Gautam Gambhir's 'fixation' will 'never work', head coach badgered by former India and Australia cricketers

India's XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham has T20 cricket written all over it. Two all-rounders replacing a specialist batter and a pacer who can who can bat a bit, left India with only five designated batters and three specialist bowlers. Having batters till No.8 and six bowling options has been India head coach Gautam Gambhir's template. It has worked for him in white-ball cricket, especially in T20s. Be it the IPL or international cricket, Gambhir's fondness for all-rounders has brought results. But the same style has hurt him in Test cricket. It did against New Zealand at home. Then in Australia, and if India don't get the desired result in Edgbaston, England will be added to that list. Indian captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir during a practice session(PTI) After choosing a predictable XI for the series opener in Birmingham, which they lost by five wickets despite dominating the match for a better period, India pressed the panic button. They rang in three changes. One of them was, of course, due to Jasprit Bumrah's workload management. The other two can be credited to Gambhir's 'fixation' for all-rounders. Calling India's selection "baffling," former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody said packing the team with all-rounders has never worked in Test cricket. India vs England Live Score, 2nd Test "India's selection for this test is baffling. No Bumrah is one thing, but to only have 5 specialist batsmen is a gamble. The fixation on all-rounders who are there to offer depth with bat and ball has never worked. Specialists are always going to offer more over a test," Moody wrote on X. India replaced Jasprit Bumrah with pacer Akash Deep and brought in seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in place of Shardul Thakur, and the third change was another surprising one. They dropped Sai Suidharsan, who batted at No.3 on is Test debut in Headingley, made way for Washington Sundar. Sudharsan was caught down the leg side for a duck in the first innings but played a decent knock in the second. Former India batter Subramanium Badrinath said it was a harsh call to drop a youngster after just one Test. "Sai scored a crucial 30 and was involved in an important partnership in the second innings. Dropping a youngster high on confidence doesn't feel right," Badrinath wrote on X. The selection of Sundar was a strange one in more than one way. After the assistance that Ravindra Jadeja got on Day 5 of the first Test from the rough created on the left-hander's off stump on a placid Headingley pitch, the chorus to include Kuldeep Yadav as the lead spinner grew, especially considering the conditions at Birmingham, the venue for the second Test. Ever since the advent of Bazball cricket, Edgbaston has produced some of the flattest tracks that naturally tend to offer something to the spinner towards the end of the five-day affair. India, however, did not pick Kuldeep and went with Washington Sundar as their second spin-bowling option. Captain Shubman Gill said it was due to batting depth.

Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir Bring Back Old Custom That Rohit Sharma Didn't Follow In Australia

Ahead of the second Test against England in Edgbaston, India captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir brought back an old tradition that was missing during the team's tour of Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Sources informed NDTV that captain Shubman Gill hosted a team dinner with the entire squad on Sunday, ahead of the second Test against England. The intent behind the activity was to strengthen team bonding, considering the number of newcomers the team has. The decision comes as a welcome move, as no such activity was held in Australia under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. As India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the lack of 'team spirit' in the group was categorically called out, with head coach Gambhir reportedly not being happy seeing the team being divided into different groups. With Gill as the new coach, Gambhir seems to have ensured that the trend breaks and an old custom returns. As for the match, Jasprit Bumrah 's likely non-selection has emerged as the biggest talking point ahead of the match, with the management looking to rest the marquee pacer. 'Jasprit Bumrah is available. We are trying to find the right combination that can pick 20 wickets and score runs as well. Will take the final call after looking at the wicket for the final time today,' said skipper Gill in the pre-game conference. "It is difficult, but at the end of the day, our team comprises the best players in India. It is difficult but not impossible. The other players are playing for the country based on their performances. Luckily, we have a massive pool full of talent, which is why we are able to compete away from home,' he added. After losing the first Test in Leeds, however, the Indian team cannot afford another slip-up, as that would send them 0-2 behind in the series.

Why is head coach Gautam Gambhir failing in Tests? This former England player's remark won't go well with Team India

India's Test performance has been disappointing since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has blamed the team's weak bowling attack for Gambhir's struggles. After losing the first Test, India now gear up for the second match in Birmingham. The Indian Test team did not perform well since Gautam Gambhir became the head coach. During the first test against England, India lost by five wickets in spite of five members of the batting department scoring centuries, thus becoming the first team to lose a match in Test history with five centuries. As per former England spinner Monty Panesar, Gambhir can put up a good batting line up but he now has to work on a good bowling attack. Unless a consistent unit in the bowling department is provided, Panesar cautioned, Gambhir will attract more critics. As Panesar pointed out, India had scored more than 400 runs and ended up losing the first Test that was supposed to be very different. He stressed that the greatest problem that Gambhir faces in England is to select a squad that can clinch 20 wickets because this is the only way to win Test matches in a foreign country. Panesar said that unless the Indian bowling blows improve, BCCI will probably review the Gambhir performance on Test grave decisions regarding future employment of the head coach at the end of the England series. Panesar feels that the pitch in Edgbaston is not flat, and the Indians should make use of it. His recommendation was on either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar to be included in the team and Prasidh Krishna can be rested because he is not effective in bowling short balls. Although He has done well in T20Is, and has taken India to the Champions Trophy 2025 win, his Test performance has been mediocre. India were beaten 3-0 at home by New Zealand, 1-3 in Australia and are now behind in the England series. Should India fail in this series too, then BCCI might have to think again about its Test head coach, Gambhir.
