GSIS graduates excel in final exams

[The content of this article has been produced by our advertising partner.] Members of this year's graduating class at German Swiss International School (GSIS) achieved an impressive set of results in their final exams and are now preparing to take up hard-won places at some of the world's leading universities. With the school offering two distinct curriculums, 12 students in the German International Stream (GIS), who work towards the Deutsches Internationales Abitur (DIA), achieved an outstanding average score of 1.8. Most remarkably, one 16-year-old student, Samuel Cheung, was awarded a perfect Abitur score of 1.0, in the process becoming the youngest ever DIA graduate counterparts in the English International Stream (EIS), who follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), were similarly successful. Among a 68-strong cohort, all of whom passed the exams, seven students, Edith Chan, Emily Chen, Maxwell Leung, Michael Tay, Nadia Venetz, Rachael Ng and Tarama Loges, attained a maximum IB score of 45 points. In total, 51 students got 40 points or more, and six bilingual diplomas were awarded, two of them in English-German and the remaining four in English-Mandarin Chinese. 'We could not be any prouder of our students, whose outstanding results are testament to their ongoing commitment, incredibly hard work, and striving for excellence,' says GSIS principal Alexandra Freigang-Krause. 'Excellence comes in many forms and as a school we take pride in the achievements of all our students and celebrate their unique strengths and talents.' Much of the success, of course, is down to the school's commitment to academic excellence and engagement. This is supported by a well-coordinated programme which guides students on key approaches to learning, helping to maintain motivation, understand essential concepts, and undertake independent study.

GSIS: Over P1.5B in emergency loans released to calamity-hit members, pensioners

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) said Thursday it has released over P1.5 billion in emergency loans, extended to members and pensioners affected by Tropical Storms Crising, Dante, Emong and other calamities in the country. In a statement, GSIS said the emergency loan was provided as an immediate financial relief to states workers and pensioners hit by the calamities. The over P1.5-billion in funds released have benefited more than 44,000 emergency loan applications from active members and pensioners, according to the pension fund. 'As soon as the loan window opened, thousands of our members and pensioners turned to GSIS for help. This reflects how deeply the recent calamities have affected their lives and how urgently they need support.' said GSIS officer-in-charge Juliet Bautista. GSIS' emergency loan program offers a one-time loan of up to P40,000 for active members and P20,000 for pensioners. It carries a 6% interest rate per annum, computed in advance, and is payable in 36 equal monthly installments. The loan is also covered by Loan Redemption Insurance, meaning that in the event of the borrower's untimely death, the loan will be considered fully paid provided repayments are up to date. "We want our members to know they are not alone in recovering from the impact of recent storms. GSIS is here to extend support where it matters most,' said Bautista. The emergency loan can tapped by GSIS members whose residence or place of work is in a declared calamity area. Pensioners who live in the said areas may also avail of the loan. Loan availment periods vary depending on the date of the declaration and the submission of documentary requirements by the concerned local government units, according to GSIS. The pension fund said the emergency loan is open until August 15 in the province of Siquijor; until August 23 in Calumpit, Bulacan and Umingan, Pangasinan; from July 24 to October 23 in Cavite, Manila, and Quezon City; from July 25 to October 24 in Malabon, Marikina, Las Piñas, Navotas, Valenzuela, Roxas in Palawan, Agoncillo in Batangas, Balagtas in Bulacan, Malasiqui in Pangasinan, Bataan, Pampanga, and Dagupan City; from July 26 to August 25 in Mangaldan and Mangatarem in Pangasinan; from July 26 to October 24 in the province of Rizal; from July 26 to October 25 in Caloocan; from July 27 to October 26 in Muntinlupa; from July 29 to August 28 in the municipalities of Moncada and Paniqui in Tarlac, Anda and Lingayen in Pangasinan, Provinces of La Union and Laguna, and City of San Carlos, Pangasinan. The list of covered areas is continuously updated as more localities are declared calamity areas, GSIS said. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

GSIS to gov't agencies: Report assets damaged by storms

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) on Monday asked all government agencies with insured assets and properties to immediately report any damage caused by tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong. In a statement, the pension fund and state assets urged agencies to prepare their policy details and reach out to the nearest GSIS branch or extension office with the full list of contact details found on its website. GSIS said it provides coverage for all government-owned assets, including buildings, vehicles, equipment, and other properties. The pension fund said it offers a range of non-life insurance products for institutions, such as fire, motor vehicle, engineering, and accident insurance, as well as optional protection plans for individual members, pensioners, and their families. GSIS added it also issues compulsory third-party liability (CTPL) insurance and covers government-linked projects or ventures where public funds or interests are involved. 'We are ready to help agencies recover and get back on track. Your safety and protection remain our priority,' said GSIS officer-in-charge Juliet Bautista. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

GSIS: Emergency loan now open calamity areas in Metro Manila, Luzon

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) announced Thursday that its emergency loan can now be tapped by members and pensioners in four calamity-declared areas in Metro Manila and Luzon, namely Cavite, Quezon City, Pangasinan (Umingan), and Calumpit, Bulacan. In a statement, GSIS said the emergency loan 'aims to provide immediate financial relief to members and pensioners affected by Severe Tropical Storm Crising and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).' 'Eligible members and pensioners in these areas may now apply for the emergency loan,' the pension fund said. The availment period runs until August 23, 2025 for Umingan, Pangasinan and Calumpit, Bulacan; and until October 23, 2025 for Cavite and Quezon City. GSIS said it expects the list of covered areas to increase in the coming days as more local government units (LGUs) submit their official declarations. Qualified members with existing emergency loans may borrow up to P40,000, while first-time borrowers may avail up to P20,000. The loan is payable in three years, with a low 6% annual interest and no processing fee. GSIS said to qualify, active members must be working or residing in the declared calamity area, be in active service and not on unpaid leave, have no pending administrative or legal case, and have paid at least six monthly premiums. They must also have a net take-home pay of at least P5,000. Old-age and disability pensioners may also apply, provided their net monthly pension after loan amortization is at least 25% of their gross pension. Members and pensioners are encouraged to apply through the GSIS Touch mobile app for faster and more convenient processing. 'For those not yet registered in the app, they may apply through any GWAPS kiosk located in GSIS branches, select government offices, or over the counter,' it said. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

GSIS chief Veloso placed under preventive suspension by Ombudsman

The Office of the Ombudsman has placed Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) President Jose Arnulfo 'Wick' Veloso and six other officials under preventive suspension without pay for six months amid its probe on the P1.4 billion deal with Alternergy. In an Order dated July 11, the Ombudsman said it 'found sufficient grounds' to place Veloso and six other GSIS officials under a six-month preventive suspension 'considering that there is strong evidence showing their guilt' of possible grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, and violation of reasonable office rules and regulations over the P1.4 billion stock purchase from AlterEnergy Holdings Corporation. 'The [Ombudsman's Results of Investigation] expounded that the provisions [of the GSIS Investment Policy Guidelines] were contravened by the respondents because: the Perpetual Preferred Shares were not listed with the PSE (Philippine Stock Exchange) on the dates of the execution of the agreement and the payment of the subscription, the investment was non-compliant with the Minimum Market Capitalization and exceeded the Free Float Market Capitalization Cap,' the Ombudsman said. Likewise, the Ombudsman said that the P1.4 billion worth of preferred shares were purchased by GSIS without the necessary endorsement from the Assets and Liabilities Committee (ALCO) and the Risk Oversight Committee (ROC) for the approval of the Board of Trustees (BOT). 'Their continued stay in office may prejudice the investigation of the case filed against them. [The suspension order is being issued] in order to preserve documents and evidence pertaining to this case which they have control and custody; and in order to avoid respondents' commission of further malfeasance and/or misfeasance in office,' the Ombudsman said. GMA News Online has reached out to Veloso for comment but he has yet to reply as of posting time. Meanwhile, the Ombudsman said the GSIS officials can appeal the suspension, although its immediate implementation cannot be interrupted. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
