Samsung, LG tighten grip on high-end OLED market with iPhone 17 supply
High yields, vast IP give Korean display makers decisive edge over Chinese rivals South Korea's top display makers Samsung Display and LG Display are cementing their dominance in the high-end OLED market by becoming the only firms to supply Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 lineup with next-generation low-power panels known as low-temperature polycrystalline oxide OLEDs. According to industry sources Friday, Apple is set to adopt LTPO panels across the new iPhone 17 series, a move that further sidelines Chinese competitors like BOE, which continues to struggle with mass production due to low yields and technological hurdles. LTPO OLEDs, known for reducing power consumption by 15 to 20 percent compared to traditional low-temperature polycrystalline silicon or LTPS OLEDs, have become the gold standard for premium smartphones. Originally developed by Apple in 2014, the technology gained traction only in recent years due to complex manufacturing and high costs. It is now widely used in top-tier models like Samsung's Galaxy Ultra and Apple's iPhone Pro. Samsung and LG's exclusive supply to Apple — the world's largest smartphone maker — highlights their technological edge over Chinese rivals in the lucrative high-end display sector. In the first quarter of this year, the two Korean firms controlled a combined 71.8 percent of the LTPO OLED market, according to Omdia. In contrast, Chinese players, including BOE, TCL CSOT and Visionox, collectively held just 27.8 percent. 'BOE is far from catching up,' said an industry official on condition of anonymity. 'The technical and yield barriers for LTPO remain high, and Korean firms have already built a commanding lead.' Samsung and LG are also ahead in intellectual property. As of 2022, LG held 649 LTPO OLED-related patents and Samsung 376 — significantly outpacing BOE (373), TCL (106) and Tianma (99), across jurisdictions including the US, China and Korea. Looking ahead, Apple is expected to adopt LTPO3, the next-generation iteration of the technology, as early as 2027. Korean firms are already ramping up R&D in anticipation, aiming to widen the performance gap with Chinese competitors. Beyond LTPO, both Samsung and LG are spearheading innovation in other next-generation display formats. Samsung recently unveiled an electroluminescent quantum dot display with an industry-high 4,000-nit peak brightness, while LG introduced its fourth-generation OLED technology, setting a new benchmark in brightness performance. Both companies are also accelerating development in emerging fields such as OLED on silicon for XR and VR devices, as well as rollable and flexible displays, the markets where Chinese manufacturers have yet to gain meaningful traction.

Samsung confirms next major Galaxy announcement and foldable is 'worth the wait'
Samsung has teased that its newest Galaxy Z series is "the thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet" Samsung continues to tease the upcoming launch of an exciting new Galaxy Ultra device - with the Korean company now confirming that all details will be revealed in just a matter of weeks. Samsung previously said in an email to customers that "two phones in one" were "coming soon," and raised expectations among tech enthusiasts by adding "the new Galaxy Foldable is coming". On Wednesday, July 9, Samsung Electronics will host an event, 'Unpacked', in New York, where they will unveil "the latest and greatest additions to the Galaxy portfolio". And there's a heavy emphasis on AI's role in the new device. The next-generation Galaxy devices are being reimagined around a new AI-powered interface, supported by breakthrough hardware built to unlock their full potential. "For years, Samsung has designed its devices around what people truly need, such as better performance, sharper cameras and smarter ways to stay connected," a spokesperson shared in a statement. "And, with Galaxy AI, it goes beyond what devices can do - it's about how people interact with them. As AI rapidly becomes the new user interface, it's redefining our relationship with technology. "No longer just a collection of apps and tools, the smartphone is evolving into a smart companion that understands user intent and responds in real time. "This transformation moves us from reaction to anticipation - where, as AI becomes the UI, intent becomes instant." Samsung has teased the event with a cryptic animation showing two ultra-thin panels separating and twisting. The firm has confirmed the Unpacked event will showcase its "thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet" Although there's still no official release date, many are speculating that the Unpacked event will be all about its range of bendy devices. Judging from the teasers, it seems one of the new devices will be given the ultimate Ultra branding, and just like its Z Fold predecessors, will offer a normal screen on the front, which then opens to reveal a huge tablet. What could make this next generation device more appealing is its size. Rumours are rife that Samsung will follow some of its rivals and launch a much thinner foldable in 2025. This would make the folding dual-display "Galaxy Fold Ultra" easier to handle and pop into pockets. Alongside this device, a new Z Flip is expected to be debuted as well. This update could get a much bigger cover display, according to recent leaked images, as per the Express, which will make it easier to answer calls, send texts and reply to emails without opening things up. The new leak also claims the Z Flip 7 will be thinner than the Z Flip 6, which was quite chunky. It is also thought that all of Samsung's new phones will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. Prospective users have already rushed to X, previously Twitter, to share their thoughts on the teaser. "Well we've all been waiting for the ultras to be upgraded in the camera departments for ages," one user noted. "Minor tweaks only. I'm hoping you don't force UK users to exynos again on the s26? If so, you've lost a customer!" Another scribed: "Oooh, can't wait to see what this is all about! Galaxy Unpacked always brings the heat". A third enthused: "I can't wait!!" The event will be streamed live on Samsung Newsroom, and Samsung's YouTube channel beginning at 3pm BST. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
