Major shakeup hits ABC's 'GMA3,' but insider says show 'not being shut down' despite chatter

"GMA3" anchors Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan both exited the ABC News program on Monday as the midday extension of "Good Morning America" undergoes another major facelift, three years after a scandalous extramarital affair put the show firmly in the zeitgeist. The departures of Pilgrim and Morgan prompted questions about the future of the program, which was already hit with layoffs this year. The Status media newsletter wrote that "ABC News is all but throwing in the towel" on the program and TV Insider published a headline bluntly asking, "Is 'GMA3' Going to Be Canceled at ABC?" However, the scandal-plagued program isn't going away anytime soon, according to a well-placed source. "The show is not being shut down," an ABC News source told Fox News Digital. "Good Morning America" executive producer Simone Swink took control of "GMA3" last year. The source pointed to a new studio and look that are more in sync with Swink's flagship "Good Morning America" as evidence that ABC is making an effort to grow the spinoff "GMA3." ABC News personalities Will Reeve, Lara Spencer, Sam Champion, Linsey Davis, James Longman, Rachel Scott, Janai Norman, Gio Benitez and Whit Johnson have all guest hosted the program in recent weeks and a similar rotation is expected to continue. "GMA3" gained national attention in 2022 when then-hosts T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach got caught up in a headline-grabbing cheating scandal. Their relationship, which began while they were both married to other people, resulted in them being benched for two months before they agreed to exit ABC. As the drama unfolded, tabloids essentially covered their every step, keeping scandalous headlines about the Disney-owned network at the forefront. At the time, ABC News insiders said the affair was brutal for the family brand that is so important to Disney, ABC News' parent company. The program has shed viewers since the cheating scandal. "GMA3" averaged 1.6 million total viewers in 2022 before the affair emerged as tabloid fodder and has since averaged 1.4 million for a 13% drop. The decline is worst among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults aged 25-54, as it has shed 24% of those critical viewers since Robach and Holmes were revealed to be more than friendly co-anchors. ABC touts "GMA3" beating CBS' "The Talk" and "NBC News Daily" when promoting the daytime program. However, "GMA3" loses to a variety of Fox News Channel's morning and daytime offerings, including "FOX & Friends," "America's Newsroom," "The Faulkner Focus," "Outnumbered," "The Story," "America Reports" and "The Will Cain Show." ABC honchos long wanted to expand "Good Morning America" to three hours, but Kelly Ripa's "Live" program rates well at 9 a.m. ET when a third hour would naturally fit. ABC began tinkering with a daytime version of "GMA" in 2018 when Michael Strahan and Sara Haines hosted "GMA Day." The program has since had several makeovers and was known as "Pandemic: What You Need to Know" during the early stages of COVID. It was eventually renamed "GMA3: What you Need to Know" and then shortened to simply "GMA3." ABC News' Almin Karamehmedovic addressed staffers about the exits of Pilgrim and Morgan. "I wanted to share that Eva Pilgrim has decided to embark on her next chapter and will be departing ABC News. She has been a wonderful member of the ABC News team for more than a decade, coming to us from ABC-owned station WPVI in Philadelphia," Karamehmedovic wrote in a memo obtained by Fox News Digital. He went on to tout Pilgrim's successes at the network and thanked her for "many years of friendship and hard work." Pilgrim was named the new host of the syndicated program "Inside Edition." Karamehmedovic also told ABC News staffers that Morgan "has decided to begin a new journey and will be departing ABC News," although it is unclear if he has another gig lined up.

Michelin-starred chef shares 2 steak recipes for summer

Chef Danny Grant joined "Good Morning America" on Wednesday to demonstrate two steak recipes that would make a perfect summertime meal. The chef and restaurant partner of Maple Hospitality Group has created menus at an array of acclaimed eateries in Chicago, Scottsdale, Dallas, Miami and Santa Barbara. Below, check out his recipes for New York strip steak and filet mignon. New York Strip Steak with Chimichurri and Summer Tomatoes Ingredients 12-ounce New York strip steak 3/4 tablespoon kosher salt 1/2 tablespoon ground coarse black pepper 2 1/4 tablespoon Maple & Ash Beefed Up Butter 1/4 tablespoon Maldon salt Marinated cherry tomatoes (recipe below) 2 tablespoons chimichurri (recipe below) Marinated Tomatoes 12-16 cherry tomatoes 1 teaspoon chopped garlic 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Chimichurri 1 1/4 cups mint 2 cups each parsley, cilantro 1 cup lemon juice 1 tablespoon red chili flakes 2 cups extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons salt 1 teaspoon pepper 3 1/2 tablespoons garlic 3 1/2 tablespoons garlic confit Directions For the chimichurri: Roughly chop the herbs (mint, parsley, cilantro) and combine them in a bowl. Add the lemon juice, chili flakes, extra-virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and confit garlic to the herbs. Season to taste with more salt and pepper if needed. For the marinated tomatoes: Slice the tomatoes and mix all the ingredients together. Let it sit for 15 minutes to marinate. Prepare the steak: Allow it to temper for 30 minutes at room temperature. Liberally season the steak with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Heat a cast-iron pan until very hot. Sear the steak for 4-5 minutes per side, or until your desired level of doneness is reached. Remove the steak from the heat and let it rest for 4-5 minutes to retain its juices. Brush the steak with beefed-up butter and garnish with Maldon salt before serving. Garnish with chimichurri and marinated tomatoes. On "GMA3," Grant prepared another steak recipe, this time using summer hot peppers and a garlic jus. Check it out below. Filet Mignon Summer Peppers & Hearth Oil Serves 2 Ingredients 6-ounce Masami California Wagyu Filet 3/4 tablespoon kosher salt 1/2 tablespoon ground coarse black pepper 2 1/4 tablespoons Hearth Oil (see recipe below) 1 tablespoon Garlic Jus (see recipe below) 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 grilled Jimmy Nardello peppers 1/4 teaspoon fresh lemon squeeze 1/4 tablespoon Maldon salt Basil, torn (garnish) Hearth Oil 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon Microplaned garlic 1/2 teaspoon rosemary, finely chopped 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes 1/4 teaspoon fresh chopped oregano 1 tablespoon kosher salt Garlic Jus 1/3-1/2 cup garlic cloves (about 18-20 cloves) 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 3/4 cups olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 1/2 tablespoons ice water Directions For the Garlic Jus: Pulse garlic and salt in a food processor until minced. Add lemon juice and pulse to combine. Drizzle about 7 tablespoons of oil very slowly from the top opening of the food processor. Add 1 tablespoon of ice water. Continue alternating 7 tablespoons of oil and 1 tablespoon of ice water until the oil is finished and the garlic sauce has thickened and increased in volume. (It should look whipped and fluffy, this should/can take around 10 minutes.) For the Hearth Oil: Combine ingredients and whisk. Prepare the steak: Allow it to temper for 30 minutes at room temperature. Liberally season the steak with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Sear/grill the steak for 3-4 minutes per side, or until your desired level of doneness is reached. Remove the steak from the heat and let it rest for 4-5 minutes to retain its juices. Brush the steak with hearth oil and garnish with Maldon salt before serving. Grill the Jimmy Nardello peppers. Season with lemon and maldon salt. Plate the two sauces, peppers and tomatoes scattered around the plate. Place filet in the middle. Garnish the plate with extra-virgin olive oil, lemon squeeze, and basil. ABC News bosses 'anxious' as top star David Muir faces competition

ABC News is unsettled by the impact of NBC Nightly News's Tom Llamas during his first month as host, an industry source has claimed. The concerns stem from Llamas, 46 — a former weekend anchor of World News Tonight — gaining ground on ABC's golden boy David Muir, 51, among younger audiences, the insider said. Llamas stepped in for longtime anchor Lester Holt early last month and has quickly closed the gap in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic, as well as among A18-49 viewers — reportedly reaching its closest point in five years. Three straight weeks of total viewer growth under Llamas have also caught the attention of ABC bosses, the source alleged. 'There is a growing concern that Muir's once-apparent successor is already showing promising signs — and it's starting to reflect in the ratings,' the insider said. Muir, who is famously private, gave a rare interview to People in late May — just days before Llamas began — a move the source also flagged. 'Between this, the disastrous Terry Moran exit, and GMA3 being completely reworked, anxiety is high at ABC,' they added. Moran was fired from the network in June after 27 years for an X post branding Donald Trump and aide Stephen Miller 'world class haters.' GMA3 — the third hour of Good Morning America — is now reportedly on the chopping block after struggling to retain viewers. Still, it's not all bad news for ABC. Despite Llamas's promising start, Muir remains the most-watched newscaster in America, with World News Tonight pulling in a far bigger overall audience and retaining dominance among younger viewers. In fact, Muir's lead over Nightly News grew between May and June — from 7.24 million to 7.308 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. NBC, by comparison, averaged 5.751 million viewers — an improvement on both the prior week and year. World News Tonight's 1.58 million-viewer lead marks its largest second-quarter advantage over NBC in 30 years. In the key 25-54 demo, Nightly News drew 840,000 viewers to Muir's 1.01 million. Nightly's five-week high in that demo suggests any battle by Llamas to overtake Muir will be an uphill one. A high-level industry insider also pushed back on suggestions that Llamas is rattling ABC News. 'The reality is World News Tonight is beating Nightly News by nearly 2 million viewers on many nights and just had the biggest June win over Nightly News in 30 years,' the source told Daily Mail. 'While NBC remains focused on their transition from Lester Holt, ABC remains focused on the news.' Still, there are signs NBC's transition is going smoothly. Llamas has avoided a drastic ratings drop since taking over from Holt, a respected veteran known for his evenhanded style. Third-place CBS, meanwhile, has suffered ratings slumps since Norah O'Donnell stepped down in January. Despite Muir's commanding lead, Llamas's show was the only evening newscast to post year-over-year and week-over-week growth in both total and demo viewers. Muir, a fixture in primetime since 2014, took over from Diane Sawyer when ABC trailed NBC — but quickly erased the gap. He's held the primetime crown for nine years, and at 51, is seen as having a long career still ahead. But Llamas, who told The Washington Post in June that he wants 'to be number one,' may be poised to shake things up. 'It's not going to happen in a month,' he admitted. ABC News declined to comment.

Good Morning America host departs with VERY mysterious note from bosses

GMA3 host DeMarco Morgan is leaving ABC News, Daily Mail can reveal. In a memo sent to staff Monday, ABC News boss Almin Karamehmedovic said Morgan 'has decided to begin a new journey,' without elaborating. Hours earlier, it was revealed that Morgan's GMA3 cohost, Eva Pilgrim, was leaving the show as well, taking over anchor duties for Inside Edition. Morgan had been noticeably absent from GMA3 in recent weeks, with his last appearance on June 13. Karamehmedovic did not specify a destination for Morgan and instead talked up his achievements. 'Earlier in his career, DeMarco worked as a correspondent and anchor at network news and various local stations in Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York before joining ABC News in 2022 based in Los Angeles,' a section of the memo read. 'He took on the role of co-anchor of GMA3 just over two years ago where throughout his reporting, his mission of telling stories of perseverance and giving back stood out.' Karamehmedovic concluded by thanking Morgan 'for his kindness and many contributions' to the network. 'His devotion to journalism and sharing with others is evident in everything he touches.' A source told the Daily Mail that the move is part of an 'evolution of the show' that has been in the works for weeks, rather than a 'shakeup.' The source said hosts from various Good Morning America teams have stepped in to guest host for weeks, after a wave of layoffs in March that left GMA3 'gutted,' Status reported at the time. An insider close to the network told the Daily Mail in April that heavy hitters Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan had all turned down offers to host GMA3, holding out for more money. The trio also feared the program had become 'toxic' following the highly publicized affair of former co-hosts TJ Holmes and Amy Robach. 'After TJ and Amy, it's a toxic hour they want no part of,' the source said. 'They are going to want a lot more money to do any extra work,' the insider added, citing layoffs and other staffers being told to do more with less. A rep at the time said ABC was in the process of 'unifying all day parts under the GMA umbrella and team, and that includes seeing all members of the extended GMA family in the third hour,' including Stephanopoulos, Roberts, and Strahan. In recent months, Morgan and Pilgrim have been joined by co-hosts like Will Reever, Ginger Zee, Rhiannon Ally, and Gio Benitez. Morgan and Pilgrim were officially tapped as replacements for disgraced co-hosts Holmes and Robach in May 2023, after the Daily Mail revealed their scandalous affair that ultimately got them fired. A former CBS affiliate reporter, Morgan had yet to host an episode from the show's new digs in Downtown Manhattan. In March, a source told the Daily Mail GMA's third hour 'isn't going anywhere' and that 'GMA3 is here to stay.' In April, an insider told the New York Post that 'GMA3 won't be there at the end of the summer.'

ABC News bosses 'anxious' as top star faces competition from handsome younger rival

ABC News is unsettled by the impact of NBC Nightly News's Tom Llamas during his first month as host, an industry source has claimed. The fears stem from the former World News Tonight weekend anchor gaining ground on ABC News golden boy David Muir, 51, among younger audiences, the insider said. Llamas, 46, stepped in for longtime host Lester Holt early last month. He has made progress in closing a gap in viewers within the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic to its closest in five years, along with the A18-49 group as well. Three straight weeks of growth under Llamas in terms of total viewers have also caught the attention of ABC News bosses, the source alleged. 'There is a growing concern that Muir's once-apparent predecessor is already showing promising signs - and it's starting to reflect in the ratings,' the source said. Muir, meanwhile, is notoriously private. He offered a rare sit-down with People in late May days before Llamas' start, the insider pointed out. 'Between this, the disastrous Terry Moran exit and GMA3 being completely reworked, anxiety is high at ABC,' the insider said. Moran was fired from ABC after 27 years in June for an X post branding Donald Trump and his aide Stephen Miller 'world class haters.' GMA3 - the third hour of ABC's Good Morning America - is now set for the ax after struggling to retain viewers. But it's not all bad news for ABC. Despite a promising start, Llamas still has a long way to go before he catches up with Muir, who is the United States' most popular newscaster. Muir's World News Tonight commands a far bigger overall audience and remains considerably more popular among younger viewers. His lead over Nightly News grew again from May and June, the new Nielsen numbers showed - from 7.24 million to 7.308 million in total viewers. NBC, meanwhile secured 5.751 million total viewers, up from last week and this time last year. World News Tonight's 1.58 million-viewer lead over NBC is its largest in a second quarter in 30 years. In the all-important 25-54 demo, Nightly News pulled in 840,000 viewers to Muir's 1.01 million. In another encouraging sign, Nightly delivered a five-week high in the A25-54 demo, suggesting any battle by Llamas to beat Muir will be an uphill one. A high-level industry insider trashed claims that Llamas is unnerving ABC bosses: 'The reality is "World News Tonight" is beating Nightly News by nearly 2 million viewers on many nights and just had the biggest June win over Nightly News in 30 years,' the source told Daily Mail. 'While NBC News remains focused on their transition from Lester Holt, ABC News remains focused on the news,' the source added. But there are signs that transition from Holt to Llamas is going well. Llamas has managed to avoid a drastic ratings drop since taking over from his predecessor, a well-liked industry veteran known for his straight-down-the-middle reporting. Third place rival CBS News has seen embarrassing slumps since its former star anchor Norah O'Donnell quit her seat in January. Despite Muir's sizable lead on both fronts, Llamas's was the only evening newscast to see grow in both total and demo viewers year-over-year and week-over-week. Muir, meanwhile, has been a primetime mainstay for 11 years. He succeeded Diane Sawyer in 2014 when World News Tonight still trailed NBC in primetime. Muir has held the primetime crown for the past three years running, after erasing that gap in a matter of years. The life-long newsman is only 51 and is seen as having a lengthy career at the top ahead of him. Llamas, however, could repeat history with another swing as he looks looks poised to expand his share of the evening news market. He told The Washington Post in June that he 'want[s] to be number one' in primetime. He conceded, however, that his goal was a lofty one. 'It's not easy,' Lamas said. 'But it's something I think we can do.' He admitted, 'It's not going to happen in a month.'
