Not Rekha, this actress was the first choice for 'Umrao Jaan', director planned for..., she is...
'Umrao Jaan' is a cult classic film of cinema. It has been 44 years since this film hit the screens. This film, directed by Muzaffar Ali, remains a favourite of the audience even today with its story, soulful music, and Rekha's brilliant acting. You can watch 'Umrao Jaan' once again in theaters. The film's director, Muzaffar Ali, revealed in a conversation with India Today that Rekha finally immortalized Umrao, but she was not his first choice. Who was the first choice for 'Umrao Jaan'? He said, 'Initially, I thought of Smita Patil. She had worked with me in 'Gaman' and she would have done a good job.' The director recalled, 'But then we felt maybe we need someone who is a little more feminine.' Eventually, Rekha was finalised. Ali shared, 'When I read the character and lived it, listened to the film recorded in Salma Siddiqui's voice again and again, it was Rekha. Her eyes had the power to tell the story where you fall and rise in the same moment. What Rekha did, I don't think anyone else could have done it.' How Rekha's presence uplifts Umrao Jaan He further added that the casting was important… and I think Rekha's presence helped. But I believe more than her, people showed a lot of empathy with the character. That helped. 'Umrao Jaan' also stars Naseeruddin Shah and the late Farooq Sheikh.

Why learning the Japanese philosophy Gaman is important to endure ups and downs in life
In life, adversity is inevitable. Whether it's personal struggles, professional setbacks, or unforeseen hardships, resilience plays a crucial role in how we navigate these challenges. In Japanese culture, Gaman (我慢) is a deeply rooted philosophy that emphasises patience, perseverance, and inner strength in facing difficulties. More than just endurance, Gaman is about maintaining dignity, self-discipline, and grace under pressure. Gaman translates to 'perseverance' or 'enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity.' It is derived from Buddhist teachings and is a fundamental aspect of Japanese culture. The idea encourages individuals to suppress negative emotions, stay composed in adversity, and maintain a strong sense of duty. This principle has shaped Japan's collective mindset, particularly in times of crisis, from natural disasters to economic recessions. Historically, Gaman was evident in the aftermath of World War II when the Japanese people displayed remarkable resilience in rebuilding their country. More recently, during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the world witnessed the Japanese people's collective patience, restraint, and calm response—hallmarks of Gaman in action. Promotes Mental ResilienceLife is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Gaman teaches individuals to endure difficulties without being overwhelmed by emotions. By fostering patience and self-discipline, people develop a stronger mindset to tackle challenges effectively. Encourages Emotional StrengthIn many cultures, openly expressing frustration or anger is common when faced with difficulties. However, Gaman suggests that self-control and emotional restraint can prevent negativity from escalating, helping individuals remain composed and solution-focused. Strengthens Social HarmonyJapanese society places great importance on maintaining group harmony (wa). Gaman teaches individuals to prioritise collective well-being over personal grievances. This approach fosters stronger relationships, both personally and professionally, by reducing unnecessary conflicts. Inspires Perseverance in GoalsWhether pursuing career ambitions, fitness goals, or personal growth, success requires long-term commitment and effort. Gaman encourages people to persist even when progress seems slow, instilling a sense of discipline that leads to long-term achievements. Aids in Overcoming CrisisThe ability to endure hardships with patience is vital during major life crises. By practising Gaman, individuals can face difficulties with a calm mind and make rational decisions rather than reacting impulsively to problems.

'When Reena and I separated, that evening I finished an entire bottle of alcohol, and for the next 1.5 years I drank every day. I never slept. Main behosh ho jata tha daaru peeke (I would lose consciousness due to heavy drinking). I was trying to kill myself,' Aamir admitted, his voice laden with emotion as he recounted the depth of his despair. The actor further confessed that he had completely withdrawn from professional and social life during that period. 'I was not even working then. Neither did I care to meet anybody. The same year, 'Lagaan' released and a newspaper article called me 'Man of the Year, Aamir Khan'. I found it very ironical,' he said, highlighting the contrast between his public success and private turmoil. Aamir and Reena's love story began in their teenage years when they were neighbours. Aamir, then a struggling actor, was smitten and famously wrote a love letter in his own blood to win her affection. Despite initial hesitation, Reena eventually agreed, and the couple married secretly. She also appeared briefly in Aamir's debut film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. The couple, who share two children—Junaid and Ira—parted ways a year after collaborating on the Oscar-nominated 'Lagaan'. Aamir then went on to marry Kiran Rao with whom he has a son - Azaad. However, they got divorced in 2021, after being together for 16 years. The 'Sitaare Zameen Par' actor is now dating Gauri Spratt.
