Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said eatery operators within MBKS areas who plan to offer promotions or packages during the festival period can forward the relevant information to the MBKS for marketing purposes. He said MBKS will help them promote in a bid to prevent some operators from suffering a potential drop in business volume during the festival. 'Kuching Festival Food Fair is one of the most popular local events and MBKS, as the organiser, wants to see all F&B industry players benefit from it. 'We aspire to give a boost to the F&B industry during the festival,' he told his Facebook live 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee noted that some eatery operators may have not successfully applied for a booth, or they do not have enough manpower to run a stall at the forthcoming festival. Nonetheless, he said they can do promotions at their respective outlets to support the festival. 'For as long as you do special offers or promotions during the Kuching Festival Food Fair period, loop us in and we will include your promotions in our promotional flyers so that more people learn about it.' The Mayor said MBKS will notify major restaurants, hotels and eatery operators of this move, enabling them to submit relevant information. 'We look forward to the participation of all, and together we can make this year's Kuching Festival Food Fair even more inclusive and significant,' he added. Meanwhile, Wee invites people from all walks of life to join the 2025 722 Walk, which will begin at 6am from the MBKS Complex. Participants are expected to take a stroll along Jalan Padungan and all the way to the Kuching Waterfront, showing their love for a united Sarawak. According to him, the walk will be about three kilometres, making it suitable for people of all ages. 'We encourage participants to don red, yellow and black shirts, which are the colours of our state flag,' said Wee. Admission is free and the orgniser will not issue t-shirt. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the 722 Walk. 'No registration is needed and we do not do a head-count. All we want is for more people to join in the walk,' he said. The Mayor said a Zumba session will be held on Aug 2 in conjunction with the Kuching Festival Food Fair, and interestd individuals are advised to register via the iPeople App. 2025 Kuching Festival Food Fair lead wee hong seng

Fadillah to brief GPS, GRS MPs on current national issues
Fadillah fields questions from reporters. – Photo by Galileo Petingi KUCHING (July 12): Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof will meet with all MPs from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for briefing on current national issues. Following the recent special meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional MPs, Fadillah said the discussion mostly involved government components from Peninsular Malaysia, such as Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Umno. He said as there were no urgent matters requiring direct engagement, GPS and GRS MPs do not need to attend a similar session with the Prime Minister. 'I will brief all GPS and GRS MPs. We understand the current issues, and I am able to interact directly with them. 'The number of GPS MPs is small and our communication is effective. We've already discussed these matters in the Cabinet, and I know which issues need to be clarified for our colleagues in GPS and GRS. 'However, if invited, we will meet with the Prime Minister. It's unrealistic to expect him to do everything, so I can play a role myself,' he told reporters after visiting the Centre for Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) here this afternoon. Fadillah said this internal approach was more practical, saving time and allowing the government to stay focused on administrative affairs. He also revealed plans for a Unity Government retreat involving all MPs, ministers, and deputy ministers. Separately, Fadillah said he will travel to Sabah next week for a technical meeting related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which will focus on ensuring the state's rights within the Federation are upheld. 'This visit to Sabah is not related to current political issues. It pertains to MA63 technical matters, which are essential to ensuring Sabah's rights continue to be strengthened within the Federation,' he said. Fadillah reiterated GPS's commitment to supporting government stability and prioritising Sarawak's development and the people's welfare. fadillah yusof gps GRS lead meeting national issues

Fadillah: Microsoft AI course may expand statewide if successful
Fadillah observes a community leader using AI tools to conduct an online search – Photo by Galileo Petingi KUCHING (July 12): The pilot programme for the Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) For My Future course, currently involving 108 participants from the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency, could be extended to other areas in Sarawak if it proves successful, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the initiative, held at Centexs Santubong, aims to boost technological skills among grassroots leaders and local communities. 'We're starting with the Petra Jaya area, and if this programme succeeds in terms of training effectiveness and its impact on the community, we'll expand it to other areas throughout Sarawak,' he said after visiting course participants at Centexs Santubong here today. Fadillah said the course is a strategic collaboration between Microsoft and the Petra Jaya Parliamentary Constituency Service Centre, designed to empower community leaders, educators, non-government organisations (NGOs), and rural entrepreneurs through AI. The training includes village chiefs, teachers, and NGO representatives, and focuses on practical applications such as AI-powered correspondence management, data analysis, digital searches, and dashboard creation – tools that support local planning. Participants are also being trained to become trainers in their own communities. While he acknowledged challenges faced by older participants, Fadillah praised their enthusiasm, calling it a promising sign for the programme's sustainability. 'If we can train them well, they can then train others. This will spark a new wave of tech-savvy individuals in rural communities,' he said. Fadillah also underscored the importance of building community databases to identify those in need and deliver more targeted government services. 'With limited financial resources, we must plan wisely. This technology can help us reach those goals,' he said, noting the programme aligns with Sarawak's push toward a digital economy by 2030. Also present during the visit was Centexs CEO Dato Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman. community leaders fadillah yusof Kuching Microsoft AI course

Sagah fields questions from reporters. – Photo by Galileo Petingi SERIAN (July 11): Parents and guardians have been urged to support their children in learning English ahead of the inaugural Dual Language Programme Sarawak Assessment Test (UP-DLP) for Primary 6 pupils this October 15-16. State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the state government will conduct the English-based assessment in partnership with Cambridge University to gauge pupils' understanding of Mathematics and Science taught in English. 'We started teaching Mathematics and Science in English six years ago, and now we've decided to assess our pupils' capabilities. This will be done in collaboration with Cambridge University. 'The results will give us a clearer picture of how well our pupils are doing,' he told reporters after officiating at the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. 'If you have children or grandchildren sitting for the UP-DLP, please encourage them to work hard and improve their English proficiency,' he added. On a related matter, Sagah said discussions have yet to begin on the state's planned free tertiary education programme for working Sarawakians. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had, during the state-level Labour Day celebration on May 18, announced that the state government will fund full-time higher education for Sarawakian adults wishing to resume their studies. Eligible courses will be offered at state-owned institutions including Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak. Sagah said his ministry is currently focusing on implementing the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) for school leavers, which will only apply to those enrolled in full-time programmes.
