'Not Smart' - Shedeur Sanders Officially Called Out By Browns

The Cleveland Browns selected Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of this year's NFL Draft, giving the former Colorado quarterback an opportunity after his slide through the first several rounds. Sanders is set to compete with three other quarterbacks for the starting job in training camp and the preseason, but he raised eyebrows during the offseason for the wrong reasons. The rookie quarterback was cited for two separate speeding tickets this offseason, issues that caused some to question his maturity - and perhaps to justify why he was selected in the fifth round of the draft. The Browns are standing by Sanders despite the controversy, but general manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the issue on Thursday at the team's practice facility. "Not smart. Just not smart," Berry said while speaking to reporters. "It's something that we've addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications, he understands the consequences. It's not just about yourself. It's not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people...a deer or something cuts out in front of you, your reaction time. It's just dangerous." Sanders was officially cited twice for speeding in June. The first incident took place on June 5, when he was pulled over by the Ohio State Patrol, who said the quarterback was driving at 91 MPH in a 65 mph zone. The second citation came in the middle of the month, and police records indicate that Sanders was driving at 101 MPH in a 60 mph zone. Following his speeding violations, Sanders has been active in the Cleveland community. He organized a community event after a devastating fire that displaced more than 40 residents from an apartment complex in the city. The "Garden Valley Fun Fest" included free food, games haircuts and more for local residents. "I just wanted a day for everybody to get out here and have some type of enjoyment, excitement, bring just the family atmosphere back," Sanders said, speaking to News 5 Cleveland. The rookie attended the event with his teammate Mike Hall Jr., a former standout for the Ohio State Buckeyes. We'll see how Sanders' rookie season goes as he embarks on his NFL journey. Browns QB Shedeur Sanders continues to give back to Cleveland community

In the less-than-three months since rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders arrived in Cleveland, he has already made himself a prominent figure in the local community. After a tragic explosion and fire at the Rainbow Terrance Apartments in Cleveland's Garden Valley last month that displaced 40 families, Sanders stepped up to help bring a sense of normalcy back to the community. As first reported by WEWS' Camryn Justice, Sanders hosted the Garden Valley Fun Fest on Wednesday, providing free refreshments and entertainment. Here is what Sanders shared about why he decided to get involved: Since being selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders has made a habit of giving back to the Cleveland area; this week's event comes after Sanders made an appearance at a local youth football camp last month and spoke to students at a Cleveland-area high school in April. While Sanders' character was under the microscope before and after April's draft, his penchant for supporting and engaging with the city of Cleveland has painted him in an endearing light, and is a positive reflection on the Browns' signal-caller.

Colorado Buffaloes football's Shedeur Sanders lauded for something no Browns QB has done before

Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders is already making waves in his new city. Sanders has become highly involved in the Cleveland community before taking his first NFL snap. From his work at the Garden Valley Fun Fest to his viral appearance at a KFC drive-thru, Sanders has heavily interacted with Cleveland and its residents. The Colorado Buffaloes football legend is winning many fans over after his controversial start to the summer and unprecedented NFL Draft slide. On Cleveland radio's 92.3 The Fan, former NFL receiver and Ohio native Cecil Shorts joined the show to talk about Sanders' early community impact. 'I'll be honest with you, I've never seen what Shedeur Sanders is doing this early on in a player's career,' Shorts said. 'I've never seen that before, I've never seen a rookie come into the league and before he even played a snap is already in the Garden Valley Projects … All the things he's doing (in the community). It's a special thing he's doing, that's not normal.' Shorts praised Sanders for his activism and enthusiasm as a rookie, noting the fifth-round talent's actions as more genuine than the typical actions of more experienced and accomplished athletes. 'What he's doing is he's winning the fans over, he's winning the city of Cleveland over,' Shorts said. 'To me, it's genuine. A lot of the times, guys will go after they have a Pro-Bowl season or after they make some plays in a game. You'll see them out there with their jersey on with all these Browns people around them … This is him and his crew doing it because he wants to do it. This brings hope to everybody watching.' If Sanders can grind his way to a starting role for Cleveland, he could emerge as the ultimate Browns fan favorite.

Shedeur Sanders helps organize community event after East Cleveland fire

Shedeur Sanders is doing his part to ingratiate himself with his new neighbors. Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' fifth-round rookie quarterback, helped organize and hosted a community event in East Cleveland on Wednesday, according to ESPN. One of the main goals of the event was to bring together the community after an explosion and fire at an apartment complex in late June killed one man and destroyed more than 40 units. The Garden Valley Fun Fest included free food from food trucks, free haircuts, games and other activities. Sanders, along with Browns defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., reportedly took pictures and chatted with fans for hours before putting together "an impromptu game of football with kids." The Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft in late April. He said on his introductory press conference call shortly after the Browns drafted him that "I'll be more involved in the community." He's making good on that promise before he has even played a snap. Sanders is expected to battle for the Browns' starting quarterback job throughout training camp and the preseason. He's one of five quarterbacks Cleveland has on its roster, along with veterans Joe Flacco, Deshaun Watson and Kenny Pickett, plus fellow rookie and 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. The Browns' rookies are due to report to training camp Friday, with veterans to follow suit on Tuesday, July 22.

Shedeur Sanders hosts event for Cleveland community after fire tragedy

Despite an up-and-down offseason that included a draft slide, a quarterback competition, speeding tickets and an ESPYS roast, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has not lost sight of one of the goals he set when he got drafted. That promise was to help out the local Cleveland community, and Sanders has fulfilled it more than once. After dozens of families were displaced from their Cleveland-area apartments following an explosion, Sanders helped host the Garden Valley Fun Fest. The event brought free food trucks, haircuts, and activities to a community that desperately needed a distraction. Sanders heard the tragic news on social media and knew he wanted to help. "When everything transpires, i was out of town, so I was like, 'Nah, the first thing I do when I get back is definitely come to the commnity," Sanders told ABC News 5 Cleveland. "This is just off an Instagram DM...I was like 'Dang that's crazy,' and I just wanted a day for eveybody to get out here and have some type of enjoyment, excitement, bring the family atmosphere back." Sanders could have donated to a fund like many athletes of his stature would do, but instead, it was important to him to show up for the community and go above and beyond to show his support. The former Colorado quarterback continues to show his character since becoming a Brown. In the spring, just a few weeks after he was drafted, Sanders visited Cleveland High School and spoke to students about being a professional athlete. He also hosted a workout for high school football players that made the day for several kids. For Colorado fans who have seen Sanders in and around the Boulder community over the past two years, this should come as no surprise; however, Cleveland fans are now experiencing firsthand the level of community engagement Sanders is involved in.
