Bengaluru electricity board makes smart meters mandatory for new rural connections from July 1

Starting July 1, the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) will enforce a new rule mandating smart meter installations for all new and temporary electricity connections in rural areas under its jurisdiction. The move follows directives from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), aimed at modernising the power distribution system across the state. More details According to a statement released by BESCOM, the initiative to roll out smart meters began in Bengaluru and other urban areas under its control on February 15, 2025. With this latest announcement, the utility is now expanding the programme to cover its rural regions as well. Consumers applying for new or short-term electricity connections in rural areas will be required to purchase smart meters from BESCOM-authorised outlets before completing the connection process. The company clarified that this shift aligns with KERC's official guidelines issued on March 6, 2024, and that smart meter implementation has been proceeding in a phased manner since then. Unlike conventional meters, smart meters come equipped with GPRS or RF-based communication systems, enabling them to transmit real-time usage data through cloud and server connections. Powered by Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), the devices allow seamless two-way communication between BESCOM and consumers. Smart meters also offer significant advantages for end users. Through a dedicated mobile application, consumers can track their electricity usage, voltage levels, and power factor in real time. Prepaid functionalities allow users to recharge for a specific duration, providing greater control over consumption. In case of disconnection due to non-payment, power can be instantly restored upon bill settlement. Additionally, BESCOM is gearing up to introduce a new digital platform to improve transparency and responsiveness in handling consumer complaints. This portal, aimed at strengthening the grievance redressal system, was first announced in May by BESCOM Managing Director N Sivashankar during a workshop held in collaboration with KERC and members of the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum (CGRF) at the KEB Engineers Association Hall.

Residents object to work on water supply line on Jeevan Nagar main road

Ludhiana: Civic authorities, who have stepped up efforts to provide canal-based water supply to city residents, are facing multiple challenges, one of which is public objection to laying of the water supply line on Jeevan Nagar main road. Area councillor Gaurav Bhatti attributed the resistance to what he claimed was an improper method of laying the water supply line under the World Bank's canal water supply project. He said that instead of digging the vacant space on the left side of the road to lay the line, the road was being dug up along with the divider. The road, which was built around one year ago after a decade long wait, receives heavy traffic in the morning and evening. However, officials of the water supply and sewerage board claimed that work of laying the water supply line had been planned in detail. They said that a GPRS survey was done before starting the work and the other side of the road was not dug up because of the presence of sewer lines or underground cables of telecom companies. Saying that they chose to dig at the vacant spot to ensure uninterrupted water supply to city residents, they added that the company laying the water supply line would get the road repaired. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alger: AI guru Andrew Ng recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Aroun... Iraq Develops Remote Air Pollution Monitoring System

By John Lee. The General Company for Communication and Power Equipment, under Iraq's Ministry of Industry and Minerals, has successfully designed and implemented a remote air pollution monitoring system, according to its Director General, Eng. Fawaz Muflih Dark. The system uses precision sensors to detect and measure concentrations of environmental pollutants, including carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Real-time readings are displayed on a built-in digital screen and transmitted automatically via SMS using the GSM network. Data is also sent to a dedicated website using GPRS, enabling remote and continuous monitoring. Dark explained that the system can be expanded to monitor up to 100 types of gases by integrating additional sensors as needed. Powered by solar energy, the unit can be deployed in remote locations, providing sustainable environmental monitoring and early warning alerts to protect both the environment and on-site personnel.
