Does changing my car's wheel size affect the speedometer?

Q. I want to put 21in alloys on my Porsche Cayenne, replacing the 20in wheels. It occurred to me that I may have to recalibrate the speedometer and odometer to take account of the larger circumference of the tyre. Is this correct and, if so, how do I do it? GF, Renfrew A. Speedometers work by counting how many times the wheels rotate over a given time. A wheel covers a fixed distance each time it turns (the circumference) so a speedo can work out how much distance it has covered and the speed. You would think that changing the size of the wheels alters the circumference, so the speedo will be affected, but remember that what we refer to as the wheel is actually the combination of the metal wheel and the tyre. If you are moving to a larger wheel, you simply fit thinner tyres so the overall diameter and circumference stays roughly the same. • Is it worth getting my car's paintwork and upholstery treated? If the overall diameter of the new wheels is within 1 per cent of the diameter of the current ones it will make virtually no difference to your speedo and odometer. You can work this out for yourself if you're reasonably adept at basic arithmetic, although it is slightly complicated by the fact that tyres are one of the few products that mix metric and imperial measurements in their specification — tyre width is in millimetres, wheel size is in inches. If you want to do the sums, there's an example later. Thankfully, there are easier options. One is to use an online tyre-size calculator; these are available on many tyre suppliers' websites. Even simpler is to consult your owner's handbook. Without knowing the year and exact model of your Cayenne, we can't give you the right sizes, but if you don't have the handbook, go to and enter your vehicle identification number. The site will bring up the official handbook for your car and you can look up Porsche's recommended tyres sizes for different wheels. • Does a car's colour affect its resale value? As an example, we picked a 2023, petrol, 6-cylinder model. The right size for a 20in wheel, front axle, is 275/45 ZR20 whereas for the 21in wheel it's 285/40 ZR21. The first number, 275 or 285, is the width of the tyre in mm, the second is the aspect ratio, or the thickness (height) of the tyre as a percentage of the width. The number after the ZR is the wheel diameter in inches. So, for the smaller 20in wheel the tyre is 123.75mm thick and for the larger, 21in wheel the tyre is thinner, at 114mm. Convert to inches and the total diameter of the 20in fitment is 29.74in, and the 21in wheel plus tyre is 29.98in. Of course, the important figure is the overall circumference (ie the distance covered for each turn of the wheel) and to get that, multiply the diameter by π (3.142). So, the 20in set-up travels 93.44in (2,373mm) for each turn and the 21in goes for 94.17in (2,392mm). This is a difference of well under 1 per cent and will make no discernible difference to the speedo or odometer. As a comparison, it's not much more than the difference in circumference between a new tyre and one worn down to 2mm tread depth. • How can I tell how old my tyres are? One last word of caution: on many later models of Cayenne, there is a menu option that enables you to set the wheel size. This seems to give only the tyre-pressure monitoring system the right information about wheel diameter and doesn't affect the speedometer calibration. So, look in the handbook and buy the tyre size Porsche recommends for your new 21in wheels and you will still have a speedometer and odometer as accurate as with the 20in Shallcross, independent motoring expertPost your motoring questions below or send to carclinic@

GlobalFoundries to invest $16bn in semiconductor production

US-based semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries has announced a $16bn investment to enhance domestic semiconductor production. This investment will expand the company's manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities across its facilities in New York and Vermont. The investment builds upon GlobalFoundries' existing US expansion plans, which include more than $13bn to expand and modernise its New York and Vermont facilities. Additionally, the company has announced funding for its newly launched New York Advanced Packaging and Photonics Centre, the first US-based facility dedicated to silicon photonics packaging. GlobalFoundries is committing an additional $3bn to advanced research and development initiatives. These initiatives focus on packaging innovation, silicon photonics, and next-generation GaN technologies. The company is collaborating with major technology firms such as Apple, SpaceX, AMD, Qualcomm Technologies, NXP, and GM. These companies will aid GlobalFoundries in reshoring semiconductor production to the US and diversifying their global supply chains. GlobalFoundries CEO Tim Breen said: 'At GlobalFoundries, we are proud to partner with pioneering technology leaders to manufacture their chips in the United States—advancing innovation while strengthening economic and supply chain resiliency. 'The AI revolution is driving strong, durable demand for GF's technologies that enable tomorrow's datacentres – including GF's leading silicon photonics, as well as GaN for power applications. 'Meanwhile at the edge, GF's proprietary FDX technology is uniquely positioned to support AI functionality with low power consumption. With all these technologies and more manufactured right here in the US, GF is proud to play its part in accelerating America's semiconductor leadership.' In February 2024, the US awarded $1.5bn to GlobalFoundries to expand its semiconductor production as the country looks to boost its domestic chip manufacturing. Another US-based semicon co to set up project in Bengal

Kolkata: After GlobalFoundries (GF), another US-based semiconductor company — Santech Global Inc — has expressed its interest in setting up a project in Bengal, the state govt said after US Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz met Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Wednesday. Based in New Jersey, Santech Global specialises in semiconductors and nanoelectronics. "We are in consultation with the company to extend required support," an official said. He added that Santech Global setting up a project in Bengal would contribute in the creation of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in the state and open up more economic opportunities. The state govt further said GF has sought additional space to expand operations. The GF project was announced in Sept last year during a meeting between then-US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CM had earlier stated that necessary land had already been provided to GF — around 13,000 sq ft in the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) at Sector V. GF has asked for another 19,000 sq ft and the CM has assured to look into the request. On Wednesday, the CM and the US Consul discussed the GF Kolkata Power Center, set to come up in collaboration with the US. The CM said the project would be a significant achievement for the state and expressed hope that once in place, it would generate substantial employment. According to an official, the new semiconductor fabrication unit will focus on advanced sensing, communication and power electronics for national security as well as next-generation telecommunications and green energy applications. The official further said GF is a major semiconductor manufacturing company that produces microchips used in electronic devices such as smartphones, computers and cars. He added that GF would also set up a fabless centre for design and testing. Officials said semiconductor units in Bengal would aid research and development in chip manufacturing, and cause major leaps in the fields of Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and data centres.

'It's painful': NRL fans say same thing as Ray Warren detail laid bare during Origin

The quality of the Channel 9 commentary team has once again come under fire during State of Origin 1 on Wednesday night, and fans couldn't help but feel it's never been the same since Ray Warren retired. For many NRL fans, State of Origin and the grand final are the only times throughout the season that they watch Channel 9 as opposed to Fox League. Many would prefer to pay up and hear the Fox League commentary crew during games, but State of Origin and the grand final are exclusively on Channel 9. For those who only watch Nine four times a year, it can be a rather grating experience. Andrew Johns and Cameron Smith usually come in for plenty of criticism, and don't typically try to hide their bias towards NSW and Queensland respectively. On Wednesday night it was no different, with many expressing some brutal opinions about the NRL legends on social media. There was an awkward moment during the game when lead caller Mat Thompson used the word "superfluous", and Johns didn't appear to know what it meant. 'Err, excuse me? A what?" he replied. As for Thompson, the play-by-play caller has done a commendable job since the retirement of legendary predecessor Warren. But the general consensus is Channel 9 have never been able to fill the void left by the great man. Journalist Peter Lang wrote on social media on Wednesday night: "I don't want to be overly critical of Channel 9's State of Origin commentator Mat Thompson last night…but geeze I miss 'Rabs'. Ray Warren was Origin." However a fan responded: "Be over critical. It's diabolical. Fox Sports need to have the rights. 9 is beyond bad in all aspects." Another wrote: "I thought Matt Thompson was alright. He needs someone in there with him with a bit of energy. Andrew Johns ain't that person." Another commented: "I watched the game mostly on mute, it's painful…" While a fourth wrote: "It was awful. I have my whinges about Foxtel, but sweet jesus, they are miles ahead of 9." I watched the game mostly on mute it's painful… — Dennis Feher (@DrDennisFeher) May 29, 2025 They need to let Fox get rights to showing it live. I watched their coverage for a bit after the game and oh my the quality difference is crazy. — Oliver (@OliverMulqueen3) May 28, 2025 @NRL You really need to allow @FOXNRL to broadcast the SOO, WSOO & GF at the same time channel 9 does.@NRLonNine are killing the NRL. Tonight's SOO was like watching it in a Library!! The commentary lacklustre and no passion whatsoever!Bring on @FOXNRL please!!!!Please — MARBROLAY (@marbrolay) May 28, 2025 The commentary is as bad as the game. I miss Ray Warren. #StateofOrigin — BMC (@BrianMichaelC) May 28, 2025 I get he's passionate, but Joey's bias is insufferable. — Stephen 😁 (@SJOBrien8906) May 28, 2025 Cameron Smith is certainly not impartial — 91 03 21 22 23 24 PREMIERS 🐾🏆 (@SnoogThe) May 28, 2025 On Wednesday night, many accused Smith of being too biased towards Queensland, particularly in regard to the controversial sin-binning of Brian To'o for a mid-air challenge on Xavier Coates that officials ruled was a professional foul. And Johns also copped backlash for a bizarre theory he floated about the balls being used. After Nathan Cleary missed three conversion attempts in a row, Zac Lomax replaced him but also shanked one from close range. Johns said he thought the ball sounded different when being kicked, and suggested it might have had something to do with the sponsorship logos on it. 'Even the sound of the ball when they were kicking it just sounded different," the NRL Immortal said. 'Mitchell Moses kicked one in the in-goal, he never gets that wrong. Sometimes they are a little bit fatter, maybe the graphics on the ball whether that changes it. Zac Lomax, he missed it by a mile.' RELATED: Craig Bellamy's Origin move that could come back to haunt Storm coach Trainer at centre of Origin incident unmasked as NRL great's brother Johns even put his theory to Nathan Cleary after the game. But Cleary said: 'The last one I kicked it was definitely just an F-up. But I don't know, I think I'll reflect on that and I think there was just a bit going on in my brain. 'I had so many things I wanted to do. But I've thought about being back in this arena so often and so many things I wanted to do. Sometimes you just need to calm down a bit and just go through the processes.'
