Zion man charged with reckless homicide in crash that killed son; ‘There is absolutely no excuse for putting children … at risk'

A Zion man was under the influence of drugs and driving recklessly when he crashed his car and killed his young son in November, Lake County authorities said Tuesday. Steven McKnight Jr., 25, of the 900 block of Country Wood Drive, has been charged with aggravated DUI for having marijuana in his system and reckless homicide in the crash that killed his son, 5-year-old Sy'mere. McKnight's 2-year-old son was badly injured in the crash, police said. The charges came at the conclusion of the investigation into the Nov. 26, 2024, head-on collision on Green Bay Road, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park. Witnesses reported that McKnight was driving south on Green Bay Road at about 5 p.m. and was passing other southbound vehicles using the northbound lane. While in the wrong lane, his Chevrolet Malibu collided with a northbound GMC Sierra being driven by a Wisconsin man. McKnight suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated. Police said his 2-year-old was riding in McKnight's lap at the time of the crash. He reportedly told first responders that no one else was in the car, but his 5-year-old was later discovered beneath debris in the vehicle, police said. Sy'mere was rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead. Neither child appears to have been in a safety seat, police said. 'This crash was not an accident, it was the result of reckless, impaired driving that took the life of an innocent … child, severely injured another child, and seriously injured an uninvolved motorist who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time,' Sheriff John Idleburg said. 'There is absolutely no excuse for putting children, or anyone, at risk.' McKnight was taken into custody on July 24, and Lake County prosecutors filed to detain him until trial. That motion has been granted, authorities said.

Man charged with DUI, reckless homicide in crash that killed 5-year-old son in Lake County, Illinois

A man has been charged with driving under the influence of cannabis in a crash that killed his 5-year-old son and critically injured his 2-year-old son last year in Beach Park, Illinois. Lake County Sheriff's officials said 35-year-old Steven McKnight Jr., of Zion, has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, four counts of aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of endangering the life of a child causing death. On Nov. 26, McKnight was driving south on Green Bay Road in a Chevrolet Malibu, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park, and illegally passing other cars by driving in the northbound lanes, when he crashed head-on into an oncoming GMC Sierra, according to sheriff's police. Investigators determined McKnight was holding his 2-year-old son in his lap at the time of the crash. His 5-year-old son, Sy'mere McKnight, was in the back seat, and also was not wearing any sort of restraining device. Sy'mere was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined he died of blunt force injuries from the crash. McKnight was seriously injured, and his 2-year-old son was critically injured, but survived. The driver of the GMC was seriously injured, and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Following an investigation into the cause of the crash, police determined McKnight was driving under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash. He was arrested at his home in Zion on Thursday. According to Lake County court records, McKnight was ordered held in jail while he awaits trial. He is due back in court on Aug. 7.

MoCI recalls models of Land Rover, Range Rover, Discovery, Porsche and GMC vehicles

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in cooperation with Qatar's authorised vehicle dealerships, has announced several vehicle recalls as part of its ongoing efforts to protect consumer rights and ensure public safety. In coordination with Alfardan Premier Motors, the official Land Rover dealership in Qatar, the MoCI has recalled Land Rover Range Rover Sport models (LS) manufactured between 2005 and 2013, Discovery 3 / LR3 models (LA) from 2005 to 2009, and Discovery 4 / LR4 models (LA) from 2010 to 2016. The recall has been initiated due to a potential fault in the self-adjusting tow ball mechanism, which may gradually cease to operate properly if the tow ball is not removed when not in use, contrary to manufacturer guidelines. The MoCI has also announced the recall of Porsche Taycan vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2024. This action, carried out in cooperation with Porsche Centre Doha – Al Boraq Automobiles Co. W.L.L., follows the detection of a malfunction in the current software of the High-Voltage (HV) battery control unit. The software lacks sufficient efficiency in detecting potential voltage deviations within the battery. This recall has been registered under campaign number ARB6. Additionally, in collaboration with Mannai Trading Company W.L.L., the official GMC dealership in Qatar, the MoCI has recalled the 2022 model of the GMC Sierra. In the affected vehicles, one or more of the attachments securing the front upper grille deflector may fracture over time. If all eight attachment points break, the deflector could detach from the vehicle while in motion, potentially compromising road safety.(TNN)

GM skips EVs to expand pickup, Escalade production in Michigan

According to recent reports by the Detroit Free Press and Reuters, General Motors further revealed new plans for a key facility that was initially intended to make electric vehicles. In a statement, the automaker said that it will move production of the Cadillac Escalade luxury full-size SUV to the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, while also adding capacity for the gas-powered Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. Currently, the Escalade is produced at the Arlington Assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, alongside its mechanically related cousins, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. According to the automaker, the added Silverado and Sierra production at Orion is intended to supplement existing production capabilities in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The announcement comes about a month after General Motors announced multi-billion-dollar investment plans to support domestic auto manufacturing. On June 10, GM announced that it would invest about $4 billion over the next two years to support its U.S. manufacturing plants and efforts to produce gas and electric vehicles. Although the automaker did not specify how much money each plant would receive, it said that the $4 billion would help reconfigure facilities, including the Orion Assembly, the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, and the Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Tennessee, for future GM vehicles. Originally, Orion was set to be reconfigured for electric vehicle production; however, slowing EV demand triggered delays in restarting the plant. As a result, GM designated the Factory Zero electric vehicle plant in Detroit as the dedicated facility for manufacturing the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. Currently, the Orion assembly manufactures battery modules for full-size EV vehicles made at Factory Zero. In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, a GM spokesperson said that to keep up with customer demand, it will begin production of the gas-powered trucks and SUVs at Orion in 2027. "GM will begin production of the Cadillac Escalade, as well as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickups at Orion Assembly in early 2027 to help meet continued strong customer demand," the GM spokesperson told Freep. "GM is proud to call Michigan home, and these moves will further strengthen our manufacturing footprint." Although the details of General Motors' production decisions were announced when the automaker announced its multi-billion-dollar domestic manufacturing investment nearly a month ago, the timing could not come at a better time. Currently, the Trump administration's tariffs on vehicle imports are putting direct pressure on the auto industry, and his latest round of double-digit tariff threats is being directed at trade partners, including Mexico and South Korea, countries where the automaker makes some U.S.-market vehicles. Previously, GM indicated that these tariffs would cost the company between $4 billion and $5 billion this year, which prompted executives to revise GM's full-year earnings guidance. In addition, the recently signed "Big Beautiful Bill" contained provisions that eliminated fines for automakers failing to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules, making it easier for automakers to build more gas-powered vehicles. According to a 2023 Reuters report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) fined GM more than $128.2 million for failing to meet CAFE rules during the 2016 and 2017 model years. Pickup trucks and full-size SUVs are some of the most profitable and best-selling vehicles for General Motors. According to a slide deck on GM's website, the first half of 2025 was the best first half for both its pickups and full-size SUVs, while data seen by GM Authority shows that overall Chevrolet Silverado sales improved by 2.15%, with 283,812 of them leaving Chevy dealers from the beginning of the year. Though the Big Bill eliminates CAFE fines, it also contains provisions eliminating the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicle purchases, which could dent General Motors' Equinox EV and Blazer EV sales numbers come September.
