'Turun Anwar' rally alone won't dethrone PMX but a successful aftermath can rub off on MPs to vote him out'

THE PAS-inspired Turun Anwar campaign which is currently underway at state level prior to taking shape this Saturday (July 26) at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur will not be able bring down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on its own. Taking the cue from PMX who has stated that he will not step down because he did not steal money belonging to the rakyat, veteran journalist and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin reckoned that pending the 16th General Election (GE16), 'the only way to make him fall is by authentically proving that there is support from at least 112 MPs'. 'The Turun Anwar tour is more relevant to his opponents in preparation for the GE which must be held before Feb 17, 2028,' the national journalism laureate penned on his Facebook page. 'But if the rallies, protests and marches cause his supporters in the Parliament to defect, the possibility that he (PMX) will lose his majority and be forced to resign cannot be ruled out.' At any rate, Kadir does not expect PMX to retaliate by taking harsh action against the perpetrators and detractors, be they the opposition or even former PKR deputy president and ex-economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's faction. 'Harsh action could further damage PMX's image as a reformist while increasing public sympathy and support for the opposition,' opined Kadir who is perceived by Madani backers to be a loyalist to twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is now an adviser of Perikatan Nasional (PN). 'However, this does not mean that state apparatuses such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will not act'. The former editor-in-chief of mainstream New Straits Times further corrected public misconception that PMX on his own did not win the 2022 national polls through the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition which he helms as chairman. 'The PH he led didn't have enough seats to form a government. Once again, UMNO defected by giving support to PH and PMX. As a result, PMX has enough seats to form a government and become PM,' recounted Kadir. 'UMNO which campaigned on the slogan 'No Bersatu, no Anwar, no DAP' went on to win the Deputy PM post following which the DPM (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was further rewarded with DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) on 47 prima facie cases.' – July 21, 2025 Main image credit: PAS Johor/Facebook

Asyraf Wajdi Urges UMNO To End 'Satay Politics' To Regain Support In GE16

BUKIT GANTANG, July 20 (Bernama) -- UMNO members at all levels must immediately put an end to the culture of 'satay politics' if the party wants to regain its strength and public support in the 16th General Election (GE16), said UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Using the analogy of satay politics to describe the internal divisions that have plagued UMNO, Asyraf Wajdi stressed that such a culture is among the key factors weakening the party. 'I emphasised to the delegates that unity is fundamental. We must avoid the culture of stoking tensions, forming factions within the party, and fuelling conflict among leaders and members,' he said.

Mukhriz says Pejuang open to new Opposition alliance, may consider electoral pact with Perikatan in GE16

SHAH ALAM, July 20 — Parti Pejuang Tanahair has reportedly expressed openness to the formation of an Opposition alliance, following the meeting chaired by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Its president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir also said yesterday that Pejuang may consider an electoral pact with Perikatan Nasional (PN) to avoid clashes and overlapping seats in the 16th general election (GE16). 'For example, Pejuang withdrew from defending four seats — Jitra and Anak Bukit in Kedah, and Jeram and Batang Kali in Selangor — which ultimately led to victories for PN. 'At the time, we handed over those seats entirely to PN and campaigned for them to ensure they won. And it worked,' he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia. Pejuang previously formed its pact Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) with Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), Berjasa, and National Indian Muslim Alliance Party for the 15th general election. Mukhriz said Pejuang welcomes a dialogue with any group and has been consistent in raising issues affecting the public. He also said the party has always leaned closer to PN and participated in its programmes without feeling out of place. Despite that, Mukhriz said any potential cooperation with PN or other parties would depend on current political developments. 'If there is alignment in our positions, then cooperation is possible. The idea of joining PN as a coalition member is still open for discussion,' he said. 'In our meeting yesterday, no final decision was made on the form of collaboration that could be established,' he added, referring to the one called by Muhyiddin. Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin had on Friday said he held a meeting with leaders of several opposition parties to discuss forming a coalition focused on national interests. Muhyiddin said the proposed coalition aims to provide a united opposition front and reinforce the check and balance function in and out of Parliament. PN component parties Gerakan and Malaysian Indian People's Party were present — but not PAS. Other parties represented included Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), People's Progressive Party, Berjasa, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai), and Malaysian Advancement Party.

Mixed thoughts prevail among Malays, non-Malays to PMX's unreadiness to step down

SUCH seems to be the scenario if comments to two separate NST Online Facebook postings entitled Anwar: I Will Not Step Down and ' I Will Not Step Down' – PM Anwar on Calls for His Resignation can be translated into a poll. While the Malays tend to believe that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be shown the exit door soonest for having failed to live up with expectations, non-Malays feel that PMX should at least be allowed to complete his full term till Malaysians go to the national polls again come the 16th General Election (GE16). The mixed reaction follows PMX's reiteration that he would not step down from his post despite calls for him to do so by the opposition. ' Insya Allah , I will not step down. If I steal the people's money, then they can call for me to step down. But I didn't do so,' he said in his speech at the ground-breaking ceremony of Kompleks Madani Teluk Kumbar in Penang yesterday (July 19). 'All government contracts go through an open tender process.' Added PMX who is also the Finance Minister: 'If they (detractors) have enough numbers, they can bring a vote (of no confidence). That is the way. 'They can pull support from any MPt to support them. If I lose, I will step down nicely. That is the peaceful way. 'If not, they can wait until the next election. When that will be (the general election), I haven't announced yet.' At a glance, it can be assumed that the Malays are more rebellious in their view of PMX as many belong to the opposition camp, hence are swayed by the opposition's propaganda amid the upcoming PAS-inspired 'Turun Anwar' on July 26 (Saturday). This aside, many UMNO members at the grassroots level have also grown disgruntled with their party leadership which has comprised its 'No DAP, No Anwar' stance by having forged the much chastised 'UMDAP' alliance. To make matters worse, the recent PKR central leadership polls have further split the key Pakatan Harapan (PH) party into two , namely the Damai faction of deputy president-elect Nurul Izzah Anwar and the Hiruk faction of incumbent deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Against such backdrop, it is not surprising for detractors to offer feedback like 'People hate PMX more than they hated Rosmah (alluding to wife of incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak) or 'He should step down as he failed as PM and not able to demo good role model as a leader'. On the other hand, non-Malays tend to opine that even if push comes to shove, PMX should at least be given an opportunity to helm Malaysia till GE16. Their justification ranges from there are no successor in sight, that he remains the best man for the job or in short, they still have faith in his quest to combat corruption. At the end of the day, what is sure is that PMX has 29 months on his side to initiate a turnaround that would restore the faith of Malaysians in him after a slew of miscalculations that have led to a build-up of trust deficit in him and his Madani administration . The clock ticking. – July 20, 2025

PAS claims Pahang is set to vote for PN in the next GE

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man claims public support in Pahang for PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN) has significantly increased, indicating voters are ready to choose PN as the state government in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). 'This development is not only evident from the encouraging attendance at various grassroots programmes, but it is also supported by independent studies and on-the-ground observations. 'Moreover, we can see that the people are increasingly rejecting any explanations or statements by the government on various issues,' he said in a statement. The Cheka assemblyman Tuan Ibrahim also claims young voters, civil servants, and rural communities are increasingly rejecting the UMNO-Pakatan Harapan state government, forcing it to work harder to prove its competence. Backing the claims by the PAS leader, Pahang PAS information chief Ustaz Aireroshairi Roslan, stressed that UMNO must mentally prepare to become the opposition after the GE16, following the increasing public support for PAS from GE13 to GE15. He also said the 'PAS Leads Pahang' slogan taunted as mere rhetoric by UMNO shows that the ruling party is still in denial and refuses to accept the reality of the changing political landscape in the state. 'The strong public response to this tagline proves that the people are ready for a leadership change that is cleaner and more trustworthy,' he said in a statement, adding that UMNO is riddled with internal crises and leadership turmoil while PAS has strengthened party machinery. On the other hand, he also said the cooperation between DAP and Umno is now a heavy liability for the Malay party. 'How can UMNO claim to fight for the Malay agenda when they are willing to collaborate with a party that has always opposed the special position of the Malays?' he questioned. — July 19, 2025 Main photo credit: Bernama
