighter jets. The delivery of the engines had been delayed by more than a year due to supply chain issues faced by the American engine manufacturing firm. Indian Air Force has placed orders for 83 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets and a proposal to buy 97 more of these planes is at an advanced stage after the clearance from the Defence Ministry, officials said. Earlier this year, GE Aerospace delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to HAL for the Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A fighter jet. The HAL is planning to integrate the engines with the Mark1A fighters and supply over 10 of these planes to IAF. Recently, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister PK Misra had visited the HAL facilities in Bengaluru and received the LCA Mark 2 project along with the Mark 1A programme. The LCA Mark 2 project is expected to be the replacement for the aging fleet of Mirage 2000, Jaguar and MiG-29 aircraft around the year 2035. More than Rs 9000 Crore have been sanctioned for the development of LCA Mk 2, an updated and more lethal version of LCA Tejas. To further promote indigenisation, including of the aircraft engine, Transfer of Technology for manufacturing of the GE engine in India was negotiated with GE during Prime Minister's visit to the US in June 2023. New Delhi: The production of India's indigenous fighter jet Tejas Mark-1A is set to gain momentum with the arrival of the GE-404 jet engine from the United States. This marks the second engine received from American manufacturer General Electric for the Tejas Mark-1A programme. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the state-run aerospace company responsible for manufacturing the Tejas, is expected to receive a total of 12 GE-404 engines by the end of the current financial year. These engines will power the Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets, which have been ordered by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IAF has placed an order for 83 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft, as it looks to strengthen its depleting fleet with homegrown fighter jets. The Air Force currently operates two squadrons of the earlier Mark-1 variant, stationed at the Sulur Airbase in Tamil Nadu. Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh has previously expressed concern over the delay in the delivery of the Mark-1A jets, citing the non-availability of engines as a key issue. HAL, too, acknowledged the delay and attributed it to the wait for imported engines. Now, with engine supplies resuming, deliveries of the new aircraft are expected to begin soon. The Mark-1A variant, an upgraded version of the LCA Tejas, is a key part of India's push for self-reliance in defence under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. The Ministry of Defence is working to make the LCA project the backbone of the Air Force, with plans underway to raise additional squadrons based on the aircraft. The Centre has already approved the procurement of 83 Mark-1A jets, with a proposal for 97 more under consideration. In total, 220 LCA Tejas aircraft are expected to gradually replace the ageing MiG-21, MiG-29, and Mirage fighters in the IAF fleet. Additionally, the government has greenlighted the development of the LCA Mark-2, also referred to as the Medium Weight Fighter, further expanding the indigenous fighter jet programme.

The defence firm expects engine supplies to stabilise in the next financial year. Full-scale production is projected to touch 30 aircraft per year by 2026–27, with support from both public and private industry partners.
