Disabled baker scammed of over RM500,000 in fake TikTok job offer
GEORGE TOWN, July 20 — A disabled baker in Penang has lost more than RM500,000 after falling for a bogus job offer advertised on TikTok, according to acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the incident began in early December last year when the 45-year-old man was first contacted via WhatsApp in early December last year by a woman who claimed to offer a lucrative job selling children's toys through the platform. 'He was promised profits of 10 to 15 per cent and was asked to make payments to cover the cost of goods allegedly ordered by customers,' he said in a statement last night. The victim proceeded to make 41 cash deposit transactions amounting to RM523,350 into five different bank accounts between Dec 18, 2024, and July 14, 2025. Despite repeated payments, the promised returns never materialised, and the suspect continued requesting additional funds under the guise of job-related expenses. The victim lodged a report yesterday at the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) upon realising he had been scammed, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Penang's Mutiara LRT Line kicks off with road widening, utility works planned at multiple locations
GEORGE TOWN, July 17 — Construction works on the Mutiara Line LRT project here are set to begin following the issuance of a notice to commence work. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the notice was issued on July 15 by MRT Corporation (MRTC) to the main civil contractor, SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd. 'With this, the construction process will begin as planned, including utility relocation, road widening, piling works, and site establishment at all locations along the Mutiara Line alignment that have obtained approval from the relevant authorities,' he said in a statement today. He said the state is now awaiting the tender results for the appointment of a turnkey contractor for the CMC2 package, which covers the stretch from Macallum to Penang Sentral, as well as the rail systems package for the Mutiara Line. Chow added that there have been several key developments in the project, including the groundbreaking ceremony, the appointment of SRS as the main civil contractor for the CMC1 package in January, and the issuance of the Notice to Proceed to SRS. 'The state will be announcing the setting up of a strategic communication platform and feedback channel for all ongoing and upcoming mega projects to allow the public to access information and for further engagement,' he said. He called on all parties, especially the public, to give their full cooperation throughout the implementation of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2031.

South Korean man gets three months' jail for overstaying in Malaysia
GEORGE TOWN, July 11 — A South Korean man was sentenced to three months in jail by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to overstaying his permitted time in Malaysia. Jeon Eunjin, 55, entered the plea after the charge was read in English before Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi. The sentence is effective from his arrest on June 30. According to the charge sheet, Jeon, a construction worker in South Korea, remained in Malaysia without valid reason after his 90-day social visit pass expired on February 10. He was accused of committing the offence at the Criminal Investigation Division office of the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) at 12.30pm on June 30. Jeon was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM10,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. Earlier, National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Nur Adilla Zaharuddin appealed for a minimal fine, citing that Jeon is married with two children and had saved court time and cost by pleading guilty. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Danial Amir Saari, however, urged the court to impose a sentence proportionate to the offence. In a separate charge heard in the same courtroom, Jeon was also fined RM2,000 or six months' jail in default, after pleading guilty to lodging a false police report. He was accused of intentionally filing the report to prompt police to exercise lawful authority and open an investigation. The offence took place at 12.45pm on June 28, also at the Timur Laut IPD. Jeon was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to six months' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. — Bernama
