Hyderabad's Green Leap: Mayor calls for city-wide tree plantation drive
Hyderabad: In a significant push for a healthier and greener urban environment, GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, along with GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, officially launched a massive tree plantation drive as part of the VanaMahotsavam initiative. The drive commenced with the planting of saplings at Shirdi Hills Colony in the Kukatpally Zone, marking the start of an ambitious project to plant 25 lakh (2.5 million) saplings across Greater Hyderabad. Inspired by the 'Green Legacy' concept, the Mayor has urged all citizens to actively participate in transforming the city. 'We have set a target of planting 25 lakh saplings this year with public participation, as per government directives,' stated Mayor Vijayalakshmi. She further emphasised that saplings would be distributed to every household in the city, encouraging residents to take an active role in the initiative throughout the planting season. A heartwarming aspect of the campaign is the slogan 'Ek ped, Maa ke naam' (One tree in the name of mother), encouraging individuals to plant a tree in honour of their mothers. The Mayor underscored the crucial importance of not just planting trees but also ensuring their proper care, highlighting that these efforts would cultivate a healthier environment for future generations. Commissioner Karnan reiterated the programme's objective to make Hyderabad green, stressing that the government's goals would be achieved by setting specific VanaMahotsavam targets within each ward. He also laid emphasis on nurturing the planted saplings, stating that 'greater emphasis will be placed on nurturing the plants rather than merely planting them.' The launch event saw enthusiastic participation from students, who chanted 'Go Green' slogans alongside the Mayor and Commissioner, underscoring community involvement in this vital environmental endeavour. Also present were Kukatpally Zonal Commissioner Apurva Chauhan, UBD Additional Commissioner Subhadra Devi, and Corporator RavulaSeshagiri Rao.

FLO hyderabad announces 5th edition of StyleTatva – now powered by MSME
FLO Hyderabad, the women's wing of FICCI, proudly announced the 5th edition of its flagship fashion and lifestyle exhibition, 'StyleTatva', to be held on June 13–14, 2025, at HITEX Hall 2 from 10 am to 8 pm. This year marks a milestone as the event is officially powered by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India—demonstrating FLO's deep commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs and artisans. Featuring 205 curated exhibitors from across the country, 'StyleTatva' 2025 will showcase a vibrant mix of fashion, lifestyle, décor, and artisanal products. Over 10,000 visitors are expected to attend. Entry is free via WhatsApp invite, or ₹100 at the gate. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, with Poonam Sharma, FLO National President, and celebrity fashion draper Dolly Jain as guests of honour. Femina Miss India 2023 and Miss World Top 20 finalist Nandini Gupta graced the pre-event press conference, expressing admiration for FLO's initiative: 'When women come together passionately, incredible things happen. 'StyleTatva' is a wonderful event with a great purpose.' A key highlight is the 'Initiative Pavilion' showcasing the revival of the ancient 'Dokra' craft from Adilabad. Known for its unique lost-wax metal casting, 'Dokra' art is being revived through design innovation and market linkages. FLO will premiere a documentary on the artisans and their stories during the event. In alignment with social impact, FLO is offering free stalls to Telangana weavers, prison-based livelihood programs, and social sector artisans. An MSME desk at the venue will also help entrepreneurs register for Udyam and access benefits, including Rs 54,000 stall reimbursement and Rs 25,000 for incidentals under the government scheme. 'StyleTatva is where purpose meets profit,' said FLO Chairperson Prathibha Kunda. 'With support from MSME, we're fuelling women-led growth and preserving our heritage.' Proceeds from the exhibition will fund FLO Hyderabad's social impact projects like the 'Bhongir Skill Centre', digital skilling, and vocational training for women—creating sustainable livelihoods and supporting craft heritage revival across Telangana.

GHMC General Council holds discussions on monsoon prep
Hyderabad: The GHMC General Council meeting on Wednesday held detailed discussions on monsoon preparedness and other basic amenities. The 11th meeting was chaired by GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijaylakshmi. During this meeting, the members voiced their outrage at the horrific attack on innocent individuals by terrorists in Pahalgam. The council members extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this attack and held a two-minute moment of silence to pray for the peace of the souls who have departed. GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi has called on both authorities and public representatives to collaborate effectively for the city's progress. Prior to the start of the meeting, the Mayor spoke at the council gathering and stated the Chief Minister has guaranteed that there will be ample funding available for infrastructure and welfare development within GHMC, and she expressed his appreciation for the support given to the development of Baldia through the allocation of funds. The pre-monsoon sanitation initiative aims to clean all streets to prevent seasonal diseases. She stressed the program's large-scale implementation for city cleanliness and urged officials to work with local representatives, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs for its success. Zonal review meetings are addressing public concerns, and decisions have been made to resolve issues raised by corporators. The mayor confirmed that corporators will collaborate with officials on sanitation, de-silting, Nala development, and infrastructure improvements in various zones. The aim is to identify new routes for the approximately 744.22 km of roads designated in CRMP-1 and to transfer the management of a total of 1142.54 km of roads to private agencies for the next five years (2025-2030), while seeking approval for a budget of Rs 3825 crore for this initiative. Furthermore, the corporators from various parties claim that they made plans to remove the officials due to alleged irregularities in the tenders for vehicles intended for use in the monsoon relief efforts. In the meeting, BRS corporators raised concerns about the arrest of Baba Fasiuddin, a Congress member from Borabanda, alleging his involvement in a suicide. They raised slogans and held placards demanding Fasiuddin's arrest. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi intervened and successfully calmed the upset corporators. She mentioned that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged and that the case is currently being investigated. 'The law will take its course, and if the BRS corporators have any additional evidence related to this issue, they are urged to present it to the investigating authorities,' she stated. However, BJP corporators expressed their discontent with the council meeting. During the session, BJP corporators resolved to remove the Mayor over issues related to road maintenance, street lighting upkeep, sanitation, birth certificate processing, entomology, and the construction and upkeep of flood water canals. Other issues discussed were the operation of HYDRA, the status of street lighting, the process for issuing birth and death certificates, the rainwater harvesting pits built by GHMC, the restoration of RTC bus stops, the absence of essential infrastructure in cemeteries, and the painting and beautification projects carried out on flyovers throughout the city. The meeting was attended by MPs Eatala Rajender, Raghunandan Rao, MLCs Vijayashanti, Balmuri Venkat, Mirza Riaz ul Hassan Effendi, Mirza Rahmat Baig, Addanki Dayakar, MLAs Zulfiqar Ali, Majid Hussain, Kausar Moinuddin, Rajasekhar Reddy, Bandari Laxma Reddy, Commissioner R.V. Karnan, Additional Commissioners Sneha Shabarish, Venugopal, Venugopal Reddy, Pankaja, Subhadra,and others were present.

GHMC has no right to demolish if it does not give permission, say corporator and Mayor
The Wednesday's council meeting at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation witnessed some paradoxical moments, with corporators as well as Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi affirming that the corporation should not go ahead with demolition of unauthorised constructions. The debate was kicked off by BRS corporators who demanded action against absentee member Baba Fasiuddin reportedly for abetting suicide of a BRS leader in Borabanda. The deceased leader who fell to his death from his unauthorisedly constructed home in SRT Nagar area, was alleged to have been harassed by who strongly denied the charge. The GHMC had reportedly issued notices to the leader over unauthorised construction, which, the BRS leaders allege was done at the behest of Mr. Fasiuddin. In connection with this, corporator Dedeepya Rao questioned why notarised documents are not accepted for according building permissions. While there were over 200 houses built illegally with ground plus five floors, only the BRS leader was targeted with threats of demolition. Chief City Planner K. Srinivas tried to reason that as per the GHMC Act, 1955, sale deed is a mandatory requirement for issue of building permissions, and that notary documents are not accepted as proof of ownership. Bansilalpet corporator Hemalatha Laxmipathi, at this juncture, came up with the argument that if GHMC would not accord permission on the basis of notarised documents, it did not have the right to bring down the structure, which defied all the rationale of the Act. Mayor Ms. Vijayalakshmi, without much thought, endorsed the argument, and repeated the statement, much to the amusement of officials and other corporators. One more issue was raised during the meeting, about encroachment of seven acres of government land in Uppal, which is being constructed upon, based on the permission obtained on a different survey number. Commissioner R.V. Karnan said the permission was given based on a favourable report by the District Collector in 2021. Later, notices were issued, and the builder approached the court.

Mayor calls for united efforts towards state's progress
Hyderabad: Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), urged everyone to unite with commitment for the development of Telangana. The Mayor, along with Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shobhan Reddy, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, unfurled the National Flag at the GHMC headquarters,on State Formation Day on Monday. On this occasion, the Mayor conveyed her warm greetings to the citizens of Greater Hyderabad, Telangana activists, corporators, and other public representatives. 'Numerous individuals sacrificed their lives during the Telangana struggle, and on this occasion, we honour and remember them,' she said. Vijayalakshmi urged everyone to unite with commitment towards the progress of the state and GHMC, ensuring that Telangana continues its journey of development, and that each person plays a role in the city's advancement. On this occasion, Mayor Vijayalakshmi along with Shoban Reddy and Karnan distributed PPE kits to sanitation, veterinary, and entomology workers. Later, the Mayor briefly explained the initiatives that have been launched, and are currently in progress within GHMC, including H-Citi, SRDP, SNDP, desiltingefforts, beautification projects, water logging, community development, skill enhancement, PM Svanidhi, food safety measures, urban biodiversity initiatives, and various other programmes. Additional Commissioners, Sneha Shabarish, Raghu Prasad, Venugopal, Subhadra Devi, Nalini Padmavati, Geetha Radhika, Yadagiri Rao, Ashok Samrat, CCP Srinivas, CE Sahadev Ratnakar, Additional CCPs Venkanna, Pradeep, EVDM Additional SP Srinivas, Chief Medical Officer Dr Padmavati, and other officers were present. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA) Commissioner AV Ranganath unfurled the National flag at Buddha Bhavan on Monday. The Commissioner emphasised the importance of unity in achieving the aspirations and goals of the people of Telangana. After many dreams, we have finally attained a separate state, he said, and urged everyone to collaborate in turning those dreams into reality. CommissionerRanganath mentioned that the state government has established HYDRA and has committed to safeguard tanks, canals, and both government and public properties. Furthermore, it has mandated that efforts be made to prevent loss of life and property during natural disasters and to provide support to the community.
