Could Bills' 'Underrated' Receiver Become Josh Allen's No. 1?

Could Bills' 'Underrated' Receiver Become Josh Allen's No. 1? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, without a genuine No. 1 weapon, the Buffalo Bills' receiver room was questioned, as Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis were asked to move on. Advertisement With a receiver-by-committee approach, the Bills averaged a crisp 30.9 points per game and became one of the best offenses in football. Slot merchant Khalil Shakir took it upon himself to be the default No. 1 and posted 821 yards and four touchdowns from 76 receptions (all career highs) as he led Buffalo in every key category except touchdowns. But despite Shakir's continual improvement, Bleacher Report has named him as one of the most underrated receivers in football. "Khalil Shakir was touted as one of the major steals of the 2022 draft after the Buffalo Bills snagged him on Day 3 that year, but it took some time for the receiver to start realizing his immense potential," Bleacher Report writes. Advertisement "Shakir should only get better with another offseason to prepare as the reigning MVP's favorite weapon. Expect Shakir to finally slip the underrated label and break out as one of the NFL's stars with his best effort yet in 2025." Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allencelebrates with WR Khalil Shakir (10) after scoring a touchdown in a 2025 AFC divisional-round Fisher-Imagn Images In Khalil's three seasons, each year, he has improved, so perhaps 2025 is the year he will crack the famous 1,000-yard mark as a member of Joe Brady's offense. Granted, as part of an offense that has a handful of quality receivers, that might be tough, but Shakir did it last season; there's nothing to suggest he can't do it again and better. We think he is sneaking under the radar of defenses, but the more he continues to develop that connection with Josh Allen, the more attention he will receive. Advertisement And who knows, maybe the 2025 season is where Shakir takes that No. 1 receiver role, and finally ditches the "underrated" tag. Report: Steelers not expected to trade for Dolphins Pro Bowler

Oh, what a difference a few days make for the Pittsburgh Steelers trade buzz. Previously, insider Adam Schefter set off a trade speculation frenzy in the Steel City — reporting that the Steelers and Dolphins had engaged in trade talks regarding Miami's Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith. Five days later, however, Schefter has taken a different tone on the matter. Advertisement Packaged with Schefter's report on veteran WR Gabriel Davis visiting Pittsburgh, the long-time insider revealed that the Steelers were not expected to trade for Smith. Here's what he had to say on the situation: "Pittsburgh has been seeking additional receiving help and has inquired about, but is not expected to trade for, Miami TE Jonnu Smith." Insider Ian Rapoport had previously believed little would come of these trade talks — and one can't help but wonder if acquiring Smith would have made any difference for the already TE-sound Steelers offense. Report: Steelers unlikely to trade for TE Jonnu Smith

June 3 - The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to acquire tight end Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins, ESPN reported on Tuesday. ESPN also reported that the Steelers will host free agent wide receiver Gabriel Davis on Thursday. As for Smith, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel voiced his support of the tight end on Tuesday and said trading him is not the focus of the team. Smith, 29, set a franchise record for receptions (88) and receiving yards (884) by a tight end last season. He also had eight touchdowns in 17 games (six starts) en route to being selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. Smith has totaled 307 catches for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns in 124 career games (84 starts) with the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Dolphins. He was selected by the Titans in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Davis was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars after one season on May 7 in a move that saw the team absorb a $20.3 million dead cap hit. Davis, 26, caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games (nine starts) last season before sustaining a torn meniscus in his left knee on Nov. 17 in a 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions. Davis had 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in 64 games (47 starts) with the Buffalo Bills. He was selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of UCF. The Steelers acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks on March 9. The two-time Pro Bowl selection then signed a four-year, $132 million deal with Pittsburgh. The Steelers also shipped wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys on May 7 in exchange for draft-pick compensation. Going to Dallas along with Pickens is a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, while the Steelers received a third-round selection in 2026 and a fifth-round pick in 2027. The Steelers still are awaiting an answer from free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers as to whether he will sign with Pittsburgh. --Field Level Media
