(AP Photo/Gustavo Garello) ROSARIO, Argentina (AP) — A teary-eyed Angel Di María was introduced as the latest signing by Rosario Central on Monday, 18 years after he left his boyhood club. Di María, who helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, always wanted to return to Rosario, but he received death threats from drug dealer gangs. Advertisement Located 300 kilometers north of Buenos Aires, Rosario is a hub of violent crime and clashes between groups seeking to monopolize the drug trade. 'Coming home after so long is something very special. It was what I wanted. To play for Central again,' the 37-year-old Di María said. 'Being a champion with Central is the only thing I'm missing. 'I couldn't believe it when I was training today. It felt like it was the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed my first training session.' Di Maria joined Rosario Central when he was aged four, and made his professional debut with the club at 17 in 2005. After winning the 2007 Under-17 World Cup, he was sold to Benfica. Advertisement He went on to play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica for a second time, and collected nearly 30 trophies. He scored against France in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar and won the last two Copa Americas. Di María is coming off a Club World Cup appearance with Benfica. He scored three goals for the Portuguese side which was eliminated by Chelsea in the round of 16. 'Right now, I'm not thinking about retirement," he said. 'I'm thinking about playing, about enjoying myself. About continuing at whatever level I've been doing.' ___ AP soccer:

Gangs in Haiti burn beloved Gothic gingerbread hotel that rose to international fame

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haiti's once illustrious Grand Hôtel Oloffson, a beloved Gothic gingerbread home that inspired books, hosted parties until dawn and attracted visitors from Mick Jagger to Haitian presidents, was burned down by gangs this past weekend . Hundreds of Haitians and foreigners mourned the news as it spread across social media, with the hotel manager on Monday confirming the fire in a brief comment on X. Even though gang violence had forced the hotel in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, to close in recent years, many had hoped it would reopen.

'Where Is the Guest?' — Murderbaad trailer, a film by 25-year-old Arnab Chatterjee teases a twisted romantic thriller set in Jaipur

The official trailer of Murderbaad, a new-age Hindi romantic thriller, is here and it's already sending chills. Helmed by 25-year-old Arnab Chatterjee (who was just 24 during filming), this debut feature is backed by Reliance Entertainment and boasts an intriguing mix of romance, mystery, and psychological drama. Set against the serene backdrop of a Rajasthani palace in Jaipur, Murderbaad kicks off with the sudden disappearance of a guest, unraveling into a maze of dark secrets and repressed desires. Leading the cast are acclaimed actors Sharib Hashmi, Amole Gupte, and Manish Chaudhari, along with Gully Boy's Nakul Roshan Sahdev and Kanikka Kapur of Dono fame. Each character seems to be hiding something, and no one is safe in this layered, pulse-pounding whodunit. Speaking about it, Arnab Chatterjee said, 'the Murderbaad journey started 5 years ago, when I wrote the two-pager while still in college. It's inspired by the romance and thrill I grew up watching, but I wanted to set that mood in a distinctly rooted setting. At its core, it's about the stories people bury to protect their identity. I'm grateful to have had such a talented cast and crew bring this vision to life.' The film boasts a powerful ensemble, featuring new talents Nakul Roshan Sahdev and Kanikka Kapur, along with veterans Sharib Hashmi, Manish Chaudhari, Amole Gupte, Aanjjan Srivastav, Vibha Chhibber among others. Cinematography by the legendary Binod Pradhan (Devdas, Rang De Basanti, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Kalank), editing by Dev Rao Jadhav (Badhai Ho, Maidaan, Kaala Paani), and action by Sham Kaushal (Gangs of Wasseypur, Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastani), add to the film's high production value. Sharib Hashmi added, 'Despite being his debut Hindi feature film, Arnab left no stone unturned in bringing together a complete mix of fresh and extremely experienced members in the team. I've enjoyed every day on set. The film is very unique in its own way, both in terms of story as well as the way it got made, with a 24-year-old (at the time of shooting) director-producer being at the top of it. I pray for all the luck to our film, and wish Arnab all the success that he deserves in the future'. Amole Gupte, who plays a crucial character, shared, 'This young man, Arnab, all of 25, has managed to bring in industry veterans and mounted a whole film on his own shoulders. He has a unique way of approaching, and I was thrilled with his conviction, to which you can't say no. When you how to collaborate, you know how to approach life. I'm floored by the way he has done all of it!'.

A lesson straight outta Ballaghaderreen

You may have seen the 2002 film Gangs of New York, a tale of naked cruelty, ferocious violence, unforgiveable treachery. Timid, by comparison with the Gangs of Ballaghaderreen. Growing up in the town, each street had its own gang whose sole purpose was to have the best bonfire on June 23rd every year. From January to June we collected tyres, in particular, (this was deep in the last millennium/century, before global warming and EU regulations) but everything combustible towards that glorious end. These were secreted away in places none of the other gangs could possibly find but usually did. READ MORE We were the superior and totally honourable Barrack Street Gang or, as my mother used call us, 'the Bash Street Kids' (we used to get the Beano comic in our house). Against us were ranged two other major gangs; the combined thugs of the New Street Gang (including Main St) and the low gangsters of Pound Street (including Abbey View). Raids on each other's stores of tyres were frequent, usually facilitated by informers on all sides, and leading to ferocious pitched battles generally involving ash plants/sticks. Bin lids were excellent shields. Once we spotted a Pound Street gang member up a tree spying on us. We dragged him to a nearby garden, tied him to a stake and rubbed nettles on his legs to try to find out where they kept their tyres. He wouldn't say. Then we put brambles around him and said we'd light them. He still wouldn't say. Typically noble, we let him go. Our greatest ignominy was when the Pound Streets took over our bonfire one year. The humiliation! We had been betrayed by one of our own. He sat beside a Pound Street member at school. We regathered forces and in an almighty assault set about recapturing our own fire. Adults happening on the scene were so appalled by the violence they threatened to call the guards. It made no difference. Then they said they'd call 'the Brothers'. Enough. Members of all gangs knew that when it came to violence none of us could match 'the Brothers'. We all downed weapons and went home, black and bruised in our case with a firm purpose of amendment to have foul revenge on those Pound Street low-lifes. Gang , from Old English gang, for group of men. inaword@
