The iPhone 17 Air can blow Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge out of the water — here's how
Samsung rightly made a splash with the Galaxy S25 Edge earlier this year, delivering a sleek device that doesn't skimp on the Galaxy AI features you'd expect from the phone maker's premium handsets. The Edge is super thin, ridiculously light and delivers impressive performance, particularly from its camera setup. And it also leaves a big opportunity for the iPhone 17 Air to come along and blow it out of the water when Apple's version of an ultra-thin phone shows up later this year. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be joining the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple's annual refresh of its smartphone offerings that will most likely show up in September. If Apple sticks to that expected iPhone 17 release date, it will mean that the Galaxy S25 Edge has had a four-month head start over its slender rival out of Cupertino. And that may not matter. After all, this wouldn't be the first time that Apple has let someone else come out with a product first to establish consumer interest, only to then follow up with its own offering that brushes aside the competition. That's the entire story of the iPhone, which was hardly the first smartphone but certainly the first one to enjoy widescale acceptance. Can history repeat itself with the iPhone 17 Air and the demand for impossibly thin smartphones? I think so, if Apple recognizes the areas where the Galaxy S25 Edge comes up short and delivers on this with its own handset. Samsung certainly got a lot right with the Galaxy S25 Edge, which turned out to be as thin as advertised without making too many sacrifices in the name of a more slender frame. (Well, there's one pretty big sacrifice, but we'll get to that in a moment.) At 5.8mm at its thinnest point, you can set down the Edge next to just about any phone and see how substantially thinner Samsung's phone is. It may be slender and light at 5.75 ounces, but the Edge doesn't feel insubstantial or like it's going to snap in two at the slightest bit of pressure. In his Galaxy S25 Edge review, my colleague John Velasco praised how solid and durable the phone feels when you're holding it. There are other strong points to consider as well. A Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset means the Galaxy S25 Edge can hold its own against any available phone. The Edge also benefits from the same Galaxy AI features available on other Samsung flagships. And though the S25 Edge may lack a dedicated telephoto lens, the 50MP main camera produces some excellent shots, particularly in low-light. Apple doesn't have to beat the Edge in all of these areas, but it will need to come pretty close. That could prove challenging given the iPhone 17 Air is likely to feature just one rear camera, and not the main lens/ultrawide camera setup featured on the Galaxy S25 Edge. But the A19 chipset likely to power the iPhone 17 Air should deliver formidable performance in its own right along with Apple Intelligence support. And the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be 5.65mm thin, which would push it past the Edge in terms of a slender design. While Apple can't take its eyes off those areas, there's at least one way for the iPhone 17 Air to establish its superiority over the Galaxy S25 Edge right out of the gate. And it all comes down to battery life. In the greater scheme of things, the Galaxy S25 does a decent job lasting a long time on a charge. In our test, where we have phones surf the web over cellular until they run out of battery, the Galaxy S25 Edge held out for 12 hours and 24 minutes — about 2 hours longer than the average phone. But the Galaxy S25 Edge does not aspire to be just an average phone. It's a premium device with a price tag to match. And compared to other premium phones, it doesn't have the best phone battery life — especially if you limit the comparison to Samsung flagships. Phone Battery size Batter life (Hrs:Mins) Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge 3,900 mAh 12:24 Samsung Galaxy S25 4,000 mAh 15:43 Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus 4,900 mAh 16:55 Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 5,000 mAh 17:14 iPhone 16 3,561 mAh 12:43 iPhone 16 Plus 4,674 mAh 16:29 iPhone 16 Pro 3,582 mAh 14:02 iPhone 16 Pro Max 4,685 mAh 17:17 The Galaxy S25, which costs $300 less than the Edge, lasts ore than 3 hours longer on our battery test. And that's on the lower end of battery life for the Galaxy S25 series — the Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra both hover around 17 hours. And that's the opportunity for Apple. If it can find a way for the iPhone 17 Air to not just last longer on a charge than the Galaxy S25 Edge but to handily outlast it, Apple can lay claim to offering the superior ultra-thin handset. The trouble is, the same space limitations that forced Samsung to use a 3,900 mAh battery for the S25 Edge will also apply to the iPhone 17 Air. According to rumors, Apple will turn to a 2,800 mAh battery for its upcoming phone. For context, the most compact current iPhone — the iPhone 16 — features a 3,561 mAh power pack. There are ways around that limited battery size. For starters, Apple's phones don't feature huge batteries compared to their Android counterparts, relying instead on the power management features of Apple's custom-designed silicon. As an example, the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 4,685 mAh battery, compared to a 5,000 mAh cell in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Yet, that iPhone edges ahead of the Ultra on our battery test by a few minutes. Apple also may have some tricks up its sleeve with the iPhone 17 Air. The iOS 26 update coming this fall introduces an adaptive power mode feature that taps into AI to extend a device's battery life. That should help out the iPhone 17 Air, as would a rumored switch to a denser silicon carbon battery. And the Apple-built C1 modem likely to wind up inside the iPhone 17 Air is said to be more power-efficient as well. Better battery life would certainly help the iPhone 17 Air outshine the Galaxy S25 Edge. A more affordable price than the $1,099 starting price for Samsung's phone would help, too, though the rumors don't give us much guidance on what Apple's planning there. I'd hope to see the iPhone 17 Air cost less than $1,000 with Apple's iPhone 17 Pro model commanding the higher price, but we're likely not going to hear more definitive rumors until we get closer to the fall launch date. Until that happens, I'm going to be keeping an eye out for additional iPhone 17 Air rumors to look for any clues as to how Apple can compete with Samsung on the ultra-thin phone front. But a big opportunity is already out there for all to see with those battery test numbers.

Apple Should Steal These Galaxy S25 Edge Features for a Thin iPhone
Tech companies are known for, shall we say, "borrowing" features from each other. Any time Apple or Samsung release a new phone or software update, you can be sure arguments over who did it first, or better, will ensue among hardcore fans. So, as Apple reportedly plans to debut a thinner version of the iPhone 17 this fall, it might look to competitors to see what resonates with consumers. And a few features on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge are on my wishlist for the rumored iPhone 17 Air. Reports suggest the skinnier iPhone could ultimately replace the iPhone Plus, and would have a similar $900 price tag. But whether or not tariffs will affect that price isn't clear. Samsung's super-thin S25 Edge clocks in at 5.8mm and 163 grams. It costs $1,100 and is available for purchase now. It's also one of my favorite phones I've ever used, thanks to the fresh form factor. In fact, despite my initial skepticism, I'm now convinced thin and light phones are the way to go. You can check out my review for a more in-depth breakdown of my experience using the phone. For now, though, I want to share five Galaxy S25 Edge features I'd love to see on the iPhone 17 Air. Apple may not have confirmed the existence of this slim device just yet, but that can't stop a girl from dreaming. A titanium frame Despite the Galaxy S25 Edge's spacious 6.7-inch display, it still feels impressively feather-light. In spite of its thinness, it's also surprisingly sturdy, it doesn't feel like it's going to snap in my hand or pocket. That lightweight durability is thanks to the phone's titanium frame, which is something I hope Apple adopts for its thin iPhone, too. Apple uses titanium frames in its Pro model phones, so it'd be great to see that same treatment applied to a thin iPhone. Since I'm sure it'll also have a premium price, it will definitely need extra reinforcement to keep it from bending. Rumors have gone back and forth on whether Apple's upcoming iPhones will have aluminum or titanium frames. However, analyst Jeff Pu said in February that the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will all have aluminum frames, and that the iPhone 17 Air could be the outlier with a titanium frame. I really hope that's true. A 120Hz refresh rate Samsung's S25 Edge has a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling. Honestly, with that $1,100 price, I'd be pretty annoyed if it didn't. If the iPhone Air is going to be marketed as a premium device, then it also needs to have a premium display. Simple as that. Asking for a 120Hz refresh rate in 2025 doesn't sound like an extravagant request -- until you remember that Apple's baseline 16 and 16 Plus iPhones only have a 60Hz refresh rate, which is truly mind boggling. Hopefully, Apple remedies that with the entire iPhone 17 lineup, and especially with the iPhone 17 Air. More than one camera, please Number three on my wish list is the iPhone 17 Air's cameras -- and notice I said "cameras" with an "S," because I don't want just one. One of the compromises with thinner phones is that the camera hardware can get scaled back. The Galaxy S25 Edge has two rear cameras, which is less than the rest of the S25 lineup. But Samsung has, impressively, carried over the 200-megapixel main camera that you'll also find on the S25 Ultra, and pairs it with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera. This makes for some pretty great shots -- images are sharp, colors are balanced and portraits really pop. Some rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Air could follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 16E and have just one rear lens. But that would be a huge bummer, since the 16E is technically a "budget" phone -- even if that $600 price tag suggests otherwise. Although the iPhone 16E has a 48-megapixel camera with 2x magnification, I'd still feel cheated if that's all I got with a more premium device like the iPhone 17 Air. If I'm going to spend around $1,000 on a phone, I want the cameras to live up to the price tag. Beat Samsung on battery life Another feature you'll have to compromise with when opting for a slim phone is battery life. Less room means a smaller battery, which means shorter battery life. The S25 Edge has a 3,900 mAh battery, which is the smallest capacity across the S25 series. It's lasted me all day, even with my excessive screen time, but not much more than that. I challenge Apple to break past that limitation and give us a skinny phone that doesn't skimp on battery. It could be a great way to set the iPhone 17 Air apart from competitors -- and in turn can push those competitors to improve their offerings, too. Apple's Adaptive Power feature on iOS 26, which uses AI to subtly scale back energy usage, could be the secret to that longer battery life. Generous storage and RAM I was pleasantly surprised that the Galaxy S25 Edge packs 12GB of RAM, with 256GB and 512GB storage options. Since expandable storage is such a rarity -- and is practically out of the question with a thin phone -- it's great to not worry too much about filling up your phone's memory with photos, videos and games. All of that RAM helps to power the S25 Edge's many AI features it shares with the rest of the S25 lineup. The entire iPhone 16 lineup has 8GB of RAM, which seems to be working just fine, even when powering Apple Intelligence features. So maybe asking for 12GB of RAM on the iPhone 17 Air is unnecessary. But what I really hope is that a skinny iPhone won't scale back on memory, and will also include a 512GB storage option. That way, you can really enjoy having a thin phone, without curtailing your use of it. We'll see what Apple's got up its sleeve, and whether it really will launch a cutting-edge competitor to Samsung's S25 Edge.

Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold Device To Be Unveiled At July 9 Event? Here's What We Know
Last Updated: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch event could give us the new Galaxy Watch 8 series and the brand is tipped have a surprise for the crowd. Samsung's latest foldable series launches on July 9 in New York and at the event we could see its first tri-fold device unveiled. Yes, the company could use the platform to build the hype and intrigue for its new product, something it had done for the Galaxy S25 Edge at the S25 launch event in January and then demoed it at the MWC 2025 in February. The tri-fold device has been publicly confirmed by the brand earlier this year. And now it is a matter of seeing the product in some shape or form, which could happen early next month. The details about this special unveiling comes via a tipster named Digital Chat Station who claims the Galaxy tri-fold device will be unveiled on the sidelines of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 launch event. We should also see the Galaxy Watch 8 series announced as well as the new Galaxy Buds model on the same day. The company has been teasing the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features and design in the last few weeks, promising an Ultra experience, which does not mean a new Ultra variant is on its way this year. As for the new foldable avatar, Huawei is the first company to enter the tri-fold segment with the Mate XT model. We don't know a lot about Samsung's first attempt in this category but rumours suggest that the Galaxy G Fold model would fold inward rather than in a Z shape like Huawei does. A 9.96-inch foldable primary display and a 6.49-inch cover display may be included in the smartphone. First Published: June 30, 2025, 08:15 IST

Edge or Ultra? Samsung's latest premium Galaxy phones are both AU$400 off for EOFY — but today only
If you've been holding out for a good deal before picking up a new Samsung flagship device, you should know that time is running out to take advantage of the EOFY sales. In fact, today is your last chance to score an epic discount before the start of the new financial year. So if you're looking to grab a new phone and still claim it as a tax deduction for the current financial year, now's the time to make a decision. Right now, both the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Galaxy S25 Edge have hit their lowest prices to date, with massive savings of up to AU$452 on the table for EOFY. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best phone of 2025 so far, and you can pick up the 256GB model right now for a cool AU$2,149 AU$1,697 on Amazon. Alternatively, the 512GB model has been reduced by AU$424, now only AU$2,349 AU$1,925. If I didn't already have this phone, I would snatch this deal up in a heartbeat. It tops our list of the best phones in Australia for 2025, and now you can pick up the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra at its lowest price ever thanks to this amazing deal from Amazon. Score the 256GB model in any colour option at a massive AU$452 discount right. Alternatively, you could opt to buy it in one of its exclusive colours direct from Samsung for AU$1,749. Or how about the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which only released at the end of May this year? You can now snag the 256GB model for an impressive AU$1,849 AU$1,449, while the 512GB model has also had its price slashed, now only AU$2,049 AU$1,649. That's a saving of AU$400 for a phone that's only a month old! Talk about an incredibly attractive proposition for early adopters. Samsung's wafer-thin Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone has received an epic AU$400 discount in all storage sizes, just weeks out from release. Right now at Amazon, both the Titanium Black and Titanium Silver models are reduced, though you can get these colours or the Titanium Icyblue variant for the same price if you buy directly from the Samsung online store. If you're after the best smartphone experience, my advice is to look no further than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. It not only boasts the immensely powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, it also sports Samsung's most advanced smartphone camera system to date, featuring a 200MP main sensor, a new 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 10MP telephoto lens. Additionally, it offers the latest Galaxy AI features and a convenient built-in S Pen for seamless note-taking. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S25 Edge shares the same powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and 200MP main camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra, but distinguishes itself with an incredibly sleek new frame, measuring a mere 5.8mm in thickness. However, it does come with a couple of drawbacks: the rest of its camera array isn't as capable as the Ultra's, and it also lacks S Pen support. Regardless of which phone you prefer, there's no denying that these are exceptionally good deals. You'll have to act fast, though, as these deals are unlikely to still be around tomorrow.
