Creating the Gaddar Award demanded cultural sensitivity and historical insight, says the artist
Mahi Sharma The Telangana Gaddar Film Awards memento featuring a golden hand clutching a traditional dappu, wrapped with a film reel, is a bold and evocative symbol of the spirit of resistance and culture in Telangana. It is the creation of Ramavath Nayak, an artist whose journey began in the bylanes of a small village near Guntur. Born in the early 1980s, Nayak discovered his love for art while still in school. His first earnings of ₹200 was by painting maps and portraits on school walls. Talking about his design, Mr. Nayak explained, 'The hand signifies the people's power to shape their lives and the dappu represents the beat of revolution, of collective justice. And the film reel ties it all to the power of storytelling through cinema.' For Mr. Nayak, designing the Gaddar Award was personal. 'I come from a village where there wasn't even an art teacher and to be chosen for something like this is a reminder that passion not privilege, defines your path,' he says. He added that creating the memento involved more than artistic skill; it demanded cultural sensitivity and historical insight. For this, he immersed himself in Gaddar's writings, speeches, and performances to understand the spirit of the man and the movement. He studied Telangana's folklore, protest art, and the region's history of resistance to arrive at the iconic design we now see. To hone his talent, he joined the Venkateshwara College of Fine Arts in Hyderabad. His decision to enroll was shaped by a fortuitous moment, a state-level art competition where his concept painting, themed around environmental awareness, caught the attention of prominent guests. One of whom encouraged him to pursue formal training in art. Despite financial constraints, he managed to complete his education, supporting himself with prize money and freelance work. Nayak was suggested as a candidate to design the Gaddar Award by his well-wisher Satya Kishor. As the Gaddar Award finds its place in the hands of Telugu cinema's finest, it carries with it not only recognition but also resistance, pride and an enduring beat of revolution just as Gaddar would have wanted. SIO condemns Gaddar Film Award for ‘propaganda' movie
StudentsIslamic Organisation (SIO) Telangana strongly condemned the decision of the Telangana Government to award 'Razakar' a 'propaganda' film – presented as 'true historical events' – with the Gaddar Award for Best Historical Film. According to SIO, under the guise of cinema, this project, produced and promoted by BJP leaders, not merely distorts but creates ahistorical 'facts' to vilify the Muslim community of Hyderabad. 'It is a direct attack on the - past and present - communal harmony and coexistence represented by Hyderabad. It presents an ahistorical and inflammatory portrayal, vilifying an entire community while overlooking historically documented large-scale episodes of violence,' said Mohammed Faraz Ahmed, State President SIO Telangana. He further said, 'This decision by the Congress-led government under the CM not only endorses but legitimises these dangerous propaganda narratives of fascist forces, thereby showcasing an open betrayal to the existence of heterogeneity in the state. Moreover, the use of 'Gaddar' in favour of a movie crafted to inflame communal sentiments with deeply anti-Muslim narrative is an insult to the memory of the revolutionary Gaddar, who stood for justice, equality and resistance to oppression.' SIO Telangana urges the state government and key stakeholders to immediately revoke this recognition and disassociate from such divisive narratives. We call upon all justice-driven organisations and individuals to act against this growing normalisation of hate. 'We also appeal to the citizens, especially the youth, to turn to verified, scholarly established historical narratives rather than accepting fabrications shaped through propaganda peddled by the Sangh,' he added.

Atlee addresses criticism that his films are 'copied'; says this about his next with Allu Arjun, Deepika Padukone
Director Atlee received an honorary doctorate from Sathyabama University in Chennai on Saturday evening. The filmmaker gave a speech on stage to mark the occasion and spoke about his upcoming film with Allu Arjun, Deepika Padukone, and more. He also addressed criticism of his films all being copied. (Also Read: Allu Arjun receives Gaddar Award for Pushpa 2 from CM Revanth after run-in over stampede case, fans love the 'comeback') Atlee discussed naysayers' perceptions of how scenes and characters in his films are copied. He said, 'Generally, there's a perception that the films I make are taken from here or there. But let me tell you about my life today and give an example you can connect with.' This comes after the internet pointed out similarities between the poster of his next film and Dune. The filmmaker mentioned Vijay's character, a gangster-turned-football coach named Michael Rayappan, from his 2019 film Bigil and said, 'Raayappan in Bigil was inspired by Jeppiaar sir, the founder and chancellor of this university. Today, when I got the doctorate and they played music from Mersal (2017), I believe I earned this only through honesty, only through love. I promise today that I will make this country proud.' Atlee also spoke about his yet-to-be-titled film with Arjun and Deepika, saying, 'Kalanidhi Maran sir (of Sun Pictures) is producing this film. It's one of the most expensive films to be made in our country. We will be using a lot of new technology to make it. I'm dreaming big, and the budget has yet to be locked. The producer will decide the release date.' After it was announced in April that Arjun's next film after Pushpa will be with Atlee, the film's team announced in June that Deepika has also been roped in for the project. Arjun congratulated Atlee for his doctorate and wrote on social media, 'Big congratulations to @Atlee_dir garu on receiving the honorary doctorate. Really happy to see your passion and craft being celebrated at this level. Wishing you many more heights ahead.' Atlee debuted as a director with the 2013 film Raja Rani and has since delivered only hits. His last film was the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika-starrer Jawan, his Bollywood debut. It grossed over ₹1100 crore worldwide, becoming Shah Rukh's highest-grossing film.
