QuickCheck: Did Gordon Ramsay almost become a pro-footballer?
GORDON Ramsay's success has turned him into a household name, most notably known for his foul-mouthed meme-worthy rants, superb culinary skills and top-watched reality cooking shows. However, Ramsay's gastronomic empire would not have existed as it wasn't his first career choice. Did the world-famous celebrity chef almost become a world-famous football player? Verdict: TRUE Life would be a very different kind of sandwich for him if it weren't for unfortunate football injuries. They say that every cloud has a silver lining, for Ramsay, it must have been a very thick lining. At 15, a young Gordon Ramsay started his football journey at Oxford United before being spotted by a scout employed by Scotland's most titled club – the Rangers. A few years later, the aspiring footballer received an offer from the Glasgow-based club. For the uninitiated, this wasn't a small feat as the Rangers Football Club is one of the most successful and storied football teams in the world. Ramsay's path to football stardom was clear as day, but fate had other plans. In 1985, after being marked with injuries including damaged knee cartilage and torn cruciate ligament, the promising player had to end his pursuit in football. Ramsay was forced to re-think his future and went back to school, earning a degree in hotel management in 1987. And the rest was history. "I was a naturally aggressive left-back, a cut-throat tackler... You may have got past once but there was never, ever, ever a second occasion," Ramsay once told the Observer Sport Monthly. "And I was fast, I was a great 100m sprinter. If you were to compare me to anyone, I guess it could be Stuart Pearce," he said. Despite him giving up on his pursuit to play professional football, Ramsay still plays the beautiful game now and then, such as becoming a regular participant in Soccer Aid and other charity events. His cooking career has gone on to achieve tremendous success, earning him US$62mil in 2018 according to Forbes. That's behind only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Not bad for a second-choice career! The 58-year-old Scot owns more than 50 restaurants around the globe, including his three-Michelin-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London. He said he also insists that his staff have good personal hygiene because he doesn't want them to put customers off their food. He said: "There is nothing worse than a sweaty fat f**k that comes out of the kitchen and goes to the table and he's got dehydrated skin, a beard that isn't trimmed, he's sweating from the armpits and his fingernails are black. Then he asks you 'How's your lunch?'. "I mean that's the worst question. First of all you should never have sent that food if it wasn't good anyway so don't ask that question and secondly it's a bad advert for the restaurant. "It's just common sense. I hate laziness, I hate slobs, I'm not good at that. "Laziness is the worst thing anyone can bring into any workplace. "When chefs start cutting corners in our business you're screwed, it's the beginning of the end." Speaking on the Smartless podcast, Ramsay also told how he likes to change the staff at his restaurants every three or four years. He said: "It's important to change the staff so they don't get complacent and lazy. Gordon Ramsay reveals customers are using BATHROOMS in new skyscraper restaurant for X-rated acts "I've been a great motivator of planning succession as well. This industry is an absolute bitch and it's notorious for the burnout so when I start to spot that in the team it's important to take a bit of a sabbatical and move them on." We told previously how Scotland best food spot has been crowned at a prestigious industry bash. Lyla in Edinburgh - helmed by a Gordon Ramsay-trained chef - was handed the plaudit from the National Restaurant Awards.

Gordon Ramsay's restaurant set up shop at the shopping centre in 2021 to replace Giraffe, which originally stood by the riverside alongside many other popular businesses. The Sun has contacted Gordon Ramsay Restaurants for comment. Last year was a bad 12 months for celebrity chefs after swathes of their restaurants failed. Even BBC MasterChef judges haven't been saved amid a spate of shocking closures as the hospitality industry feels extra pressure this year. Marco Pierre White, Simon Rimmer and Tony Rodd, to name a few, won over viewers' hearts on screen - but when it comes to running their own restaurant chains, things haven't always been as smooth. One of those closures is Gordon's protege and TV star Mark Sargeant, 51, has been forced to close down his restaurant in Kent. The chef announced the news in an email sent to loyal customers. As seen by Kent Online, the message read: "It is with deep regret that we announce the closure of The Restaurant MS. 'This decision, made after careful consideration, has not been easy. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our valued customers, dedicated employees, and supportive suppliers for their unwavering support since our inception, as we could not have achieved this journey without each of you." Another email from bosses read: "All voucher holders will be contacted shortly. 'Please be advised that we can only communicate with the individual who purchased the voucher. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.' It comes amid a challenging time for independent businesses, where restaurants, pubs, and cafes have been forced to shut down. This has often been associated with the rising cost of living and subsequent decline in dining out. Even well-known pizza chains have been faced with closures, like Papa Johns which confirmed that 43 of its restaurants would shut down in the coming months. More closures could be on the horizon due to upcoming hikes in employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and the national minimum wage.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Beverly Hills cops came to his mansion after being told there was an "armed robbery in progress." No sign of trouble was found when police arrived.
