‘108% rise in taxpayers in the Salem GST Commissionerate'

The Commissioner of Central GST and Central Excise, Salem, Sidlingappa Teli, has said that the number of taxpayers in the Salem Commissionerate has increased significantly from around 36,000 in July 2017 to around 75,000 in June 2025, showing a 108% rise. The GST Day was celebrated at the Salem GST office at Manalmedu on Tuesday evening in which Salem Railway Division Divisional Manager Panna Lal was the chief guest. Jaison Praveen Kumar, Joint Commissioner of CGST, welcomed the participants and delivered the welcome address. Speaking at the function, Mr. Sidlingappa said that GST has undergone several reforms during these eight years, adapting to business needs. So far, 55 GST cuncil meetings have been held and the GST law has been simplified significantly. Due to these reforms, the GST revenue of ₹22.08 lakh crore was achieved in the country during the last financial year. The Salem GST revenue realisation for the year 2024-25 was ₹4,360 crore, and up to May 2025, the Commissionerate has already achieved ₹832 crore, which is ₹114 crores (16.1%) more than the revenue collected during the same period last year. The national percentage increase in GST revenue was 9.4%, while the Salem Commissionerate's growth stood at 10%, Mr. Sidlingappa added. Stating that the Central Excise revenue from the sole unit under the Commissionerate's jurisdiction stood at ₹461 crore during 2024-25, Mr. Sidlingappa added that digital initiatives such as e-office, DIN-based communication, and e-invoicing have been effectively implemented, significantly enhancing transparency and taxpayer facilitation. The introduction of automatic return scrutiny and the phased implementation of e-invoicing for businesses exceeding specified turnover thresholds have notably improved compliance levels. A dedicated Suvidha Kendra has been established at the headquarters in Salem to facilitate GSTIN registrations through biometric authentication, ensuring faster and more secure issuance of GST registrations, the Commissioner added. Commendation certificates were awarded to meritorious officers and those who contributed to blood donation. Top taxpayers and high revenue-contributing entrepreneurs from various categories, including MSMEs, were felicitated.

Practical problems of GST yet to be resolved, says Finance Minister Balagopal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister K N Balagopal, on Tuesday, said that some practical problems of Goods and Service Tax (GST), which were evident from the beginning, are yet to be resolved. 'I was one of the few people who expressed dissent over GST in the joint select committee due to these problems,' the minister said, after inaugurating the GST Day celebrations of CGST Thiruvananthapuram zone at the Tagore Theatre. 'Though said to be barrier-free, certain issues are persistent in the GST domain,' said the minister, highlighting the need to increase the state's IGST share. 'Even though the state's GST collection growth is 24% between May 2024 and May 2025, the revenue growth in the same time frame is only 9%,' said Balagopal. Clarifying that this doesn't imply a complete rejection of the GST system, the finance minister also appreciated the collaborative efforts of central GST and state GST, adding that measures are being taken to bring in a uniform pattern of taxation among various products under the same domain. Actor Mohanlal was awarded the top taxpayer in the performing arts category of the Thiruvananthapuram zone at the ceremony. 'Paying taxes properly and guarding the country as a soldier, both are part of serving the nation,' said Mohanlal. The function was also attended by chief commissioner (CGST & Customs) Shaik Khader Rahman and commissioner (GST & Central Excise) K Kalimuthu. Commendation certificates for CGST officers and tax compliance excellence recognition awards for institutions were distributed at the ceremony.

Robust reforms must be brought in to build a corruption-free system, says Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishnan

C.P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Maharashtra, said that robust reforms in taxation, the judiciary, and the electoral process must be brought in to build a system that prevents corruption and supports law-abiding citizens. He was speaking at the GST Day programme organised by the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Commissionerate in the city on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Mr. Radhakrishnan said that all reforms should be designed in a way that leaves no gaps for corruption. 'The system should be strong enough to take care of the good people and correct itself when needed,' he said. On judicial reforms, he noted that wrongdoers exploit loopholes in the system and said judgments should be stricter and more effective. He also stressed the need for reform in the income tax system, stating that the tax administration should be able to distinguish between hard-earned income and illicit gains. 'There are people who have not yet come under the tax net, but their income is genuinely earned. On the other hand, black money, which is not backed by any work or effort, should be clearly identified and acted upon,' he said. Describing GST as a scientific tax system, Mr. Radhakrishnan said it has contributed to transparency, reduced corruption, and ensured a level playing field for businesses. He added that the system, now adopted by over 160 countries, has encouraged tax compliance and led to increased national revenue. This, he said, is reflected in infrastructure development projects across the country. 'Without revenue, none of these projects would be possible. GST has also been one of the key reasons India has become the world's fourth largest economy,' he said. On electoral reforms, he supported the idea of 'One Nation, One Election', stating that it would reduce the time and cost involved in conducting frequent elections and allow for more efficient governance. Dinesh P. Pangarkar, Principal Commissioner of GST and Central Excise, said the Coimbatore Central GST Commissionerate had recorded significant growth since GST implementation. Revenue increased from ₹1,105 crore in 2017–18 to ₹3,906 crore in 2024–25. The taxpayer base doubled in eight years, he said, reflecting wider acceptance among trade and industry. In 2024–25 alone, GST refunds worth ₹746 crore were disbursed. Top tax payers were felicitated at the event.
