30 Most Important Eagles of 2025: No. 21 AJ Dillon

Every day from now until the start of training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles for the 2025 season. The Philadelphia Eagles are gearing up for Super Bowl defense, which features plenty of new and returning faces within the organization. Several players, coaches, and front-office members are crucial to the team's success this season. Every day from now until the start of training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025, and tackle the most significant question facing them this year. Next up is running back AJ Dillon, a physical and impactful veteran, looking to return to the field after missing the entire 2024 season. Background Position: RB Age: 27 Experience: 6th-year pro 2025 cap hit: $1,197,500 2024 recap Last summer, Dillon was set to enter a contract year in 2024, but he was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury and missed the entire season. 2025 outlook Kenneth Gainwell departed for Pittsburgh after spending his first four NFL seasons in Philadelphia as the backup running back for the Eagles. Gainwell appeared in 66 games, including four starts, and carried the ball 280 times for 1,185 yards, a 4.2-yard average, and 12 touchdowns. Gainwell also had 102 receptions for 721 yards, a 7.1-yard average, and one touchdown. He also has 27 kickoff returns for 612 yards, a 22.7-yard average. Dillon and Aaron Jones teamed up in Green Bay for a dynamic one-two punch, and that could happen in Philadelphia with the Eagles looking to take some of the load off of Saquon Barkley following a season in which he led the league with 2,0005 yards. Biggest question: Can Dillon take a load off Saquon Barkley? Dillon was selected 62nd overall (second round) in the 2020 NFL Draft. The six-foot, 247-pound back, known as "Quadzilla" by Packers fans, has been cleared for action. Dillon averaged 15 games played per campaign in his time in Green Bay -- excluding the missed 2024 season -- but only started 11. Dillon recorded 2,186 rushing yards between 2021 and 2023. The 6-foot, 247-pound back ranked second on the Packers with 2,928 yards from scrimmage from 2021-23, posting 50+ yards from scrimmage in 30 games. Two years ago, before the injury, Dillon appeared in 15 games with six starts during the 2023 season, posting 613 yards and two touchdowns on 178 carries while adding 22 receptions for 223 yards in the passing game. 30 Most Important Eagles of 2025 We're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles of 2025. Steelers add Super Bowl champion to offensive roster

Steelers add Super Bowl champion to offensive roster Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency. This left the Steelers with a significant void on the running back depth chart. But according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, Pittsburgh is adding a Super Bowl champion in Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell. Gainwell served as backup to Saquon Barkley last season, which seriously limited his opportunities. Gainwell finished with just 75 attempts and 290 rushing yards. Gainwell's best season was 2023 when he had 84 carries for 364 rushing yards. The addition of Gainwell does very little to change the Steelers need to replace Harris. Gainwell is a nice player and adds some value in the return game, which might make him a more likely replacement for Cordarrelle Patterson if he's released to save salary cap. Pittsburgh scouted many of the top running backs in the 2025 NFL draft at the NFL scouting combine and we expect the Steelers to add a playmaker via the draft.

Steelers reportedly signing former Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell

With Najee Harris off to Los Angeles, the Steelers have found some help for their running back room. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Steelers are finalizing a one-year deal with former Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell. The 25-year-old running back was selected 150th overall by the Eagles in 2021 and recorded 290 yards in 75 carries with one touchdown last season. In four seasons with Philadelphia, Gainwell had 280 carries for 1,185 yards, and 12 touchdowns. His best season was his rookie year when he rushed for five touchdowns in 16 games. Gainwell's best season for yardage came in 2023 when he had 364 yards in 84 carries. During the Eagles' Super Bowl run this past year, Gainwell appeared in all four games, had 13 carries for 42 yards, and three first downs. On Monday, it was reported that Najee Harris agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers for up to $9.25 million. The Steelers also acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seahawks over the weekend for a second-round pick and signed him to a four-year, $132 million extension, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. However, the Steelers are still searching for their quarterback for the upcoming season. Russell Wilson remains unsigned and Justin Fields agreed to a two-year deal with the New York Jets. Green Bay Packers and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Steelers to sign RB Kenneth Gainwell to one-year deal

The Steelers are finalizing a one-year deal with running back Kenneth Gainwell, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports. Pittsburgh lost running back Najee Harris to the Chargers in free agency, leaving Jaylen Warren, Cordarrelle Patterson and now Gainwell to take over the backfield duties. Gainwell, who turns 26 later this week, leaves the Eagles after four seasons and a Super Bowl victory. Philadelphia made him a fifth-round pick in 2021. He has appeared in 66 games with four starts, seeing action on 1,372 offensive snaps and 250 on special teams. He had 1,906 total yards and 13 touchdowns for the Eagles. In 2024, Gainwell played 301 offensive snaps and 114 on special teams in 17 games. He had 91 touches for 406 yards and a touchdown in the regular season and added 16 touches for 68 yards in the postseason. Gainwell is 103rd on PFT's top free agents list.

Eagles RB Kenneth Gainwell OVER 6.5 RUSHING YARDS (-115) Let's start small. Of course, star RB Saquon Barkley is going to gobble up a majority of the carries in his first Super Bowl. But, there is room for Gainwell to, uh, gain well. Let's look back at the postseason results. In the NFC wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers, Gainwell had 14 rushing yards on 3 attempts. In the Divisional Round against the Los Angeles Rams, Gainwell had a single 10-yard rushing attempt, while he had 3 carries for 8 yards against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game. If we take a broader look going back into the regular season, Gainwell has had at least 7 rushing yards in 7 of the past 8 games, and 14 of the past 17 outings. Gainwell isn't going to kill it, as long as Barkley remains healthy. But, he should get at least 7 yards or better. We saw a similar situation last season with the San Francisco 49ers with RB Christian McCaffrey and backup RB Elijah Mitchell. Taking the backups can be a low-risk, high-probability play. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts ANYTIME TD (-115) You know at some point that the Eagles quarterback is going to have the ball in his hands in the red zone, and he is as dangerous as anybody with his feet. The 'tush push' is likely to be the vehicle to get Hurts into the end zone. He had 3 rushing scores (along with Barkley) in the NFC Championship Game rout of the Commanders, and he added a rushing score against the Rams in the Divisional Round. Hurts has scored at least 1 rushing TD in 5 of the past 7 games, and 10 of the past 13 games. Eagles WR DeVonta Smith ANYTIME TD (+250) In addition to Hurts getting into the end zone, Smith is worth a roll of the dice. Don't get carried away, but don't forget about Smith, either, as he can help you multiply up by 2 1/2 times. He has exactly 4 receptions in each of the 3 postseason games, and he is averaging just 40.3 receiving yards per outing. The last time he scored was Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys, when he scored a pair of times. Here is a little nugget that might make you feel good. Smith faced AFC teams 4 times in the regular season. He had at least 3 grabs, at least 64 receiving yards, and he scored in every game against the AFC this season. First scoring play 3-way — including OT: Field Goal (+140) Playing the touchdown (-165) here isn't as much of a value. In the NFC Championship Game, the first score was a field goal, by the Commanders, as they actually had a brief lead before getting boat-raced. The Eagles did have a TD in the other 2 playoff games to start, however. For the Chiefs, a field goal opened the scoring in the Divisional Round against the Texans, while a TD was the first score in the AFC title game with the Buffalo Bills. It's a coin-flip, but the better value is on a field goal. FOOTBALL NEVER STOPS Live games, analysis and more 7 days a week: Get ESPN+ Super Bowl MVP – Chiefs QB PATRICK MAHOMES (+105) It's time, folks. We've never had an NFL team win the Super Bowl 3 times in a row. The dynasties of the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers or New England Patriots were unable to accomplish that feat. IF, and it's a big if, the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, Mahomes is a shoe-in for the MVP honors, whether he has an eye-popping stat game or not.
