Ireland striker Aaron Connolly ‘buzzing' as he seals move to League One side
Aaron Connolly says he is 'buzzing' to get started with Leyton Orient, after confirmation on Monday that the nine-time capped Ireland striker had signed a two-year contract with the League One side. Connolly was a free agent after coming to the end of a short-term deal at Millwall. A former Premier League striker with Brighton, the 25-year-old is looking to recapture the form that once marked him out as a top Irish prospect. Connolly said: 'I'm buzzing to be here. I met with the Gaffer last Monday, and straight away we both wanted to get it done. 'I'm delighted to be here, and the Gaffer was a main factor in me coming here. I know the club just missed out on promotion last year, but we're hoping to go one better this year. 'I had my first session today, and I'm delighted that the transfer is done now. It happened quite quickly, which is always good for a player.' Connolly burst onto the scene with Brighton, scoring twice against Tottenham in his first Premier League start. In total, he netted eight times in 52 appearances for the Seagulls, including five in the top-flight, but his struggles to nail down regular first-team football saw him loaned to Middlesbrough, Venezia and Hull City. A long-term move to Hull followed, but after he scored eight goals in 30 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign he left the club and spent last summer undergoing rehabilitation for alcohol addiction. He moved to Sunderland late last September and played 11 times, scoring once against Millwall, and last January he joined the Lions on a six-month contract. After scoring once in 14 appearances, he was released at the end of that deal. Connolly on Monday became Orient's fifth signing of the summer, joining another former Brighton player, and ex-Shamrock Rovers prospect Killian Cahill. The Leyton Orient squad also includes former Ireland Under-21 winger Ollie O'Neill. Head coach Richie Wellens said: 'I tried to sign Aaron when I was at Swindon a few years ago, but he then scored a hat-trick against MK Dons in the EFL Trophy. Everyone was in for him after that. 'He's talented, quick, good on the ball and skilful. He's got an eye for goal, and he scored twice on his Premier League debut for Brighton. 'The ability is all there, and when I met him recently I got a really good vibe off him. I sense that there is a burning desire for him to do well. 'If we can get Aaron firing, I have absolutely no doubt in his abilities.'

Plymouth Argyle target Christian Saydee signs for Ryan Lowe's Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic have beaten Plymouth Argyle to the signing of Portsmouth striker Christian Saydee, who has joined the Latics on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Plymouth Live understands there was interest in Saydee, 23, from Argyle but he has opted to make the move to Wigan, who are managed by former Pilgrims' boss Ryan Lowe. Saydee was quoted on Wigan's official club website: "I'm very happy to be here. I've thought about this move for a while, and it's a massive decision. Advertisement "I spoke to the Gaffer, and he emphasised how I could fit into the squad. With the Gaffer being who he is, it will be a massive help for me, as I will learn a lot from him. I'm very excited to meet everyone, and I just want to get started now." Lowe added: "It's brilliant that Christian has decided to join us and commit to the project here at Wigan Athletic, becoming one of the first forward players through the door. Advertisement "It is clear that we need more in the attacking area of the field. I've always said we need players who know how to score, and we will coach them to get into the right positions - and we will certainly do that with Christian because he wants to learn, and his character and profile are excellent. He will fit really well into what we're looking to build here." Argyle currently do not have a senior striker in their squad. Ryan Hardie, their 2024/25 top scorer and player-of-the-year, joined newly-promoted Championship club Wrexham earlier this week while Mustapha Bundu is moving on as a free agent with his contract set to officially end on June 30. On-loan Michael Obafemi returned to Burnley at the end of last season. So adding attacking players is clearly one of the main priorities for the Pilgrims, whose players will report for the start of pre-season training tomorrow. CCTV released after assault in Scots nightclub
Police are investigating an assault in a Scots nightclub and have released CCTV to assist with their investigation. CCTV images of a man have been released following an assault in a Scots nightclub. The incident took place last year on Saturday, July 27, 2024, between 1am and 3am at Life Nightclub in Dunfermline. Police Scotland have now released images of a man they believe may be able to assist officers with an ongoing investigation into an assault. The black male is described as speaking with an African/English accent and being between 30 and 40 years of age, around 5ft 8in tall and of slim build. At the time, he was wearing dark grey jeans, black Vans style shoes, a red t-shirt, black jacket and a black/grey cap. Those with information can contact Dunfermline CIU via 101 and quote incident number 4198 of July 30 2024. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Last week we reported, in a separate incident, that a savage carer who bit a lump out of a pal's face and spat on a police officer has been banned from the profession. Danielle Gaffar, from Dundee, tried to hide the fact she'd been jailed for a brutal nightclub attack when she applied to work in social care last year. The 24-year-old then went on to attack a police officer after a drunken house party, kicking them on the head and spitting on them. A social care watchdog struck the home carer off the register. A report from the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) told Gaffar: 'You have been convicted of two violent criminal offences in the space of five years. This demonstrates a disregard for the law, lack of self-control and propensity to violence. 'Your actions resulted in physical, and likely emotional, harm to the victims.' Kyra Strachan was going out with Gaffer's ex when she was assaulted to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement in February 2019 by her former friend. Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Gaffar and Miss Strachan, who were both 18 and at school at the time, were formerly close friends but there had been a 'disagreement' between them and there remained some animosity. Strachan had been on the dance floor of the Aura nightclub when she was attacked from behind, pulled to the ground, and her head was banged off the floor several times. Gaffar put her arm around her victim's throat until she struggled to breathe and bit her right cheek, leaving her needing eight stitches and permanently scarred. Gaffar was jailed for 16 months after a sheriff rejected defence pleas not to jail her, labelling her actions outrageous and 'reprehensible' and saying there had been 'absolute outrage in the community' as a result. In January last year, Gaffer failed to disclose the conviction when registering to be a support workers in home care. Just six months later she was convicted at Dundee Sheriff Court for a second time. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
