The Next Supra Will Actually Be A Toyota Rather Than A Reskinned BMW

The fifth-generation A90 Toyota Supra has been a pretty curious vehicle since it went on sale for the 2020 model year. At first, folks were excited to be getting a new Supra at all, considering the fact that Toyota discontinued the U.S. model back in 1998. Pretty quickly, though, folks realized it was pretty much just a G29 BMW Z4 with a different body on top. Its engine options, transmissions and running gear were pretty much identical to the Z4. Now, Toyota is said to be rectifying this slight oversight with its next-generation GR Supra. The sixth-generation model is expected to come around sometime in 2027, and it's going to be powered by a Toyota-built turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four hybrid that is said to put out around 400 horsepower, according to a Best Car report reviewed by Forbes. Right now, the GR Supra uses a BMW B48 inline-four and a B58 inline-six. Granted, these are both very good motors, but they're sort of inauthentic when it comes to a Toyota sports car. Best Car says it will sit on a rear-wheel-drive platform. There's no word on whether this will be an all-new platform for the automaker or if it'll take an existing one from Lexus. One thing is for sure: it won't be shared with the Z4. That being said, there still might be some sharing among automakers. While it's likely the next Supra will get that aforementioned inline-four, Forbes says it's possible Toyota is testing a Supra prototype fitted with Mazda's turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six mild-hybrid powertrain found in the CX-70 and CX-90 crossover. In those applications, it makes 340 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. If I had to guess, it would be tuned to put out a bit more power than that in a possible next-gen Supra. Since the Supra went on sale back in 2019, it has been a bit of a sales success compared to its more expensive, convertible brother — selling over 24,000 units compared to the Z4's 13,000. I know for the most part that people dig the Supra, but it always just felt inauthentic to me. Sure, on paper, the B48 and B58 are probably better than Toyota's equivalent engines, and it's probably the same story with the car's platform, but I don't know. As the current-generation GR Supra approaches the end of its seven-year production run, Toyota has confirmed that a next-gen model is already in development. But fresh reports from Japan suggest the story might come with a twist — in the form of a Lexus counterpart. According to Japanese publication BestCar, Lexus may be planning its own version of the new Supra, potentially serving as a replacement for both the discontinued RC and the ageing LC models. While the upcoming GR Supra will stick to a traditional two-seat sports car layout, the Lexus variant is expected to adopt a 2+2 seating configuration, offering a more grand touring character. A convertible version is reportedly under consideration as well. To distinguish itself further, the Lexus model is likely to feature a more luxurious interior, in keeping with the brand's premium positioning. Both cars are expected to be powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a self-charging hybrid system. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via either an 8-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission, with a lightweight carbon fibre propeller shaft ensuring strength and efficiency. The next-generation Supra is anticipated to debut sometime in 2026 or 2027, with the Lexus version likely to follow shortly after.

Production of the current Toyota GR Supra is set to come to an end next year, but we already know Toyota is working on a successor to this brilliant sports car. Now, rumors have surfaced regarding a Lexus sports car twin for the next GR Supra. Up until this point, the two performance coupes from Lexus - the RC and LC - have not had anything in common with the Supra. But this next generation of Toyota/Lexus sports cars will be different, with the two sports cars expected to share a powertrain - and not one from BMW. According to Best Car Web from Japan, the Lexus version of the next Supra will be known as the LC+RC Integrated Sports, although this is obviously not expected to be the official name. What we can tell from this name is that the new Lexus sports car could replace both the RC and LC, which have been around for some time. The next Supra is expected to get a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain, with power still going to the rear wheels and either an eight- or 10-speed automatic. No mention was made of a manual gearbox option. The Japanese outlet also said that Toyota is investigating whether it can use Mazda's smooth inline-six engine for the Supra, which the Lexus version would logically use, too. In the Mazda CX-90, this engine makes up to 340 horsepower, but we'd expect a more powerful version in these sports cars. Mazda and Toyota already share powertrains, with the CX-50 Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid using the same four-cylinder hybrid. Even if their powertrains are the same, one key difference will be the seating layout. Whereas the next Supra is expected to remain a dedicated two-seater model, the Lexus version will be a 2+2. A convertible is also possible. As we saw with the BMW Z4 and Toyota GR Supra relationship, two cars with the same underpinnings can still look and feel completely unique, with their own driving characteristics. For this reason, we don't expect the new Supra to become an overly sanitized softie, simply because it will have a Lexus sibling. The Supra will likely be sharper and more engaging, whereas the Lexus version will probably be more of a classic grand tourer. The two cars will definitely be uniquely styled, and the Lexus should have better amenities and higher-quality finishes to justify a higher price tag. But, the automaker has not forgotten its roots as the ideal car for the everyday commuter who prioritizes good value above all else. For them, Toyota remains one of the go-to automakers in America, but what is the cheapest new Toyota car you can buy, and how does it compare to its chief rival from Honda? View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article For only $22,325, the base Toyota Corolla LE sedan is the most affordable model sold by the brand in the United States. That price excludes any optional extras and the destination charge. Not only is it the cheapest Toyota, but it's one of the most affordable new cars in America, too. The Corolla LE comfortably undercuts its main rival on price, that being the Honda Civic Sedan, which starts at $24,250. You'll also pay less for a Corolla sedan than a Corolla hatch, with the latter beginning at $23,780. Let's take a closer look at what the Corolla LE gets you for your money. The current Corolla sedan isn't as bland as previous iterations of the sedan. In particular, the front fascia is quite aggressive by Corolla standards, featuring wraparound headlight clusters and a substantial opening below the grille. All that being said, Toyota's cheapest car can't conceal its bargain price. It rides on exceedingly plain 16-inch steel wheels with covers, although alloys are available as part of a package. In standard white, it gives off an unavoidable rental car vibe, but at least you can upgrade to some more interesting colors for no charge, such as Blueprint. The only noteworthy standard exterior features are LED headlights and taillights. Then again, much the same is true of its Honda rival. Honda limits the base Civic to an all-black interior, so at least the Corolla has a bit more variety here. Traditional analog gauges are fitted, but at least there are no legibility concerns. In the LE, the infotainment setup includes an eight-inch touchscreen, six speakers, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so all the basics are covered. Toyota also includes four USB-C ports (two in front and two at the back), automatic single-zone climate control, and a 60/40 split-folding back seat. Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0 suite is smartly included as standard, and includes: Pre-collsion system with pedestrian detection Lane departure alert Automatic high beams Road sign assist Full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control Proactive driving assistance Blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert are optionally available. The base Corolla has more USB ports, a slightly larger touchscreen, and two extra speakers when compared to the pricier Civic. The Civic's main advantage is a more accommodating back seat. Overall, the Corolla LE's interior lacks some desirable items and nicer finishes, but there are no glaring omissions when one considers the car's low price. Besides, you can always upgrade to one of the Corolla's many better-equipped trims. All non-hybrid Corollas use a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. A CVT sends what limited power there is to the front wheels, and customers should be prepared to deal with some undesirable acoustics from the four-pot, together with languid acceleration. The Civic isn't any better in this regard (150 hp), so we suggest the base 191-hp Mazda 3 sedan for anyone in need of better performance; this also happens to be the cheapest Mazda on sale. On a more positive note, the cheapest new Toyota is highly efficient, returning 32/41/35 mpg city/highway/combined. It also rides comfortably and handles proficiently, but the Civic and Mazda 3 are both more involving to drive. It's hard to beat the base Corolla for sheer reliability and low running costs, but the underpowered engine and CVT transmission combination is perhaps the clearest sign that this is a budget car. For just a bit more than the Corolla LE sedan, here are two other cheap Toyota cars worth considering. Much of what we've covered about the base Corolla Sedan also applies to the cheapest Corolla Hatchback, which starts at $23,780. However, the hatchback gets a sportier base trim called the SE, which comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, a color-keyed rear spoiler, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. It sticks with the 169-hp engine, but has a much more youthful look and feel. Also Toyota's cheapest SUV, the base Corolla Cross L starts at just above $24k. It has the same 169-hp engine and a comparable specification to the Corolla LE. Being a crossover does mean a bigger back seat and a larger (24 cubic feet) trunk, though, which are the main reasons to choose this cheap Toyota instead.
